2. If X is a Poisson variate with P( X = 0 ) = 0.5 then find Var (X). (2)
3. If X has uniform distribution in (-3, 3). Find 𝑃(|𝑋 − 2| < 2) (2)
4. What do you mean by Memoryless property of Exponential Distribution. (2)
5. Find E(X) and Var(X), when X is a discrete random variable taking the values 1, 2, 3, …, n with

equal probabilities. (1)

6. Find the value of the constant c such that the function

𝑓(𝑥) = { 𝑐𝑥 , 0 < 𝑥 < 3

SECTION-B
7. The probability distribution of Random variable X is given below (1)

x 0 1 2 3

P(x) 0.1 0.3 0.5 0.1

If Y = X2 + 2X. Find the mean and variance of Y.

8. The sum of mean and variance of a binomial distribution is 15 and the sum of their squares is 117.
Determine the distribution. (1)
9. It is known that an item produced by a certain machine will be defective is 0.05. If the produced
items are sent to market in the packets of 20, find the number of packets containing at least, exactly
and at most 2 defective items in a consignment of 1000 packets using Poisson distribution. (2)
10. The time required to repair a machine is exponentially distributed with parameter = ½ .

11. Calculate the correlation coefficient for the following heights ( in inches) of fathers (x) and their

sons (y) (1)

x 65 66 67 67 68 69 70 72

y 67 68 65 68 72 72 69 71

12. Fit a Binomial Distribution for the following data (2)
x 0 1 2 3 4 5 6
f 5 18 28 12 7 6 4

13. Of a large group of men 5% are under 60 inches in height and 40% are between 60 and 65 inches.
Assuming a normal distribution find the mean height and standard deviation. (1)
14. The input to a binary communication system, denoted by a random variable X, takes one of the

two values 0 or 1 with probabilities ¾ and ¼ respectively. Because of errors caused by the noise in

the system, the output Y differs from the input occasionally. The behaviour of the communication

system is modelled by the conditioned probabilities given as 𝑃{𝑌 = 1 | 𝑋 = 1} = 3/4 and

𝑃{𝑌 = 0 | 𝑋 = 0} = 7/8 . (1)

Find (i) P ( Y= 0 ) (ii) 𝑃{𝑋 = 1 | 𝑌 = 1}
