Problem 1: Assignment 4: Runway Obstacles and Wind Rose Analysis
Problem 1
A hotel chain approaches the Punta Cana Airport to build a 130-foot tall hotel on the northern side of runway 08-26 (see Figure
1).
a) Determine the minimum distance x required to build this hotel. For this analysis assume that the airport wants your input
using FAA regulations. They are doing the ICAO standards separately with another consultant. The Punta Cana airport has a
single 3,100 meter non-precision runway with visibility minimums as low as 3/4 mile. In the analysis check the following criteria:
• FAR Part 77 imaginary surfaces
• New FAA runway siting standards and,
• Geometric design distances explained in Chapters 2 and 3 of the FAA AC 150/5300.
b) Determine if a 75 foot tall tree located 3000 feet outside the airport property and aligned with the extension of runway
threshold 26 is an obstruction to navigation. State the imaginary surface checked in this analysis.

are Drawn to Scale. Proposed Hotel Location and Tree Location are not to Scale.

Problem 3
You are given an old Wind Rose for the Punta Cana airport as shown in Figure 2.
a) Find the ICAO critical crosswind component needed to design the runway orientation of the Punta Cana airport if the
runway is 3,100 meters and the largest aircraft operating at the airport is the Boeing 747-400.
b) Determine the optimal orientation of the runway if this was a new airport site with the wind data provided.
c) Assuming runway 08-26 is the only runway used in the future, find the percent of the time the design crosswind
determined in part (a) is exceeded at the airport.
