Lesson Plan Day 5

The lesson plan describes a lesson on functional relationships for 8th grade students. The objective is for students to describe relationships modeled by graphs and provide models given function features. Materials include a projector, whiteboard, and student materials. The lesson includes an intro activity identifying equation and graph relationships. Students will take notes as the teacher demonstrates examples. For assessment, students will complete a homework assignment analyzing graph intervals and sketching graphs from descriptions.

LESSON PLAN

DATE: UNIT PLAN DAY 5 GRADE: 8 PERIOD:

TOPIC: Functional relationships

OBJECTIVE(S)/STANDARDS:
Lesson Objectives: Students will be able describe the relationship modeled by a graph, as well as
provide a model given the features of a function.
Standards: 8.F.B.5 Describe qualitatively the functional relationship between two quantities by
analyzing a graph (e.g., where the function is increasing or decreasing, linear or nonlinear). Sketch a
graph that exhibits the qualitative features of a function that has been described verbally.

MATERIALS/MEDIA:
I will teach this lesson using a projector, whiteboard, pencil, paper, and a straightedge. Students will
follow along using paper, pencil, and a straightedge.

METHODS/TECHNIQUES:
Introduction Activity (5-10 minutes): Students will complete the following activity independently or
with the students around them. I will collect their homework during this time, then we will all come
together to share answers.
Write and equation to represent the lines of the following graphs. Of the graphs, which one does not
belong? Explain why.

a. b.

c. d.

Sample Response:
1 1 4
a. 𝑦 = 2𝑥 + 2, b. 𝑦 = − 2 𝑥 + 4, c. 𝑦 = 𝑥 − 3, d. 𝑦 = 5 𝑥 + 1
Graph b does not belong because it has a negative slope, while graphs a, c, and d have positive slopes.
Process (35 minutes): Students will follow along as we work through the following handwritten
notes. Notes are subject to change as students ask and answer questions throughout the lesson. After
completing notes, the students will be given the following handout, which we will work through
together.
Conclusion (5-10 minutes): I will wrap up the lesson by asking for any more questions over the
material. Then, I will hand out the homework for the night and allow students to work on the
assignment for the remainder of the period.
Functional Relationships Handout

Let the y-axis represent height in

feet and the x-axis represent time
in weeks. A sunflower is planted at
4 feet tall and grows 3 feet over 4
weeks. It maintains this height for
2 weeks. It starts to shrink over the
remainder of the weeks, until it is 3
only feet tall.

Let the y-axis represent number of

homework assignments and the x-
axis represent time in days. You
start working with 4 assignments
due and finish them after 5 days.
Nothing is assigned for 2 days,
then 3 more are assigned over the
next 3 days.
Solutions
MODIFICATIONS
I would modify this lesson and the work attached to it by providing students with a copy of the notes
to follow ahead of time, as well as a shorter version of the work to complete. I would also allow
students to work with others if they chose, and make sure to check on them throughout the lesson and
track their understanding.

CONNECTIONS-EXTENSIONS:
This lesson could be extended into the comparison of functions and their graphs, as well as writing
and solving equations modeled in different ways, such as a graph or word problem.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
The homework assignment and its solutions are attached below. Students will need to complete the
assignment by the following class period.
Functional Relationships Name: Date:
Given the following graphs in questions 1-6, identify the intervals in which the function is
increasing, decreasing, or constant.

1. 2.

3. 4.

5. 6.
Given the verbal descriptions in questions 7 and 8, provide a graph to represent the functions.
Assume these functions are linear.

7. Let the y-axis represent a toy

plane’s altitude in feet and the x-
axis represent time in minutes. The
plane takes off at time 0 and
reaches cruising altitude at 8 feet
after 3 minutes. It maintains this
altitude for 4 minutes, until it lands
on the ground 9 minutes after the
initial take off.

8. Let the y-axis represent the level of

water in feet and the x-axis
represent time in minutes. You
start to fill a bathtub with water at
time 0 and shut off the water after
2 minutes. The water sits at 3 feet
until you drain it 7 minutes later.
The tub is empty 10 minutes after
you originally started to fill it.
Functional Relationships Name: Solutions Date:
1. Increasing from 0 to 2, decreasing from 3 to 3, constant from 3 to 5
2. Decreasing from 0 to 2, increasing from 2 to 4, constant from 4 to 5
3. Increasing from 0 to 1, constant from 1 to 4, decreasing from 4 to 5
4. Constant from 0 to 2, increasing from 2 to 4, decreasing from 4 to 5
5. Increasing from 0 to 2, constant from 2 to 4, decreasing from 4 to 5
6. Decreasing from 0 to 3, increasing from 3 to 5
