Practice Problems
1. a) A particle moves on a circular path of radius r = 0.8 m with a constant
speed of 2 m /s. The velocity undergoes a vector change ∆𝒗 from A to B.
Ex press the magnitude of ∆𝒗 in terms of 𝑣 and ∆𝜃 and divide it by the
time interval ∆𝑡 between A and B to obtain the magnitude of the
average acceleration of the particle for (a) ∆𝜃 = 30°, (b) ∆𝜃 = 15°, and (c)
∆𝜃 = 5°. In each case, determine the percentage difference from the
instantaneous value of acceleration.

b) In the design of a timing mechanism, the motion of pin A in the fixed

circular slot is controlled by the guide B, which is being elevated by its
lead screw with a constant upward velocity 𝑣0 = 2 𝑚/𝑠 for an interval
of its motion. Calculate both the normal and tangential components of
acceleration of pin A as it passes the position for which 𝜃 = 30°.
2. During a short interval the slotted guides are designed to move
according to 𝑥 = 16 − 12𝑡 + 4𝑡 2 and 𝑦 = 2 + 15𝑡 − 3𝑡 2 , where 𝑥 and
𝑦 are in 𝑚𝑚 and 𝑡 is in seconds. At the instant when 𝑡 = 2𝑠, determine
the radius of curvature 𝜌 of the path of the constrained pin P.

3. The robot arm is elevating and extending simultaneously. At a given

instant, 𝜃 = 30°, 𝜃̇ = 10 = constant, 𝑙 = 0.5 𝑚, 𝑙 ̇ = 0.2 , and 𝑙 ̈ =

𝑚
−0.3 2 . Compute the magnitudes of the velocity 𝒗 and acceleration 𝒂

of the gripped part P. In addition, express 𝒗 and 𝒂 in terms of unit
vectors 𝒊 and 𝒋.

4. The slider P can be moved inward by means of the string S as the bar OA
rotates about the pivot O. The angular position of the bar is given by 𝜃 =
0.4 + 0.12𝑡 + 0.06𝑡 3 , where 𝜃 is in radians and 𝑡 is in seconds. The
position of the slider is given by 𝑟 = 0.8 − 0.1𝑡 − 0.05𝑡 2 , where r is in
meters and t is in seconds. Determine and sketch the velocity and
acceleration of the slider at time 𝑡 = 2 𝑠. Find the angles 𝛼 and 𝛽 which
𝒗 and 𝒂 make with the positive x-axis.
