Surviving in the Andes
On October 13, 1972, a plane crashed into an Andes mountain. Some passengers managed to
survive. Walking in freezing temperatures, the survivors sought shelter inside the wreckage.
They had little food and no hope of rescue.
Two months later, three passengers named Roberto Canessa, Nando Parrado, and Antonio
Vizintin decided to find help. The journey was hard and tiring. However, instead of finding
an escape, they saw more icy peaks.
But hope remained. Parrado saw two snow-free peaks about 65 kilometers away. Vizintin
went back to the plane due to the lack of food while the others decided to keep going.
Fortunately, they found a small river and felt the warmth of the sun. The snow disappeared,
replaced by colorful flowers. Canessa exclaimed, "This is the valley! This is the way out."
Ten days later, on December 21st, the exhausted men arrived in the town of Los Maitenes in
Chile. A rescue team came to save the other passengers in the high Andes.
They all survived while waiting for help. The memories of the crash stayed with them, but

Transcript:
Andy: Today, I have Wendy Smith, the producer of Surviving Disaster. Hi, Wendy.
Wendy: Hello, Andy.
Andy: What’s the series about?
Wendy: It’s about how to survive natural disasters.
Andy: Sounds interesting! Can you share more about recent episodes?
Wendy: In the first episode, we focused on surviving an earthquake. We talked to people who
went through the shaking and heard their stories. We gave advice on what to do during
earthquakes, like finding a safe place under furniture.
Andy: That must be difficult. What other disasters did you cover?
Wendy: We talked about hurricanes and floods. We shared real stories from survivors and
experts’ tips.
Andy: Did you face any problems during filming?
Wendy: Yes, while we were filming the hurricane episode, heavy rain suddenly started. But
we kept going and managed to show the strength of the storm and how people protected
themselves.
Andy: How did viewers react?
Wendy: The response was very positive. People liked the useful information and found the
stories inspiring. They thanked us for the valuable knowledge they gained.
