the following data, brake drum diameter= 600mm, brake rope diameter =
3cm, dead weight= 24kg, spring balance reading= 4kg, speed of the crank
shaft= 7.5rps.
2. The following data refers to a twin cylinder 4 stroke petrol engine.
Cylinder diameter= 200mm, stroke= 300mm, crank shaft speed = 300rpm,
effective brake load= 50kg, mean circumference of the brake drum= 4m,
mean effective pressure= 6bar. Calculate brake power, indicated power
and mechanical efficiency?
3. The following observations refer to a test trial on a single cylinder diesel
engine, Brake Power= 75kW, Brake Thermal Efficiency= 35%,
Mechanical Efficiency = 90%, Calorific Value of the Fuel= 40000kJ/kg.

4. A 4 cylinder 4 stroke I C engine develops an indicated power of 50kW
at 25cycles/sec. The stroke of the engine is 90mm and bore is 0.8 times
the stroke.
a) Calculate the mean effective pressure in each cylinder?
b) If the mechanical efficiency is 80%, what effective brake load would
be required if the effective brake drum circumference is 1m?
5. A single cylinder 4 stroke engine develops an indicated power of 7.5kW.
The mean effective pressure is 6.6bar and the piston diameter is 100mm.
Calculate the average speed of the piston?
6. From a test on a four stroke petrol engine, following data is available:
Engine Speed 1000 rpm, Net Brake Torque 70 N-m, Indicative Mean
Effective Pressure 10 bar, Stroke 150 mm, Bore 100 mm, Rate of Fuel
Consumption 2.57 kg/h, CV of petrol 41000 kJ/kg. Calculate the Indicated
Thermal Efficiency, Brake Thermal Efficiency and Mechanical Efficiency.
7. A four stroke diesel engine has a bore of 100 mm, stroke of 120 mm
and piston speed of 10 m/s. The engine develops 20 kW power per liter
of cylinder stroke volume. Brake thermal efficiency of the engine is 30 %
with a fuel having calorific value of 40 MJ/kg and specific gravity of 0.90.
Determine (i) rpm, (ii) BP, and (iii) engine fuel requirements in liters/h.
8. The power output of a six-cylinder four stroke diesel engine is given by
a law which is BLN/20000 KW, where BL is the brake load in newton and
N is the speed in rpm. The bore and stroke of the engine are 90 mm and
120 mm respectively. Fuel consumption is 5cm3/s and its density is 800
kg/m3. Determine the following (i) the brake power (ii) the torque and (iii)
the brake specific fuel consumption, if the brake load is 600 N and speed
of engine is 2000 rpm.
9. A six cylinder, four stroke IC engine develops 100 kW of brake power
at 800 rpm. The stroke to bore ratio is 1.5. The indicated mean effective
pressure is 8 bar and mechanical efficiency is 80 %. Determine the
cylinder diameter and piston stroke of the engine.
10. A four cylinder two stroke petrol engine with stroke to bore ratio of 1.2
develops 32 kW at 2500 rpm. The mean effective pressure on the piston
is 8 bar and mechanical efficiency is 85 %. Determine (i) the diameter and
stroke of each cylinder and (ii) the brake thermal efficiency, if the fuel
consumption is 9 kg/h having calorific value of 44000 kJ/kg
11. A four cylinder, four stroke engine running at 1000 rpm develops an
indicated power of 15 kW. The mean effective pressure is 5 bar.
Determine the cylinder diameter and piston stroke of the engine When the
ratio of diameter to stroke is 0.8.
