6 - Q2 Math

This document provides a lesson on addition and subtraction of radical expressions. It begins with reviewing similar and non-similar radicals. It then defines similar radicals as those with the same index and radicand. The rule given is that for addition and subtraction of similar radicals, the index and radicand remain the same and only the coefficients are combined. An activity is provided where students simplify radical expressions using this rule and compare their results to the answers given. Another activity has students perform additional addition and subtraction of similar radicals.

Guide Questions:
1. How is addition or subtraction of radicals related to other concepts of
radical?
2. What is your answer in item # 6? What have you observed with the indices
of each term?

4
3. Did you apply the rule in adding and subtracting similar radicals in this
given radical expression?

What Is It?

In the previous activity , you were able to develop the skills in adding
and subtracting radicals. Take note of the kinds of radicals that can
be added or subtracted. Similar radicals are radicals of the same
order and the same radicand. These radicals can be combined into
single radicals. Radicals of different indices and different radicands
are called dissimilar radicals.

There are terms which may not look like they are similar or like
radicals, but when some simplifications are done, they are actually like
radicals, and they can be combined.

EXAMPLES :

Perform the indicated operation and simplify each radical expression.

1. 6√2 + 9√2 − 4√2

Solution : add coefficients and annex their common radical factor

6√2 + 9√2 − 4√2 = ( 6 + 9 – 4 ) √2

= 11√2

2. 9√5 − 4√5 − 6√3 + 2√3

Solution : add coefficients and annex their common radical factor

9√5 − 4√5 − 6√3 + 2√3

= (9 − 4)√5 − ( 6 − 2 )√3 ( Group similar radicals)

= 5√5 − 4√3 ( Add/subtract coefficients of similar radicals)

Note: You cannot add the coefficients of different radicand, therefore

5√5 − 4√3 is the sum of 9√5 − 4√5 − 6√3 + 2√3 .

5
3. 7√27 + 3√75

Solution : If the radicals are not similar , rewrite each in simplified

form before performing the operations.

7√27 + 3√75 = 7√9 • 3 + 3 √25 • 3 ( Factor each radicand such that

one factor is a perfect square )
= 7൫3√3 ൯ + 3(5√3 ) ( Simplify: √9 = 3 𝑎𝑛𝑑 √25 = 5 )
= 21√3 + 15√3 ( Add the Coefficients and annex
= (21+15) √3 their common radical factor )

= 36√3

3 3
4. 5√32 − 3√108

Solution : If the radicals are not similar , rewrite each in simplified form
before performing the operations.
3 3 3 3
5√32 − 3√108 = 5√8 • 4 − 3√27 • 4 ( Factor each radicand such that
one factor is a perfect square )
3 3
= 5(2) √4 − 3 (3) √4 3 3
( Simplify : √8 = 2 and √27 = 3 )
3 3
= 10 √4 − 9√4 ( Add the Coefficients and annex
3
= (10 − 9) √4 their common radical factor )
3
= √3

5. 5√8 − 3√50 + 8√72

Solution : If the radicals are not similar , rewrite each in simplified

form before performing the operations.

5 √8 − 3 √50 + 8 √72
= 5√4 • 2 − 3√25 • 2 + 8√36 • 2 ( Factor each radicand such that
one factor is a perfect square )
= 5(2)√2 − 3(5)√2 + 8(6)√2 ( Simplify : √4 = 2 , √25 = 5 and √36 = 6 )
= 10√2 − 15√2 + 48√2 ( Add the Coefficients and annex
= ( 10 − 15 + 48)√2 their common radical factor )

= 43√2

6
3 3
6. 2 √24𝑎3 𝑏4 + 3𝑎 √81𝑏4

Solution : Write each expression in simplified radical form and

combine similar radicals.

3 3
2 √24𝑎3 𝑏4 + 3𝑎 √81𝑏4
3 3
= 2 √8 • 3 • 𝑎3 • 𝑏 3 • 𝑏 + 3𝑎 √27 • 3 • 𝑏 3 • 𝑏 ( Factor each radicand such that
one factor is a perfect cube )
3 3 3
= 2(2)(𝑎)(𝑏) √3𝑏 + 3𝑎(3)(𝑏) √3𝑏 3
( Simplify : √8 = 2, √𝑎3 = 𝑎
3 3
√27 = 3, √𝑏3 = 𝑏
3 3
= 4𝑎𝑏 √3𝑏 + 9𝑎𝑏 √3𝑏 ( Add the Coefficients and
3
= ( 4𝑎𝑏 + 9𝑎𝑏) √3𝑏 annex their common
radical factor )
3
= 13𝑎𝑏 √3𝑏

2 2
7. 4 √25 + 9 √25

Solution :
2 2
4 √25 + 9 √25

2 √2
= 4 √√25 +9
25
( Apply Division property of radicals and
split the numerator and denominator)
√2 √2
= 45 +9 ( Simplify : √25 = 5 )

What I Need To Remember

When working with radicals, remember the following:

1. Put each radical into simplest form.
• Sums and difference of radical expressions can be simplified
by applying the basic properties of real numbers.
• The sum and difference of two radical expressions cannot be
simplified if the radicals have different indices and different
radicands.
2. Perform any indicated operations, if possible.
3. Make sure the final answer is also in simplest radical form.
