Reflection Paper Topic & Instructions
Due Date: October 6 (Week 5)
Question:
A state is an independent, self-governing political community whose governing
institutions have the capability to make rules that are binding on the population residing within
a particular territory. Consequently, states claim to have “the monopoly of the legitimate use of
physical force within a given territory” (Weber, 1970, p. 78). The modern nation-state, has no
doubt, been affected by globalization.
Globalization is defined in general terms as the fading or complete disappearance of
economic, social, and cultural borders between nation-states. Some scholars have theorized
that states will increasingly become less relevant in a globalized world. In other words, the
sovereignty of states (which gives them a claim as the highest authority within the territory,
while not being subject to any a higher external authority), in would be compromised or
negatively affected.
Using concrete examples from the real world, write a reflection essay on the nature and
significance of globalization on the sovereignty of the modern nation-state. What do you think
the future of Nation-states in a continuously globalized world would look like?
