Melissa found a puppy abandoned in a box on the street in Turkey where she lives with her husband. She decided to bring the puppy home and named him Spok. One night, Spok started barking nervously at the front door and pushed Melissa and her husband outside. Moments later an earthquake hit, and they discovered part of the roof had fallen on their bed. Hi, I’m Melissa.

I’m British but I moved to Turkey four years ago


since my husband works in Istanbul. He is an engineer. It was a little
hard at the beginning because I missed my old friends and family
but it’s better now. I work in a foreign languages school as an English
teacher and I teach both to children and adults. One day, a year ago
today, I was walking home when I noticed a box moving on the other
side of the street. I moved close to that box and I saw there was a
puppy inside, a white puppy with big eyes and nice floppy ears. There
was nobody in the street so I realized it had been abandoned and in
a twinkle of an eye I decided to bring it home. When I held it in my arms it seemed scared but I spoke
to him kindly and it calmed down. When I arrived home my husband welcomed the little dog warmly. It
was male and we decided to call him Spok.
One night, we were already in bed, Spok started barking downstairs at the front door. I got up and
reached him, he was quite nervous. I gave a look through the window but there was nobody outside and
nothing that could explain his behavoiur. I tried to make him stop but he got more and more nervous.
Meanwhile, my husband had come downstairs, too. Spok pushed us towards the door and suddenly
jumped trying to reach the handle. Not knowing how to calm him down, my husband and I opened the
door and we all went out. Spok started running in the garden. A few seconds later an earthquake
occurred and it was terrible. A lot of people gathered outdoors, while some buildings were being
damaged. We were scared. Later, I went inside to take a blanket and a torch and I realized that a part
of the roof had fallen on our bed. Yes, a part of the roof! Spok had saved our lives. He is our hero.
