PROLOGUE

One of the most used terms after the pandemic is

the term “new normal.” The new normal in education
is the increased use of online learning tools. The
COVID-19 pandemic has triggered new ways of
learning. All around the world, educational
institutions are looking toward online learning
platforms to continue with the process of educating
students. The new normal now is a transformed
concept of education with online learning at the core
of this transformation. Today, digital learning has
emerged as a necessary resource for students and
schools all over the world. For many educational
institutes, this is an entirely new way of education
that they have had to adopt. Online learning is now
applicable not just to learn academics but it also
extends to learning extracurricular activities for
students as well. In recent months, the demand for
online learning has risen significantly, and it will
continue doing so in the future.

Online education is increasingly large

part of higher education, as both online
schools and traditional schools continue
to expand their online offerings. Online
learning communities have made access
to higher education easier for students
that work full time, have disabilities or
otherwise cannot make it to traditional
classes. However, Several months into
this unprecedented, large scale adoption
of online learning, it is important to
assess the advantages and disadvantages
of online learning.

2
FINDING
Positive impact of online learning

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULE AND THE

FREEDOM TO PURSUE
STUDENTS’ PASSIONS
Students learn at their preferred pace
through pre-recorded videos.
Some may choose to clear all the classes
they have to complete at the start of the
week and spend the latter half working
part-time jobs or honing their passion.
Others may decide to pace themselves by
sectioning off a few hours each day for
learning.

INCREASES ACCESSIBILITY TO
EDUCATION
If these cost savings are transferred to students,
the barriers to education will be significantly
lowered for students from low-income households.
Yet, many students are still keen on paying it
forward by volunteering as peer tutors to
underprivileged children.
With online teaching tools such as HeyHi’s online
whiteboard, student volunteers can offer free
tuition to their peers despite their busy schedules.

TRAINS STUDENTS TO BE
SELF-DISCIPLINED
When students turn to online learning, there
is no friendly school administrator who does
the scheduling.
Instead, students have to take charge of
their timetables.
Through this scheduling process, students
are challenged to cultivate self-discipline
and time management skills, character
traits that will serve them well even after
graduation.

3
COST-EFFECTIVE AND
SAVES TIME
E-Learning offers incredible
educational
improvements through on-line
learning services, greater
information access, greater
communication and cost
efficiency.
Overall traditional learning is
expensive as it takes
a long time and the results may
vary.
E-learning has now become a
substitute that is faster,
cheaper and potentially better

NO BOUNDARIES
Online Learning offer the student
the flexible time of place and time
of delivering or receiving learning
information.
Various tools and technologies are
employed which help the students
to access the upgraded information
from any corner of the world.
In a blended course there was
face-to face classroom discussion
which is now replaced by on-line
content.

4
FINDING
Negative impact of online learning

LACK OF ROUTINE
When students are not disciplined enough to
develop a routine, they are free to give
themselves a break whenever they want to.
However, once they go easy on themselves, they
may never return to their initial level of
enthusiasm.
Without a routine that students adhere to daily,
there may be pockets of time that could have
been utilised for personal development but are
wasted scrolling Instagram or watching Tik Tok
videos.

LACK OF MOTIVATION DUE TO

THE ABSENCE OF POSITIVE
PEER PRESSURE
Surrounded by the success stories of their
peers, students are motivated and driven to
be the best version of themselves.
Online learning removes students from such
an environment and places them in a bubble.
Without positive peer pressure, students may
be less keen on pushing their boundaries to
achieve what they otherwise would have
attained in school.

TECHNOLOGICAL ISSUES
Since online classes are done completely through
the computer, technological issues can occur that
make it difficult to complete courses on time.
Students must have modern computers to run online
classroom systems and schools often require
Microsoft Word and other expensive programs.
In addition, when there are technological problems,
it can be hard to access the classroom or get live
help, which can be a major disadvantage when
deadlines arrive.

5
LIMITATION OF ONLINE
PROGRAMS THAT RELY ON
INTERNET ACCESS.
Some student pay a fixed monthly
rate for their Internet
connection, while others are
charged for the time they spend
online.
The participants’ time online is
limited by the amount of Internet
access they can afford
Then instruction and participation
in the online program will not be
equitable for all students in the
course.

LACK OF ESSENTIAL
ONLINE QUALITIES
If facilitators are not properly
trained in online delivery and
methodologies, the success of the
online program will be
compromised. An instructor must
be able to communicate well in
writing and in the language in
which the course is offered.
An online program will be
weakened if its facilitators are
not adequately prepared to
function in the Virtual Classroom.
Failure to do this can alienate
the class both from each other
and from the instructor.

