ANSWER KEY

1. Solve these equations using guess and check. Explain your

thinking.

a) 3x + 5.4 = 62.4
E.g., My first guess was 20 since that would be the solution to
3x = 60.
But 3 × 20 + 5.4 = 65.4, so that’s a bit too high.
So, I tried 19 next and got 3 × 19 + 5.4 = 62.4, so the solution
is x = 19.

b) 4x − 8 = 2x + 6
E.g., My first guess was 10 since I like 10.
The left side was 32, and the right side was 26, so they’re
close but not equal.
I decided to try 9 instead to bring the value of the left side
down.
The left side was 28, and the right side was 24. They were
getting closer, so I tried 8.
The left side was 24, and the right side was 22, so they were
even closer but not quite equal. I saw that I was 2 closer, so
the next guess should do it.
The solution is x = 7 with both sides making 20.

c) −5x + 6 = 26
E.g., My first guess was −5 since that would be the solution to
−5x = 25.
But 25 + 6 = 31, and that’s too much. So, I tried x = −4, which
is 20 + 6 = 26, so the solution is x = −4.
d) −3x − 10.5 = 5x + 5.5
E.g., I didn’t know what to try first, so I just picked x = 1.
The left side would be −13.5, and the right side would be
10.5, and those are pretty far apart.
If I chose a greater value for x, then the left side would be
more negative and the right side more positive. So, I decided
to try x = −1.
The left side would be −7.5, and the right side would be 0.5,
so I was getting closer but not yet there.
I tried x = −2.
The left side would be −4.5, and the right side would be −4.5,
so it worked. The solution is x = −2.

2. Solve these equations using inspection. Describe what you did.

a) 5x = 45
E.g., I know you multiply 9 by 5 to get 45, so x = 9.

b) −6x = 36
E.g., I know you multiply 6 by 6 to get 36, so you multiply −6
by −6 to get 36. The solution is −6.

c) x + 28 = 60
E.g., I know you add 30 to 28 to get 58, so you have to add
32 to get 60. The solution is x = 32.

d) 62 − x = 34
E.g., I know you subtract 30 from 62 to get 32, so you should
subtract only 28. The solution is x = 28.
3. For which equation is the solution x = 12?
A 12x + 12 = 132
B 4x − 8 = 8x − 52
C 3x + 75 = 212
D 4x + 10 = 6x − 14

4. Solve each equation by changing it to a simpler, equivalent equation. Show

your steps or explain your thinking.

a) 4x + 2 = −34
E.g., 4x = −36
x = −9

b) 2x − 5 = 63.8
2x = 68.8
x = 34.4

c) 3x + 5 = x − 11
E.g., First, I subtracted x from both sides to make the
equation simpler.
2x + 5 = −11
Then, I made it even simpler by subtracting 5 from both
sides.
2x = −16
Then, I got x all alone on one side by dividing both sides by
2.
x = −8

5. Explain why each pair of equations is equivalent.

a) 5x = 15 and 5x − 3.7 = 11.3
E.g., If 5x = 15, then 5x − 3.7 is 15 − 3.7, and that’s 11.3.
OR The equations are equivalent because 3.7 was
subtracted from both sides of 5x = 15 to get the other
equation.
b) 5x + 17 = 2x − 4 and 3x = −21
E.g., If 5x + 17 is 2x − 4, then 5x is 17 less than 2x − 4, which
is 2x − 21.
And 5x is 3x + 2x, so if 3x + 2x = 2x − 21, then 3x must be the
same as −21.
OR The equations are equivalent because 2x and 17 were
subtracted from both sides.
OR Think about using algebra tiles to represent the first
equation. Two of the x-tiles on the left match 2 x-tiles on the
right, so you can get rid of them. That would leave 3 x-tiles
and 17 1-tiles on the left and 4 −1-tiles on the right. You
could add 17 −1-tiles to both sides and then get rid of the 17
1-tiles and 17 −1-tiles on the left because they cancel each
other out. Then you would have 21 −1-tiles on the right and
3 x-tiles on the left, just like the second equation.

6. Which equation is equivalent to this one?

4x − 5 = 18x + 101
A 4x + 5 = 18x − 10
B 2x − 5 = 9x + 101
C 14x + 101 = −5
D 4x = 18x + 96
