Enthalpy Change of Reaction - Students1

This document describes an experiment to determine the enthalpy change of two chemical reactions. The experiment involves measuring the temperature change over time for the reaction of zinc and copper sulfate, and sodium hydrogen carbonate and hydrochloric acid. Graphs of temperature versus time are plotted, and lines of best fit are used to determine the temperature change at a specific time. Calculations are shown to determine the heat change, moles of reactants used, and standard enthalpy change for each reaction. Questions address the meaning of the sign for enthalpy change and the objectives of the experiment.

A) Reaction of zinc and copper(II) sulfate

1. Plot a graph of temperature (y-axis) against time (x-axis). Use LARGEST scale as
possible. Label.
• You may use the grid provided in this manual or
• You may use your own graph paper
2. Draw TWO straight lines of best fit on the graph;
• The first: through the points up to t = 3 min
• The second: through the points from t = 5 min to t = 10 min.
3. EXTRAPOLATE both lines to t = 4 min.
4. From the extrapolated lines read the MINIMUM and the MAXIMUM temperatures
at t = 4 min.
• Record these values in the spaces provided below the grid.
• If you are using your own graph paper, write these values exactly as shown in
the manual.
5. Determine the change in temperature at t = 4 min.
6. Example:

Calculation:
Show all calculations/working.
1. Calculate the heat change, q for the reaction between Zn with CuSO4. State the correct unit
(2m)

2. Calculate how many moles of Zn were used in your experiment. (1m)

3. Calculate the standard enthalpy change when 1 mol of Zn reacts with an excess of the
copper(II) sulfate. Make certain that your answer is given in kJ mol–1 with the correct
negative or positive sign. (2m)

4. Explain the meaning of the sign that you have given in (3). Support your explanation
based on what you observed during the experiment (2m)
