ON GROUND INVESTIGATION

SKARDU RESORT

SKARDU

1.0 INTRODUCTION

On the instructions of Client, a site investigation has been carried out by

Geocrust for the proposed construction of Skardu Resort.
The object of the investigation was to determine the ground and
groundwater conditions at the site and to provide information that would
assist the designer in the geotechnical aspects of the design of the
proposed works. The scope of the investigation was determined by the
client.
An interpretative report has been requested, including recommendations
on the design of proposed foundations.
The site work, which comprised Six (06) Test Pits up to maximum depth of
5.0 ft from existing ground level, was carried out on 07th & 08th October,
2023.

2.0 SCOPE OF WORK

The scope of work is summarized as:

 Drilling and sampling of Six (06) boreholes down to the target depth
of 25 ft / Gravels & Boulders / Bedrock whichever is achieved earlier
using hand auger method.

 In case of gravelly / hard strata, excavation of Six (06) test pits up to

5.0 ft depth from the existing ground level using manual method.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/23/662

Skardu Resort
 Collection of disturbed soil samples by performing standard
penetration test (SPT) at every 5.0 ft interval in the boreholes to
assist with soil classification and for laboratory testing.

 Observe and record ground water levels.

 Undertake laboratory testing to evaluate index properties of the soil

and to provide a preliminary classification.

 Prepare a report presenting the factual data of the investigation

together with comments relating to design and construction of the
proposed works.

3.0 SITE DESCRIPTION, GEOLOGY AND SEISMICITY

3.1 Site Description

The site area lies in the Gilgit-Baltistan province of Pakistan and

is accessed from Islamabad, capital of Pakistan, through
Karakoram highway. It was previously known as federally
administrated northern areas (FANA) of Pakistan. The two main
towns in this province are Gilgit and Skardu. It is bounded by
three mountain ranges namely Karakoram, Himalayas and
Hindukush. Geographically it is connected to Afghanistan in the
northwest, to China in the northeast and Province of Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa in the southwest. It is the home of many largest
mountain peaks and five of the mountain peaks are more than
8000 m high.
It borders Azad Kashmir to the south, the province of Khyber
Pakhtunkhwa to west, Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan to the
north, Xinjiang, PR China, to the east and northeast and Jammu
and Kashmir (India) to the southeast.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/23/662

Skardu Resort

3.2 Geology of the Area

Northern Areas belong mainly to the Hindukush terrain and

parts of Karakoram. Its geology is characterized by the
occurrence of thick sedimentary series of the Tethys Zone
(metamorphic) of northern Karakoram and north Hindukush and
of the volcano-sedimentary sequences of the southern
Karakoram. According to Burrard and Hyden (1908), the

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/23/662

Skardu Resort
Karakoram Range originates from near Tudok and Aling Kangri
(7314 m) in Tibet and extends up to Afghanistan.

The eastern portion of the fold is known as Karakoram range

while the western portion is known as Hindukush range.
Numerous geologic faults run near the district gilgit-baltistan,
including the regional faults designated as Main Karakoram
Thrust (MKT), Reshun Fault and Tirich Mir Fault. The faults have
caused immense structural deformations to the lithological units
exposed deteriorating the slope stability conditions and
enhancing their sediment production capability. The entire
Kararuram-Hindukush mountain regions comprised of different
geomorphic features like rugged rocky ridges, snow peaks, huge
glaciers, rivers, streams, gorges, steep valley slopes, huge debris
fans, braided river channels, glacial moraines, narrow valleys,
gorges, and remnants of the old river terraces.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/23/662

Skardu Resort
 Earthquake Information

Numerous geologic faults run across the area of interest,

including the regional faults designated as Main Karakoram
Thrust (MKT), Reshum Fault and Tirich Mir Fault. The faults have
caused immense structural deformations to the lithologic units
exposed deteriorating the slope stability conditions and
enhancing their sediment production capability.

 Major Regional Fault

These faults traverse mostly along the boundary of various

regional mountainous terrains. The faults placed into this
category include Main Karakoram Thrust (MKT), Reshum Fault
and Tirich Mir Fault. These are mapped and plotted on the
overview map, while there are other active faults which are not
mapped. These fault lines are the source for intense seismic
activity. In the last 30 years, about 30 earthquakes occurred
having a magnitude > 3.7. For all the tremors the depth was
relatively deep: about 30 to 100 km.

