Issue Date: 03-11-2023 Date of submission: 08-11-2023

1. A revered heat engine absorbs 250 kJ of heat from al low temperature region and has a
mechanical input of 100 KJ. What would be the heat transferred to the high temperature region?
Also evaluate the coefficient of performance of the reversed engine when working as a
refrigerator and as a heat pump.
2. A machine operating as a heat pump extracts heat from the surrounding atmosphere, is driven
by a 7.5 kW motor and supplies 2x105 kJ/hr heat to a house needed for its heating in winter. Find
coefficient of performance for the heat pump. How this COP will be affected if the objective of
the same machine is to cool the house in summer requiring 2x105 kJ/hr of heat rejection?
3. A refrigerator operating on a reversed Carnot cycle consumes 150 W powers in summer when
the ambient atmosphere is at 310 K. The heat leakage into the refrigerator through the doors is
estimated to be at continuous rate of 15 W per degree temperature difference between the
ambient air and the cold space of the refrigerator. For continuous operation of the refrigerator,
determine the temperature at which the cold space is maintained.
4. Three Carnot heat engines are arranged in series. The first engine takes 4000 kJ of heat from a
source at 2000 K and delivers 1800 kJ of work; the second and third engines deliver 1200 kj and
500 kJ of work respectively. Calculate the exhaust temperature of the second and third Carnot
engine.
5. A heat engine is used to drive a heat pump. The heat transfers from the heat engine and the
heat pump are used to heat the water circulating through the radiators of a building. The engine
has a thermal efficiency of 27 % and the coefficient of performance for the heat pump is 4.
Determine the ratio of heat transfer to the circulating water to the heat supplied to the engine.
6. A machine operating as a heat pump extracts heat from the surroundings atmosphere, is driven
by a 36×104 kJ/hr motor and supplies 10.8×105 kJ/hr heat to a house needed for its heating in
winter. Find the coefficient of performance (COP) for the heat pump. How this COP will be
affected if the objective of the same machine is to cool the house in summer requiring 10.8×105
kJ/hr of heat rejection?
7. Two Carnot engines A and B are arranged in series between a source at 1500 K and a sink at
300 K. The heat 1000 kJ is supplied to the engine A from the source at 1500 K and rejected to
the intermediate temperature T2. Determine the followings:
(i) The work done by the engine A and B when both engines have same efficiency.
(ii) The efficiency of the engines A and B when both engines have same work done.
8. A Carnot cycles operates between two thermal reservoirs at 27oC and 277oC. Determine the
followings: (a) Its thermal efficiency if it operates as a heat engine (b) The amount of work
delivered in kW by the heat engine if 36×104 kJ/hr from the higher temperature thermal reservoir
(c) Its COP if it operates as a refrigerator (d) Its COP if it operates as a heat pump.
9. 16. A reversible heat engine operates between 875 K and 310 K and drives a reversible
refrigerator operating between 310 K and 255 K. The engine receives 2000 kJ of heat and the net
work output from the arrangement equals 350 kJ. Calculate the cooling effect of the refrigerator.
10. A Carnot cycles operates between 0 oC and 100 oC. Determine the following:
(a) Its thermal efficiency if it operates as a heat engine. (b) Its COP if it operates as a refrigerator.
(c) Its COP if it operates as a heat pump.
