Q.1
A spring-mass system consists of a 10 kg mass and a spring with a stiffness of 4000 N/m. The
mass is subjected to a harmonic force F(t) = 25cos(20t) N.
a) Briefly discuss the role of frequency ratio (w/wn) in the steady-state response. (2 marks)
b) Find the amplitude of the forced motion (steady-state response) after 1 second (t=1s).
(3 marks)

Q.2
a) Derive the equation of motion and specify the equivalent mass, equivalent spring constant
and equivalent damping coefficient. (3 marks)
b) Find the value of the damping ratio and, based on that, discuss the system’s response. (2
mark)
c) If the system undergoes the initial conditions provided below, find the response of the
system (calculate the response’s constants). (3 marks)
Q.3
The bar shown below has a mass of 30 kg and a length of 2.6 m. A spring k and a damper c are
attached to the bar at its two ends. After applying an initial disturbance to the system, the
oscillations of point P are monitored. The displacement data is shown in the plot where the time
scale is calibrated (seconds), but the displacement scale is not.
