Final Reflection Essay

In my time in English 1301, I learned that the writing process isn't as simple and clear-cut

as it seems. When composing a first draft, there are many ups and downs, and the revision

process isn't just copying and pasting new sentences. Many of the assignments helped me

understand the importance of conducting research, such as in essay two, where we narrowed

down the poster options depending on their visuals. It helped me understand how much work and

effort should be put into writing a clear and coherent essay.

Analyzing pieces of media helped me break down the details and their importance. For

example, our first essay was to break down the written texts and analyze how and why they were

used to convey a specific message. That was simple because the evidence is straightforward. In

essay two, the visual analysis is more challenging to break down because there isn’t any blatantly

obvious evidence to the audience. I understood the importance of breaking down the article to

process the information before relaying it to the audience.

Revising was my favorite part of the writing process. I got to see where my mistake lay

and what I could do to change the flow of my writing to improve my essay. I improved many

things throughout my essays, such as removing nonsense sentences and rewriting entire

paragraphs. While it took more effort, I enjoyed being able to correct myself. Coming up with

new and better ideas, especially after consulting my peers and professor, also helped me gain a

better perspective for my essays.

The most challenging was coming up with newer ways to put out my ideas without

repeating myself. I often struggled to write a paragraph for my essay for fear of repetition, and I

would often find myself staring at blank pages. The easiest part was always the first draft. I could

pour sentences on the pages and worry about editing later. It was easier to write than to edit, but I

enjoyed both processes and treated them with equal significance.

To help my audience understand the concepts in my essay, I kept an unbiased opinion.

This was simple, except for my second essay, which I wrote about visual analysis based on one

of my interests. However, I got multiple opinions through the peer reviews and implemented

them in my writing process. Getting a second opinion helped me see my essay through the eyes

of an “audience member” and helped me narrow down what I should keep and what I should

remove to make my essay flow better.

Staying motivated to write was difficult to maintain. I often wished for my essay to be

done or someone else to write it for me. The workload of multiple classes and personal things

happening simultaneously was tough to balance, and the stress would get to me. However, I

knew I had to push through it and at least get something out. The stress affected how I wrote, and

the tone of my writing didn’t sound like me, but after getting back my motivation and leaving

stress behind, my tone and flow of writing improved.

The least challenging was writing out the first drafts. As previously mentioned, I could

write without any stress whatsoever, and whatever I didn’t need, I could edit something out at a

later time. Writing out my first draft helped me gain confidence in the rest of my writing process,

and I felt I could better understand what I was trying to convey to my audience once I began to

filter out the nonsensical parts of my writing.

This course helped me better prepare to analyze rhetorical strategies and apply them to

my writing. It also helped me understand how I work as a writer, figuring out the tone and flow

of my essays. I hadn’t written essays since high school; even then, they weren't as professional or

well-informed as my essays now. My writing has improved thanks to the strategies I learned and

I gained a better understanding of what it meant to be an author.
