Reflection Paper Topic & Instructions
Due Date: October 6 (Week 5)

Question:
A state is an independent, self-governing political community whose governing
institutions have the capability to make rules that are binding on the population residing within
a particular territory. Consequently, states claim to have “the monopoly of the legitimate use of
physical force within a given territory” (Weber, 1970, p. 78). The modern nation-state, has no
doubt, been affected by globalization.
Globalization is defined in general terms as the fading or complete disappearance of
economic, social, and cultural borders between nation-states. Some scholars have theorized
that states will increasingly become less relevant in a globalized world. In other words, the
sovereignty of states (which gives them a claim as the highest authority within the territory,
while not being subject to any a higher external authority), in would be compromised or
negatively affected.
Using concrete examples from the real world, write a reflection essay on the nature and
significance of globalization on the sovereignty of the modern nation-state. What do you think
the future of Nation-states in a continuously globalized world would look like?

Important note on reflection essays:

Reflective writing has four basic stages. First, you are asked to explain course materials. Next,
you are challenged to reflect explicitly on how this material calls into question your
preconceptions about the topic. Third, you analyze the conflicts, confusions, or questions that
arise from engaging your preconceptions. And finally, you formulate plans to use the
knowledge gained by the reflective process. In short, reflective writing invites you to search
for the truth rather than develop rhetorical skills.

Important Instructions:
Students will write and submit a 1500-word paper for this topic. Each paper must be typed,
double-spaced, printed single-sided, and use Times New Roman font size 12 and the APA Style
for referencing and citations.

Submission:
Submit your reflection papers to my email- [email protected]