3.3 Seismicity of the Area

The project site is located in Zone III as per “Seismic Provisions-

2007” of Building Code of Pakistan. This zone indicates very high
degree of damage during the seismic loading. Keeping in view
the seism tectonic set up of the project site and the degree of
importance of the structures of the proposed project, it is
recommended that the structures should be designed to
withstand maximum horizontal peak ground acceleration (PGA)

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/23/662

Skardu Resort
of 0.24 - 0.32g. This PGA has 10% probability of exceedance in 50
years.

4.0 PROPOSED DEVELOPMENT

It is proposed to construct Skardu Resort which will consists of double

storey structure.
The scope of the investigation and the analyses and interpretative
reporting thereof is based on the development proposals outlined above.
If the development proposals for the site change, then the results of the
investigation and recommendations given should be reviewed by a
Geotechnical specialist to determine whether or not further investigation
or interpretative work is necessary.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/23/662

Skardu Resort
5.0 METHOD OF INVESTIGATION

5.1 General

Before start of excavation test pit it was confirmed by the client

and/or its agents, that any kind of services are not present at the
location of the test pit.
Details of the in-situ sampling and testing carried out, together
with the description of the strata encountered are given on the
test pits logs. An explanation of the symbols and abbreviations
used on the logs, together with the method of drilling is also
given in the test pits logs.
All samples were transported to the laboratory and office of
Geocrust for examination and testing as deemed necessary by
Geocrust to fulfil their instructions and as agreed by the
designer.

5.2 Excavation of Test Pits

Due to presence of gravels / hard strata, drilling of borehole was

not possible. Six (06) test pits were excavated up to 5.0 ft depth
from the existing ground level using manual method.
The coordinates and depth of the test pits are given in the table
below. The Test Pits logs are given in Appendix B.

Standard penetration tests (SPT) using a split spoon (S) or a solid
60o cone (C) were carried out in the cohesive and granular
deposits. The results are shown as N values on the test pits logs
at the relevant depths.
If SPT N values results in refusal or in excess of 50, a value of 50
was taken and recorded on logs.
Test pits location and depths are carefully selected to clearly
characterize the soil under direct influence of proposed design
under determined characteristics of the sub soil.
Stratigraphy of the various layers has been analyzed through the
information data gathered from field and laboratory testing of
test pits samples. The stratification of excavated test pits has
been given in test pits logs in Appendix C.
Field density test was tried at different depths but was not
possible due to gravely strata.
Composite samples were collected for different laboratory
testing. The samples were taken and were properly labeled to
show the Test Pit number and the depth which they were taken.
After finishing the aforementioned task, the samples were
carefully transported for subsequent laboratory testing.

5.3 Survey

The ground levels of the site with reference with the nearest
street and/or road were recorded with visual inspection.
Coordinates of the test pits were recoded with the help of GPS.

5.4 Strata Encountered

The site is mainly underlain by Silty Sand with Gravels type of

deposits.

5.5 Groundwater

At the time of Site Investigations, ground water table was not

observed up to maximum explored depth.

6.0 DISCUSSION ON LABORATORY TESTS

Discussion on various field and laboratory test results is as under:

6.1 Grain Size Analysis

This test is performed to determine the percentage of different

grain sizes contained within a soil. The mechanical or sieve
analysis is performed to determine the distribution of the
coarser, larger-sized particles. Soil consists of an assembly of
ultimate soil particles (discrete particles) of various shapes and
sizes. The object of a particle size analysis is to group these
particles into separate ranges of sizes and so determine the
relative proportion by weight of each size range. The method
employs sieving of a soil to separate the particles. The grain size
distribution curves give the exact idea regarding the gradation of
the soils. In non-cohesive soils, it is very important to identify
whether a soil is well graded, uniformly graded or poorly graded.
For this particle size is determined against 10%, 30% and 60%
passing, which may be denoted D10, D30 and D60 respectively.
The gradation curves are exhibited in Appendix C.

