a) Find a photo to demonstrate (1) ONE “the most advanced technology” that your group
member found on the internet. You need to paste this photo in your report [2 marks]
and explain briefly (3) THREE points introduction about this technology. [9 marks]

(5G) data networks is the 5th generation mobile network which is completely wireless
communication with almost no limitations. It has increadiable transmission speed. (5G) is
creating lot of new opportunities for people and business.

Wireless communication has started in early 1970s. From the figure above ,we can
see that the first generation (1G) provides an information transfer speed of up to 2.4 Kbps per
second. It was the simple technology where the world first get to explore. (1G) powered the
first mobile telephones using analog radio signals. It only supports voice call only. Next the
second generation (2G) was introduced for wireless transmission which then became the base
standard for further development in wireless standard. This standard was capable of
supporting up to 64 Kbps. The (2G) technology introduced call and text encryption with data
services such as SMS and MMS. The need for faster speed, global compatibility and
multimedia services has led to the development of (3G) system. (3G) provides up to 2000
Kbps per second which enabled mobile applications, video calls and location tracking.

Later in 2009 (4G) was deployed. ( 4G) is currently standard around the globe which
provides high definition video streaming and gaming. It supports HD mobile TV , video
conferencing and other features that demand high speeds. Next, the fifth generation (5G)
which has been years in the making and around 70 countries had already deployed (5G)
networks , provides maximum information transfer speed of 10 Gbps. This next generation
wireless network technology is expected to transform the way we live, work, and interact
with the world around us. With (5G) technology , we can help create a smarter , safer and
more sustainable future.

b) Find (1) ONE video [short video which is less than 10 minutes] which explains “the
most advanced technology” that your group member found on the internet. This video
will be used later in your group presentation. You can paste the video link in this report
[2 marks]. Explain briefly (3) THREE points about the content of this video [9 marks]

The video link is https://youtu.be/ayp0V1wSJCs

In this Video, it explains three points

Point 1: Swiftly connected

5g is designed to connect almost everyone and everything, whether it's a vehicle's

smart device or industrial machinery's 4g network. It will also develop into an independent
network that operates independently. With this network, we know that everyone can speed up
work and can communicate with others without limits and easily, especially in today's
increasingly challenging world. For example, technology that can connect from one machine
to another and a fast network can connect one person to another person even in different
countries

Point 2: Fast speed wireless network

5g can respond to each other through any wireless network. It also predicts a latency
figure as low as 1 millisecond compared to the 3g network which has a response time of 100
milliseconds and 4g is 30 milliseconds. With the speed of this response time, it is possible to
open a new world for anything with this robust network connection and improve the internet
connection more advanced. For example, some technologies such as self-driving cars and
drones are able to prove the power of the growing 5g network advanced.

Point 3: Maximum data transfer rate

5g will deliver up to 1000 times more capacity than 4g, which basically means more
room for connected devices and users. 5g can transmit an unimaginable amount of data that
allows perfect connection speed even on congested networks. We all know that people
always struggle with connectivity in busy places like stadiums and festivals but 5g will be
able to handle that demand without any problems. For example, in a business with huge

3
amounts of data that can flood in from customers and suppliers, so with the 5g network it will
facilitate a large influx of data at any given time.

c) Explain (2) TWO points on how this technology works/operates. [6 marks]

Radio frequencies, commonly referred to as spectrum, are used by wireless

communications systems to transmit data across the air. 5G works in the same way,
but on higher, less crowded radio frequencies. This enables it to carry more data at a
much faster rate. These higher bands are referred to as'millimeter waves' (mmwaves).
They were previously unapproved, but regulators have made them available for
licencing. They had largely gone unnoticed by the general public because the
necessary equipment was both inaccessible and expensive.

While higher bands carry information faster, there may be issues when
sending over long distances. Physical objects such as trees and buildings can easily
block them. To address this issue, 5G will employ multiple input and output antennae
to boost signal and capacity across the wireless network.

Smaller transmitters will also be used in the technology. Instead of using

single stand-alone masts, they are mounted on buildings and street furniture.
According to current estimates, 5G will be able to support up to 1,000 more devices
per metre than 4G.

Another capability of 5G technology is the ability to "slice" a physical

network into numerous virtual networks. Accordingly, operators will be able to

4
deliver the appropriate portion of network based on how it is being used, improving
network management. This implies, for instance, that an operator will have the option
of using various slice capacities according to importance. Consequently, a single user
streaming video would use a different slice of a business, and simpler devices could
be separated from more demanding and complex applications, like driving
autonomous vehicles.

Additionally, there are plans to let companies rent their own segregated and
protected network slice to keep them apart from competing Internet traffic.

d) Explain (3) THREE benefits of using this technology [9 marks]

5
e) Explain (3) THREE weaknesses this technology can bring [9 marks]

1. Limited Coverage

Generally, 5G technology is proven to have the fastest speed in transmissions.

However, there are limitations to this technology and its presence in only select cities
globally that have 5G towers. Places such as non-city and rural areas will be demanding to
cover since 5G has a short range. Government and global companies are keen to create
advancements in this technology for maximum number of city to have the coverage of 5G.
Nonetheless, a challenge that they face is the range of a 5G cell tower only covers 1 to 3
miles (1.6 to 5 kilometers) it is smaller than the 4G range that can cover up to 4 miles (3 to
6.5 kilometers).

2. Cyber security risks

Another weakness of 5G technology is it increases the risk of cybercrime. Cybercrime

has been a concern not only to the government but also globally. The risks that we face
include a larger attack surface and more entry points for malicious actors, an increased risk of
misconfiguration of networks, and potential impacts on other network functions due to
resource sharing. This happens because many IoT devices are manufactured with a lack of
security which is prevalent in cybercrime. 5G also has far more traffic routing points which
are difficult to secure in all areas.

3. Battery damages

Another limitation of 5G technology is it weakens the cellular device, by draining the

battery and reducing the lifespan. So far only a few manufacturers have introduced mobile
phones that are 5G friendly. For example,Samsung company has introduced their new version
of mobile with 5G support. While research and development are underway to manufacture
5G devices, the technology is proving to be a bane to 4G devices as it often leads to battery
damage according to experts. Another example that we can give about this research is Apple
company. We know that this company has a new version of their product which is Iphone 14
and this phone only support 4G because iphone’s battery really sensitive and the user need to
take care of the phone carefully. If the phone support 5G,the battery health will drain very
fast.

6
f) Explain (3) THREE points how this technology can be managed in an
organization/a business/an industry [9 marks]

Through technology acquisition, 5G technology can be managed in a business.

Acquisition refers to how a company obtains the technologies required for its operations. As
a result, the following technology acquisition framework can be used to manage 5G
technology in business:

Internal R&D is one method for managing 5G technology in business through

technology acquisition. Internal R&D or in house R&D (IRD) is defined as a company
activity in which it establishes and completes a research project within itself. Many
corporations have used internal R&D because it requires fewer funds to be allocated by
management. As a result, it has become the preferred option for many corporations. For
example, Telekom Malaysia (TM)’s enterprise and public sector business arm, TM ONE, has
developed a number of 5G-powered solutions to address road issues and ensure visitors have
a pleasant journey during their vacation.

In the first half of 2020, TM will test 11 5G applications in Langkawi. Smart vehicle
management is one method that can help transform Langkawi's roads. Telekom Research &
Development (TM R&D), TM's sister company and innovation arm, has created a fleet
management system for car rental companies. Using GPS that runs on 5G networks, the new
technology allows car rental companies to track each vehicle's usage pattern in real time.
