About the School

The Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law was born in 2006 within the precincts of the 2200 acre lush, green campus of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. This school enjoys the rare distinction of being the only law school within the IIT system. It offers a 3 year residential LLB course with an emphasis in intellectual property laws. A rigorous regimen rules the day right from the time an aspirant applies for admission to the school. Students are selected through a National Level Entrance Test followed by a Group Discussion and an Interview. Students must not only have either a degree in engineering or a post-graduate degree in science, but also a legal acumen to become a part of the school. Only the sharpest make it to the annals of the school. In the three years of stay the students receive a firm grounding in general laws and are exposed to intellectual property laws from the second year onwards. The laws relating to Copyright, Patents Trademarks and Designs are as much a part of the curriculum as the Law of Torts, Corporate Laws or Criminal Law. The School strictly implements the Bar Council of India syllabus with 21 core law subjects like Constitutional Law, Commercial Laws, Corporate Laws, International Trade Laws and others. The school takes pride in its unparalleled modern state-of-the-art infrastructure on campus. A high speed internet backbone follows students everywhere, from the school to the room, the library to the mess. Major legal databases like Westlaw, HeinOnline, Manupatra etc are accessible from almost anywhere on campus. Students divide their academic time between classes and libraries. The school has an in-house library with subscriptions to various journals and reference books. Students also access books and resources on engineering, humanities and social sciences at the IIT Central Library, which boasts of being the biggest among all IITs and the one of the largest in Asia. The sylvan surroundings of the campus coupled with formal and informal interdisciplinary discussions make learning an experience in itself.

Why Recruit from RGSOIPL

It goes without saying that the Rajiv Gandhi School of Law is a law school with a difference. For one, the students enter at an average age of 22 years bringing with them a higher level of maturity and better understanding of the world around them. All students enter with strong foundations in their core areas of graduation. Many come with work experience, presently ranging from two to ten years. They bring with them a scientific mindset which is then metamorphosed with a legal acumen. This coupled with interdisciplinary learning enables students to understand the technical aspects related to laws. For example, a mechanical engineer studying in RGSOIPL comprehends both the legal and the technical aspects of Laws of Contract. This apart, the students are well equipped to take part in arbitration proceedings in various industrial sectors, from biotechnology to aerospace, from electronics to automobiles. Doubtless, students are 'trained' to handle several aspects of life at RGSOIPL!
