Tutorial 5 Reaction Engineering

This document provides two examples of reaction rate data from batch reactor experiments to determine the reaction order and rate constant using different analytical methods. The examples include concentration-time data to calculate the reaction order and rate constant using differential, integral and nonlinear regression methods. The goal is to determine the reaction kinetics and activation energy of the reactions.

TUTORIAL 5
CHAPTER 5: COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS OF RATE DATA

1. The irreversible isomerization A → B was carried out in a batch reactor and the following
concentration-time data were obtained:

t (min) 0 2.5 5 7.5 10 12.5 15 17.5

CA (mol/dm3) 4.00 2.89 2.25 1.45 1.00 0.65 0.37 0.02

Determine the reaction order, α and the specific reaction rate, k using differential method of
analysis based on the numerical differentiation formulas.

Subsequently calculate the activation energy, Ea of the above reaction and determine the rate of
reaction for the reactant A, -rA after 15 minutes of reaction. Given the frequency factor,
A = 200/min and reaction temperature, T = 50°C.

2. In order to study the photochemical decay of aqueous bromine in bright sunlight, a small
quantity of liquid bromine was dissolved in water contained in a glass battery jar and placed in
direct sunlight. The following data were obtained:

Time (min) 0 10 20 30 40 50 60
Concentration (mol/dm3) 4.35 2.97 2.04 1.23 0.88 0.62 0.44

Determine the reaction order, α and the specific reaction rate, k using integral method.

Subsequently calculate the activation energy, Ea of the above reaction and determine the rate of
reaction for the reactant A, -rA after 30 minutes of reaction. Given the frequency factor,
A = 10/min and reaction temperature, T = 60°C.

3. Repeat Question 1 & 2 to determine the reaction order, α and the specific reaction rate, k using
nonlinear regression.