6.2 Natural Moisture Content

The natural moisture content is the ratio of the weight of water

to the weight of the solids in a given mass of soil. This ratio is
usually expressed as percentage. In almost all soil tests natural
moisture content of the soil is to be determined. The knowledge

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/23/662

Skardu Resort
of the natural moisture content is essential in all studies of soil
mechanics. To sight a few, natural moisture content is used in
determining the bearing capacity and settlement. The natural
moisture content will give an idea of the state of soil in the field.
The results of these tests are attached in Appendix C.

7.0 GEOTECHNICAL LABORATORY TESTING

Samples retrieved from Test Pits were examined in the field and then
transported to testing laboratory for relevant laboratory testing. The
laboratory tests were conducted on selected soil samples to determine the
engineering characteristics of the subsurface strata. Because of sandy /
gravelly nature of the strata only following laboratory test were conducted
and results are presented in Appendix C.

S. No. Type of Test No. of Tests Test Method

1. Grain Size Analysis 06 ASTM D 422

2. Moisture Content 06 ASTM D 2216

8.0 EVALUATION OF FIELD AND LABORATORY TESTS

8.1 General

The geotechnical investigations carried out at the project site

comprised field and laboratory work. The field and laboratory
investigations were aimed at evaluating the engineering
characteristics of the foundation soils. The subsequent
conditions and engineering characteristics of the soils existing at
the project site are discussed in the following sections.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/23/662

Skardu Resort
8.2 Seismicity of the Area

The project site is located in Zone III as per “Seismic Provisions-

2007” of Building Code of Pakistan. This zone indicates very high
degree of damage during the seismic loading. Keeping in view
the seismotectonic set up of the project site and the degree of
importance of the structures of the proposed project, it is
recommended that the structures should be designed to
withstand maximum horizontal peak ground acceleration (PGA)
of 0.24 - 0.32g. This PGA has 10% probability of exceedance in 50
years.

8.3 Seismic Soil Profile Characterization

Chapter 16, Division V of this code describes the procedure for

determining Soil Profile Types in accordance with Table 2-2 (Civil
& Structural Engineering: Seismic Design of Buildings & Bridges
by Alan Williams). It is recommended to use SD as soil profile
type for this site. Here SD is defined as follows;

Vs (Shear wave velocity) 600 - 1200 ft/s

Su (Undrained Shear Strength) 1000 - 2000 psf

9.0 SELECTION OF FOUNDATION TYPE

In order to be safe, the load carrying strata must be competent to sustain

the imposed loading without undergoing shear failure, and at the same
time settlements of the foundations must not exceed the tolerable limits.
Therefore, the load carrying characteristics of the strata must be evaluated
keeping in view these two considerations.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/23/662

Skardu Resort
9.1 Bearing Capacity Analysis

The subsurface strata indicate that the load carrying strata

mainly consists of cohesion less material. The bearing capacity
calculation is based on Meyerhof’s method for shear failure and
Schmertmann’s Method was used for settlement analysis.
Allowable bearing capacities for different type of foundations
(@25mm settlement) are given below in the table.
Graph between width of footing and allowable bearing capacity
is given in Appendix Figures.

Minimum Foundation Allowable

S. No. Type of Footing Depth below Existing Bearing
Ground Level (ft) Capacity (tsf)

1 Strip / Square 3.0 1.00

 Any soft / fill soil encountered at the excavation base of the

foundation should be completely removed and backfilled
with suitable granular material in a proper compaction.
 It is recommended that excavated ground must be saved
from receiving precipitation. In case of rain, it must be de-
watered and allowed for drying and only then any concrete /
lean concrete should be allowed. For the same reason, proper
surface or sub-surface drains must be provided to avoid any
change in sub surface moisture and great care must be given
to the underground pipeline works.
 Proper lean concrete must be placed under the designed
foundations and before laying it all excavated material must
be removed.

Geocrust, Islamabad GC/GT/23/662

Skardu Resort
10.0 THE EARTHWORK

Prior to any construction activity, the site must be cleared of all debris and
surface vegetation. The leveling and grading can be carried out by normal
earth moving machine. It is recommended that immediately after
excavation for construction of foundation or other substructures, the
excavation bottoms and slopes be cleared of all debris, proof rolled and
covered by a 5 cm thick blinding concrete layer.
Select fill material should consist only of inorganic material and shall have
5-10% passing the No. 200 sieve. Select fill material shall have a carbonate
content of less than 25% by weight.
