THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

This chapter includes the introduction, background of the study, conceptual

framework, statement of the problem, significance of the study, scope and

delimitation, and definition of terms.

1.1 Introduction

In today's educational environment, proficiency in Microsoft Office

application has become an essential ability for students' academic pursuits. It is a

great help for educational institutions to provide their students with the requisite

knowledge and expertise in commonly used software programs like Microsoft Word,

Excel, and PowerPoint as technology continues to advance. The aim of this study is to

evaluate the Microsoft Office application proficiency of Angono National High

School Grade 11 ICT students.

1.2 Background of the Study

In this generation, the demand for digital literacy is increasing in the educational

environment. A crucial aspect of digital literacy is proficiency in Microsoft Office

Applications, specifically in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. These applications are

widely used for academic performances, such as document presentation, data analysis,

and visualization purposes.

For Senior High School (SHS) ICT students, acquiring digital literacy skills,

including proficiency in Microsoft Office Applications, is essential in their academic

pursuits. Angono National High School (ANHS) is an institution that offers SHS

strands, including ICT. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the Grade 11 ICT students'
proficiency with Microsoft Office Application at Angono National High School

because it may help them in their academic pursuits.

The main goal of this study is to determine the current proficiency of ANHS ICT

students in Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

A study conducted at Caramoran Rural Development High School provides

insights into the proficiency of G11 students in Microsoft Word, which is one of the

applications included in the Microsoft Office Application. The conclusions drawn

from the statistical analysis of the study suggest that while Grade 11 students

demonstrate competency in using basic word processing features of MS Word, there

are areas where they show less proficiency (Catanduanes State University, 2019). The

study concludes that Grade 11 students are competent enough in utilizing basic word

processing skills in MS Word, such as formatting text, saving, sharing, and printing

files, as well as inserting images, graphs, shapes, and watermarks. They are also able

to utilize other MS Word features, including spelling checker, find and replace

command, creating mail merge, and using hyperlinks. These findings indicate that

students possess a certain level of proficiency in these specific areas of MS Word.

While the evidence provided in the conclusion of the previous study offers

insights into the proficiency of Grade 11 students in Microsoft Word, there is a

notable research gap when it comes to assessing the overall proficiency of Grade 11

ICT students in Microsoft Office applications (specifically Word, Excel, and

PowerPoint) at Angono National High School. The existing study primarily focuses

on MS Word and does not comprehensively evaluate the students' competence in the

other applications.
This study proposes to conduct an assessment test that will measure the

proficiency level of ANHS SHS ICT students in using Microsoft Office applications,

particularly in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. The results will be analysed to

determine the proficiency level of the students in using these applications and to

identify areas for improvement.

This study will evaluate the Microsoft Office application proficiency of SHS

on assessment test which acts as an observation, wherein the researchers present a
respective application prompt to a student that was adopted from the book: “Office
Productivity” by Jemma Development Group, the prompts are hands-on activities in
the book, each application having a hands-on activity to determine the students’
practical knowledge, namely:

● Word
- Creating a document to copy an article about global warming, add a page
border and background color, then adjust the line spacing (p. 59 Hands-on 1)
- Creating a flyer, adding photos labels and prices, to design with WordArt and
text boxes (p. 85 - Hands-on 1)
● Excel
- Creating a new file and entering a set of data on the worksheet, then
computing the average grade of each row (p. 245 - Hands-on 1)
- With the same data, fill in the average of each quarter, along with the
minimum and maximum grade (p. 245 - Hands-on 2)
● PowerPoint
- Using the internet, find a province in the Philippines that you want to visit and
make a four-page PowerPoint presentation about its scenic spots, be it cultural
or recreational (p. 338 - Hands-on 1)

The researchers will acquire their practical proficiency data by measuring the
time the student takes to execute these given prompts from start to completion,
measured in minutes and seconds.

Frequency and Percentage, (P) p = f/n x 100

where:

P = percentage

f = number of respondent related factor (age, specialization, gender)

n = total number of respondents

To determine the theoretical knowledge of grade 11 ICT students, their score

from each test segment will be taken and applied to the formula to calculate the mean

of ungrouped data,
where:

x = total amounts of scores

n = number of respondents

To determine their practical knowledge, the researchers will also segment each

hands-on results with their respective application, then convert the time the students

spent to complete the prompts from minutes to seconds , then the researchers will

once again use the formula for the mean of ungrouped data,

where:

x = amount of time in seconds

n = number of respondents

the researchers will then revert the calculated mean of time spent to minutes

and seconds
Likert Scale

For the theoretical knowledge of each application:

Calculated mean of scores Verbal Interpretation

11-15 Very Proficient

6-10 Average proficiency

1-5 Less proficient

For the practical knowledge of each application:
