Domain, I Planning and Preparation

Danielson Domain I is the planning and preparation of a lesson. This domain is the

most important domain for lesson planning. It is what we need to do to effectively plan a

lesson. Domain 1 makes sure that we keep all IEPs and that we pay attention to all the needs

that need to be met. This Domain allows teachers to think how they will teach a certain

subject so all students can succeed. This Domain may also make teachers realize they need

to brush up on a certain content area. We need to know the content to teach it. Without

Domain I our lessons would not be successful as we may forget to reach the needs of some

students

I feel pretty confident with Domain I. I get very stressed if I do not have something

planned and prepared. I like to have things laid out so that when I plan my activities for my

lesson, I can reach the needs of all learners. I would not want my lesson plan to just be for

my visual learner. I feel confident that I would be able to plan activities, so all students have

a chance to succeed. If I do not know a content area well, I know personally I would not be

able to effectively teach it or write an effective lesson plan. I will use this time to look over

the materials and make sure I know what I am teaching. I feel confident knowing that I will

do everything that is necessary to be able to teach and plan effectively. I feel confident in

making sure I keep the state standards in mind while planning. We do this while we are

lesson planning during our time at Gwynedd, and it has been repeated multiple times.
While I feel confident in domain I, there are areas where I feel lesson confident.

Keeping the curriculum in mind is something I have never done before. What if the

curriculum tells me to teach it in a certain way that I do not understand. Keeping the

curriculum in mind is definitely an area where I do not feel comfortable in. While I feel

confident in planning activities to meet the needs of my students. I do not feel confident

knowing what needs need to be met. I know all students learn differently, but what if there is

a child that is not succeeding even with everything I plan.

Domain II

Domain II is the constant domain out of all the domains, so that means this domain

will not change with each lesson. Domain II has nothing to do with teaching. It is where

discuss how we will make a safe and respectful classroom environment. We also use this

domain to create a classroom management plan. This domain is also where we discuss how

we will support the social emotional needs of our students. Domain II is what our students

will remember for years and years. Domain II is what we do to make our students love

school and feel comfortable. Domain II is what is linked to our students success.

Domain II is where is the domain where I feel most comfortable with. When

observing in a classroom, I pay very close attention to how my cooperating teacher treats her

students. I take a lot of notes on what they do as I am very passionate about having a

classroom where my students feel safe and respected. I never felt safe and respected in my

grade school classrooms, so I want to make sure my future students do. I also find myself

using what my teachers did to my advantage by doing the opposite. I want to be the teacher I

needed in grade school. I also feel very comfortable knowing how to support the social

emotional needs of students. That is something that was stressful for us during our time here
at Gwynedd Mercy. I feel as if I am very good at reading what my students need to succeed

in school. I like to use and improve these skills as I want to be a school counselor one day. I

also like to get feedback and always try to implement it to better what I am doing. I will use

feedback and advice from veteran teachers to help improve my classroom management

skills.

While I feel comfortable with Domain II; it also makes me very nervous. I do not

have my own classroom, so I have not had a chance to practice what I am observing. I also

do not have the chance to read my students and know what they need because I am not with

them daily. I also am nervous my students may not want to listen to me, as I am young. I

struggled with this with my camp group 2 years ago. It was hard to establish a group that

respected each other, as they did not want to listen to me because I was so young.

Domain III

Domain III is the art and science of teaching. This is the domain where the teaching

actually happens. Domain I and II prepared us for this part so this part can happen

successfully. During domain III we need to make sure that our students are engaged in the

lesson. In order to make sure we are doing domain III successfully we need to make sure we

use assessment in our lesson. Domain III also includes successfully and effectively

communicating with our students. Communication is so important during a lesson, so that

our students know what we want them to do and know. This domain also entails us using

questing techniques while we teach. We also need to demonstrate flexibility while teaching.

Domain III is a part we had a lot of “training” in. At my time here at Gwynedd in

every methods class and TAP experience allows us to do this. Specifically in teaching I feel

comfortable knowing how to engage students. Younger students need activity in their
lessons to be engaged in the lesson. Having so much practice with teaching I feel

comfortable effectively engaging students in my lessons. Questing techniques are so

important, and we spent most of the science methods learning how to use them. I feel very

comfortable using questioning techniques during my lesson. I found that it is also effective

to close my lessons.

