2. Discussion
Transmission media is referred to the path between sender and receiver participating in network
communication. Guided transmission media and Unguided transmission media are terms used to
differentiate cable from wireless communication mechanisms. If you categorize transmission by energy
then it can be an electric signal, radio wave, or light.
Guided transmission Media (Wired media) is a data transmission mechanism based on wires. The most
commonly used guided media is twisted-pair cable, coaxial cable, and fiber-optic cable. The data
transmission rates, installation cost, and maintenance vary between each one type of cable.
Unguided Transmission Media (Wired media), on the other hand, transmit data over the air and sometimes
over waters as well, which is also called wireless transmission media. This includes electromagnetic or
radio waves, microwaves, and infrared. Wireless transmission is the most commonly used data
transmission in the present day, this includes home Wi-Fi network, satellite, cellular phone networks, etc.
3. Requirements
RJ-45 connector, crimping Tool, Twisted-pair Cable (CAT5) cable tester.
This activity emphasizes the advantages and disadvantages of Category 5 cable to the students. Students
will create the three types of network cables such as:
Option 1
You download the .apk file of Ethernet Cable Termination Simulator and install it into your Android-based
mobile phone
Option 2
1. Start by stripping off about 2 inches of the plastic jacket off the end of the cable. Be very careful at
this point, as to not nick or cut into the wires inside. Doing so could alter the characteristics of your
cable, or even worse, render it useless. Check the wires, one more time for nicks or cuts. If there
are any, just whack the whole end off, and start over.
2. Spread the wires apart, but be sure to hold onto the base of the jacket with your other hand. Do not
allow the wires to become untwisted down inside the jacket. Category 5 cable must only have 1/2
of an inch of 'untwisted' wire at the end; otherwise, it will be 'out of spec' more than 1/2 of an inch of
un-twisted wire.
3. Two end jacks must install on your cable. If you are using a pre-made cable, with one of the ends
whacked off, you only have one end to install - the crossed-over end. Below are two diagrams that
show how you need to arrange the cables for each type of cable end. Decide at this point which
ends you are making and examine the associated picture below.

Straight Through Wired Connection Diagram
This group lab activity has provided us with valuable insights into various network cables and their
applications. We've learned how to use straight-through, cross-connect, and roll-over cables with RJ45
connectors and Cat 5 cables effectively. Additionally, we've somehow honed our skills in using LAN testers
to verify connections and crimping tools for secure terminations. This hands-on experience has equipped
us with practical networking skills essential for future endeavors in the field of technology. It will serve as a
foundational part of our knowledge in network connectivity and cable management as we continue to
explore this vast domain.
<MALAZA, ALMILYN MAE C.>
In our subject networking, laboratory group activities play a pivotal role in enhancing our
understanding of various cables and tools. Recently, we delved into the intricacies of straight-through,
cross-connect, and roll-over cables using RJ45 connectors, Cat 5 cables, LAN testers, and crimping tools.
Firstly, we learned that straight-through cables are used to connect different devices. Their wiring pattern
ensures that the transmit pins on one end are connected to the receive pins on the other end. This
facilitates seamless data transmission between devices such as computers and switches.
On the other hand, cross-connect cables are employed to connect similar devices. By crossing
over certain wires within the cable's structure, they enable direct communication between devices like
switches or routers. Lastly, roll-over cables serve a unique purpose in connecting a computer to a router or
switch console port. They employ an unconventional pinout arrangement that allows for easy configuration
and troubleshooting.
During our laboratory group activity, we also discovered how crucial it is to use high-quality
materials such as Cat 5 cables for optimal performance. These cables ensure reliable data transmission
with minimal interference. Furthermore, we became adept at using RJ45 connectors to terminate these
cables effectively. The crimping tool played an essential role in securing these connectors onto the cable
ends securely. To validate our work and ensure proper connectivity before deploying these cables in real-
world scenarios, we utilized LAN testers. These invaluable tools helped us identify any wiring faults or
connectivity issues promptly.
Overall, this laboratory group activity has imparted valuable knowledge about different types of
network cables and their applications. We now understand how straight-through, cross-connect, and roll-
over cables can be used effectively using RJ45 connectors alongside Cat 5 cables. Additionally, we have
gained proficiency in utilizing LAN testers for verifying successful connections while employing crimping
tools for secure terminations. Undoubtedly, this experience has equipped us with practical skills necessary
for future endeavors in the networking field. As we continue to explore the vast realm of technology, this
laboratory group activity will remain a cornerstone in our understanding of network connectivity and cable
management.

Through this activity, it taught me about Category 5 (CAT5) cables and their applications in
networking by focusing on three cable types: straight-through, cross-connect or cross-over, and roll-over. I
learned to create these cables and understand their specific uses. Also, this task also emphasised the
value of careful cable handling, particularly when removing the plastic jacket and making sure the twist
ratios are correct. It was crucial to prevent nicks or cuts that would impair the operation of the cable.
Additionally, the activity underscores the importance of cable testing, utilizing a cable tester to ensure the
cables' integrity. This hands-on approach equips me with practical knowledge, essential for connecting
various network devices and troubleshooting, making me well-prepared for the real-world.
Through this activity, I gained a profound understanding of network media, delving into the
distinctions between guided and unguided transmission media. The exploration of wired transmission,
including twisted-pair, coaxial, and fiber-optic cables, allowed me to grasp the nuances of data transmission
rates, installation costs, and maintenance considerations associated with each type. The hands-on
experience of crafting three vital network cables – straight through, cross-connect, and roll-over – using
crimping tools, RJ-45 connectors, and Category 5 cables enhanced my practical skills.
The activity's focus on cable termination emphasized the critical need for precision to avoid altering
cable characteristics. Testing these cables with a cable tester and connecting them to network devices
underscored the real-world applicability of the knowledge gained. The integration of a mobile application for
cable termination simulation added a tech-savvy dimension to my learning, reinforcing my comprehension
of networking essentials. Overall, this activity equipped me with the skills to design, implement, and
troubleshoot network cables, laying a robust foundation for practical networking expertise.
