Stages of Matter

This lesson plan is for a 3rd grade science lesson on the stages of matter. The goal is for students to be able to identify the three stages of matter with 100% accuracy and understand what items have what type of matter after conducting experiments sorting items and observing what happens when ice cream is mixed with soda. The lesson will begin with a discussion of the stages of matter, a sorting activity, and an experiment where students observe ice cream coating the carbon dioxide in soda to create a contained gas. Assessments include observations during the sorting activity and experiment. The lesson differentiates instruction through targeting different senses and allowing partner work if needed.

Lesson Topic/Title

Stages of matter

Standards/Quality Indicators/Skills
(Missouri and national standards, quality indicators, and skills addressed by this lesson )
www.missourilearningstandards.com

PS1.A.1 Predict and investigate that water can change from a liquid to a solid(freeze), and back
again(melt), or from a liquid to a gas (evaporation),and back again(condensation) as the result of
temperature changes

Learning Outcomes/Goals
(The lesson’s objectives and learning outcomes appropriate for meeting curricular and student need)
Include the GOAL of the lesson and learner outcomes in correct four-part format.
GOAL:
 Students will be able to identify the three stages of matter with 100% accuracy
 Students will be able to sort different items into the right stage of matter

LEARNER OUTCOME(S):

 After Sorting items students will have an understanding of what items have what type of matter
 After conducting an experiment students will be able to Grasp the concept of the three stages of
matter

Differentiation
To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences, cultural and language differences, etc., ask questions such as:

What will I differentiate: content, process, product, environment & affect?

How will I differentiate: for readiness, interest, learning profile, affect/learning environment, combination?

- Targeted different senses

- Journal ideas

Accommodations or Modifications
Address as required per individual student Individualized Education Plan (IEP)
Accommodations = changes the way students ACCESS the material (e.g., extended time, interpreter, distraction-free environment)
Modifications = alters the performance standard (e.g., lower reading level, reduced number of test questions or responses)

- Dairy free ice cream

- Several types of soda
- Partnering up if needed

Assessment – Progress Monitoring

(Assessment(s) before, during, and after the lesson) Align assessments with outcomes and procedures. Utilize a variety of assessment tools. Indicate
Depth of Knowledge (DOK) for each assessment.

- Experiment

Lesson Structure and Procedures

(Sequence of events of the lesson elements - The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g., Prior Knowledge, Engagement/Opening, Procedures,
Guided Practice, Closure)

Before
- I will have students think about what matter is, what is matter? What are the three main
types of matter? We will hold a group discussion on these questions
- I will go over the three main types of matter
o Solids, liquids, gas
- Next we will do a sorting activity as a class
o We will go over what items are what and why they are classified as that type of
matter
- After that we will move onto our experiment
o I will prompt the students by asking them questions such as What state of matter is
the cup in? What state of matter is the soda in?
o I will have students create a hypothesis of what they think is going to happen when
the ice cream hits/mixes with the soda.
o Students will gather their materials and head back to their desk
o I will propt students to fill their cup with soda as I am passing the ice cream out
o I will ask students to open their ice cream and mix it with the soda and tell them to
watch and take note what happens.
After
- Once we finish our experiment and students are enjoying their floats, we will hold a group
discussion
o I will explain how the ice cream coated the co2 in the soda to create a contained gas.
