METHODOLOGY OF THE STUDY
This chapter describes the research method and procedures, techniques and source of
data that helped the researcher for further data gatherings. It includes the research
design, sampling method, ethical consideration, role of the researchers, data collection
method, and data analysis.
This study will employ the simple random sampling, which would be applied
on the Grade 11 ICT sections of Angono National High School, namely: ICT A to
ICT G. This method would provide unbiased participants regardless of their age,
gender, or specialization. According to (Creswell & Creswell, 2018), a handful of
researchers estimate that 10-50 participants are enough depending on the type of
research being done, with that in mind, the researchers will take 30 participants within
the Grade 11 ICT sections: ICT A through ICT G to conduct the study.
In the general setting of this research study, the researchers prioritize the
ethical concerns. Throughout the duration of the study process, the researchers will
adhere to the ethical norms and principles to protect the students’ rights and ensure
that they remain in excellent mental wellness, and provide a suitable environment for
the students to accomplish the assessment tests safely. The researchers will ask the
participants and the parents or legal guardians for their informed consent to establish a
complete understanding of the study’s goals, procedures, and the extent to which their
participation is voluntary. All of the data that is gathered from participants will be
classified before being stored safely and recorded with care. The students’ right to
privacy and confidentiality will be adhered to and will be strictly protected. The
researchers will also ask the participating advisers and teachers for ethical
authorization to ensure that the research is conducted in accordance with ethical
standards and that the participants’ rights and well-being are protected
In the course of this study, the researchers will act as the facilitators, and
interpreters. In their role as facilitators, they will guide the students through the tests,
in which they will hand out the google form link of the adopted questionnaire in
which the students will finish by themselves, to gather data on their theoretical
knowledge, and then present the students to the devices in which the hands on
assessment tests will be administered, to measure their practical knowledge. The
researchers will ensure to provide a safe space for the students to accomplish their
tasks without being harmed in any regard. The researchers will also carefully record
their anonymous scores and completion time, keeping it in safety as per ethical
standards. The researchers will also take their time analyzing said scores and time to
understand and determine the proficiency of the students with each application.
3.5 Data Collection Method
To collect the theoretical knowledge data for this study, the researchers will
apply a survey, in the form of a Multiple-Choice-Question Google Form. The survey,
adopted from the web page: “MS Office MCQ Question with Answer" by
Competitive Exam India, will have a specific section for each of the applications. The
students will provide their demographic profile in the start of the form and choose the
best answer for the question in the survey, all in self completion.
For the practical knowledge data of the study, the researchers utilizes a hands-
on assessment test which acts as an observation, wherein the researchers present a
respective application prompt to a student that was adopted from the book: “Office
Productivity” by Jemma Development Group, the prompts are hands-on activities in
the book, each application having a hands-on activity to determine the students’
practical knowledge, namely:
● Word
- Creating a document to copy an article about global warming, add a page
border and background color, then adjust the line spacing (p. 59 Hands-on 1)
- Creating a flyer, adding photos labels and prices, to design with WordArt and
text boxes (p. 85 - Hands-on 1)
● Excel
- Creating a new file and entering a set of data on the worksheet, then
computing the average grade of each row (p. 245 - Hands-on 1)
- With the same data, fill in the average of each quarter, along with the
minimum and maximum grade (p. 245 - Hands-on 2)
● PowerPoint
- Using the internet, find a province in the Philippines that you want to visit and
make a four-page PowerPoint presentation about its scenic spots, be it cultural
or recreational (p. 338 - Hands-on 1)
The researchers will acquire their practical proficiency data by measuring the
time the student takes to execute these given prompts from start to completion,
measured in minutes and seconds.
3.6 Data Analysis
The data obtained from the survey and observation will be analyzed in depth
The scores from the google form survey will be segmented into three parts to
be easily analyzed by the researchers, namely scores for the Word test, Excel test, and
PowerPoint test.
To determine the demographic profile of the students, this study will use
where:
P = percentage
from each test segment will be taken and applied to the formula to calculate the mean
of ungrouped data,
where:
n = number of respondents
To determine their practical knowledge, the researchers will also segment each
hands-on results with their respective application, then convert the time the students
spent to complete the prompts from minutes to seconds , then the researchers will
once again use the formula for the mean of ungrouped data,
where:
n = number of respondents
the researchers will then revert the calculated mean of time spent to minutes
and seconds
