Position Paper-The Republic of Benin-Topic B
Position Paper-The Republic of Benin-Topic B
The delegation of Benin can not let nuclear accidents continue happening because it can
make countries in the West Africa region suffer the consequences of the incompetence of
developed countries with nuclear capability, let’s remember the unknown number of lost
nuclear armaments around the world from the United States of America. Benin seeks to
protect the people of our country and the countries of the West Africa region, since we, as the
West African region, could be devastated by a nuclear accident. For this, the Republic of
Benin has joined the IAEA and signed treaties like the Non-proliferation Treaty.
Benin seeks to not only protect our people but the people of the region of West Africa. Some
countries in Africa are currently developing ideas for a nuclear armament program, while the
Republic of Benin opposes the proliferation of nuclear weapons, we state that the existence of
nuclear weapons carries with it’s use, adding to our previous statement, we should also
consider that nuclear armament carries the risk of nuclear accidents, which we know how
devastating they are. For this, Benin seeks more security in the operation of power plants by
first making inspectors from the IAEA check the power plants before opening them.
This delegation justifies its position through previous acts of concern about nuclear power
and how it should be managed. As stated before Benin is part of the IAEA and we have asked
for ten international legal instruments to help us develop nuclear technology. Benin also
expressed concern for the development of nuclear weapons as previously said. We believe
that accidents where nuclear armament is gone missing are due to the incompetence of a
nation and they are not capable of having nuclear weapons.
