SECTION A (40 marks)
1. Solve for 𝑥 in 32𝑥+1 + 3 = 10(3𝑥 ) ( 05 marks)

2. The straight line 𝑥 − 𝑦 − 6 = 0 cuts the curve 𝑦 2 = 8𝑥 at P and Q.


Calculate the length of PQ. (05 marks)

9. a) Given that 𝑓(𝑥) = (𝑥 − 𝛼)2 𝑔(𝑥), show that 𝑓´(𝑥) is divisible by 𝛼.

b) A polynomial 𝑝(𝑥) = 𝑥 3 + 4𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 3 is divisible by (𝑥 − 1)2 . Use


the result in (a) above to find the values of 𝑎 and 𝑏 . Hence solve the
equation 𝑝(𝑥) = 0. (09 marks)

10. Given the equation 𝑥 3 + 𝑥 − 10 = 0,


a) Show that 𝑥 = 2 is a root of the equation (02 marks)
b) Deduce the values of 𝛼 + 𝛽 and 𝛼𝛽 where 𝛼 and 𝛽 are the roots of the
equation. Hence form a quadratic equation whose roots are 𝛼 2 and 𝛽 2 .