While I have had a lot of practice teaching; there are still part of teaching where I do

not feel comfortable. I do not feel comfortable in communicating what I want my students to

do when doing an activity. I have it in my brain and can show them, but I have trouble

explaining step by step. I also have trouble with flexibility because I know I can be flexible.

I have been flexible before in lessons. I just do not like changing my lesson, because I feel

like I failed my students. I feel like my original lesson was not good enough.

Domain IV

Domain IV is the professional responsibilities of being a teacher. Domain IV is so

important because it includes reflecting on teaching. Reflecting on teaching is important so

we know our teaching is effective. This Domain allows us to keep our students safe. This

domain includes us maintaining accurate student records. It also includes us communicating

with parents. Communication with parents is important for student success. Participating in

a professional community and going to professional development is a part of Domain IV

where we can improve our teaching. This domain includes us showing professionalism as a

teacher.

Domain IV is something I have only practiced in pre-student teaching. The one thing

I feel most comfortable with reflecting on my teaching. I always reflect on my lessons

whether it is a mock lesson or the real deal in pre- student teaching. I personally think
reflecting helps me improve. I also feel comfortable participating in a professional

community. I got to practice this in pre-student teaching and capstone. I was able to

participate and give my input during team planning meetings during pre-student teaching. It

gave me a great look at what I will be doing in my future. I was also able to participate in

professional development during my time here at Gwynedd Mercy through the education

outreach club. Professional development through the club helped me understand what it is

like to be a teacher, especially so young. I also feel comfortable showing professionalism as

I have practiced that in every school, I have been in.

This domain is the domain where I feel the least comfortable. While I know all

schools have a system for teacher’s to use to keep student records; it is terrifying. I have had

no practice keeping student records. I also have had no practice communicating with

parents, so I do not feel comfortable with that aspect of Domian IV. When discussing an

unwanted behavior to parents I am unsure how to communicate with a parent without

sounding mean.

Part II

As a soon-to-be distinctive mercy graduate, I feel as if I know the critical concerns of

mercy: Immigration, racism, women, non-violence, and Earth. Immersing myself into the

critical concerns of mercy is something I know I have done and will continue to do. The

critical concerns are something I will use in my classroom. I see myself advocating lives and

rights of woman in my daily life. I always fight that woman can do just as much as men can

do. Taking care of the Earth is something I am very passionate about. I also recycle and will

in my classroom. Every year I will always discuss the importance of taking care of the Earth

and model it in my classroom. Racism is something I do not tolerate. While in a classroom I

have always included all students and made any accommodation needed for my ESL

students. I will also make sure my students respect everyone no matter what race. I will

teach my students that it is okay that we may not all look the same, but we are all human

beings, and we all deserve respect. Immigration is not something I have personally

experienced yet. I will fight that all laws respect the dignity of all humans. Non-violence is

something I am very passionate about. I will promote peace in my classroom and my school.

I will make sure my students know violence is never the answer.

Teaching my students intellectual and practical skills is essential and important.

Inquiry and analysis are important for students inside and outside of school. I want to teach

them that questioning is a way to learn. Analysis is a way to get a deeper understanding of

what is happening. Critical and creative thinking is a skill that is so important. Critical

thinking can help my students succeed in school figuring out a hard assignment. Creative

thinking can help my kids think outside the box. They can use these skills in their future

employment and future education. I will allow my students to grow these skills by allowing

them to use these skills during assignments. Written and oral communication is so important

when presenting something weather that be in school or in their future employment. I will

allow my students to write creatively and present what they wrote about. Quantitative

literacy is so important. I want my students to know what a number is and also how much a

number is. I will use lots of manipulatives while explaining numbers. They will need this all

throughout life especially when budgeting. Most students can read fiction. I want them to

also know how to read informational text. I will help them with this by giving them time to

read informational text and have time to discuss it. Teamwork and problem solving can be

used to support every skill I mentioned. Problem solving and teamwork will be used in
every aspect of their life. I will allow my students to practice this by letting work in groups

and do assignments together. I will reinforce all these skills in every subject and as much as

possible. These skills are important for them to succeed in school and education.