SOLUTION
finding the most effective solution

GETTING TO KNOW STUDENTS WHILE

TEACHING ONLINE CLASSES

- Things like pronouncing a student’s

name correctly and learning about
their interests promote a sense of
belonging with distance learning.
- Teachers are thinking outside the
box and using virtual icebreaker
activities at the beginning of every
class to help students feel
comfortable engaging in online class FINDING THE MOST EFFECTIVE

discussions. TECHNOLOGY FOR DISTANCE LEARNING

-Some are creating custom avatars

(opens in a new tab), like Bitmoji, for
the entire class, adding a fun visual - Innovative educators leverage
element and allowing students to technology like virtual whiteboards,
showcase their personality. discussion forums, interactive
notebooks, surveys, and videos to
teach their curriculum and
communicate with students.
- Technology should always be
appropriate to the grade level, and it’s
important to give students time to
learn new tools.
- Younger students only spend 15‒30
percent (opens in a new tab) of their
time on the computer, whereas high
school students spend more time on it.

7
MAKE ONLINE CLASSES

MORE DYNAMIC

- Students find it difficult to hold their attention when a live

lecture extends to two to three hours. While students find it
difficult to stay attentive, educators too find it exhausting to sit
in front of the screen and keep a class engaged for hours.
- Have the right mix of recorded and live lectures.
- Teachers could do pre-recorded lectures for a particular
session.
- Conduct live online lectures just to solve the doubts of the
students and to expound on the topics taught in the session

INCLUDE MORE ACTIVITIES TO ENGAGE

INTERACTION AND ENGAGEMENT

- teachers could ensure that they include more activities

during their live lectures
- In the form of conducting polls, conducting quizzes, and
organizing group activities in breakout rooms.
- These could make sure that a student not only stays
focused, but also has an immersive learning experience.
- Teachers could simply ask questions and ask the students
to type in their answers during the live sessions.

MAKE ONLINE ASSESSMENTS MORE DYNAMIC AND

CHALLENGING

- Conducting online examination might be one of the trickiest

things for institutions.
- So instead, schools and universities could have multiple ways
of conducting assessments
- Including online assignments and live online quizzes.
- There are several platforms where institutions could check for
plagiarism when it comes to assignments and for live online
quizzes, institutions could randomize the question series for
students and make the time duration for quizzes shorter. This
way, the integrity of assessments could be maintained.

WHAT IS MORE EFFECTIVE WHEN

STUDY ONLINE CLASSES?

For my perspective, what can I recommend for this topic online classes is make online
classes more dynamic. It is because when it comes to e-learning, students find it difficult to
hold their attention when a live lecture extends to two to three hours. While students find
it difficult to stay attentive, educators too find it exhausting to sit in front of the screen
and keep a class engaged for hours. One way to overcome this for schools is to ensure that
they have the right mix of recorded and live lectures. However, when students are given a
choice in their learning, they may see the assignment differently, and perhaps understand
the concept better. Choices allow students to learn more because they provide an
opportunity for the student to pick an area of interest at their knowledge level. Not to
mention that students will likely show more success because they had some stake in
choosing the assignment. For example, students will likely choose something about which
they are passionate and knowledgeable, or about which they want to learn; when this
occurs, they have an automatic motivation for completing the assignment, and they take
ownership and accountability in their work. Thus, student can be more focus in classes
even for an hours. That is mean that students can give more attention what lecturer says
without be able to sleep or lack of attention. As Dr. Wayne Dyer said, “When you change the
way you look at things, the things you look at change.” I love this quote because it rings
true in so many settings, but it is specifically true in education. The conclusion is online
classes can be more effective if we can change the different method in teaching students.

9
CONCLUSION

Education sector presently going through a crisis. The lockdown

has restricted classroom teaching and students are completely
relying on online content and remote learning features to study
these days. Today is a very exciting time for technology and
education. Online programs offer technology-based
instructional environments that expand learning opportunities
and can provide top quality education through a variety of
formats and modalities. With the special needs of adult learners
who need or want to continue their education, online programs
offer a convenient solution to conflicts with work, family and
study schedules. Institutions of higher education have found
that online programs are essential in providing access to
education for the populations they wish to serve. In order to
make online program to be successful, the curriculum, the
facilitator, the technology and the students must be carefully
considered and balanced in order to take full advantage of the
strengths of this format and at the same time, avoid pitfalls that
could result from its weaknesses.
