Creating PDF Files: Adobe PageMaker 6.5x & 7.

1. Install PPD and Install PDF Settings.
PPD (PostScript Printer Description) for printer setup, and PDF settings for Acrobat Distiller.
Instructions for obtaining and installing the PPD, and for obtaining and installing the PDF settings are included in the
file named “CMW_Page_FileSpecs.pdf ”. This file is available for download through the Cadmus MediaWorks Web site.
“CMW_Page_FileSpecs.pdf ” also contains guidelines for PDF file naming, page geometry requirements, and general file
construction considerations. Connect to:
www.cadmusmediaworks.com
Click on the icon for “Cadmus MediaWorks Digital File Specs” and then on the link for “The Windows files can be
found here.” Click on the link for “Specifications” and then right- or Control-click on the link for the file named
“CMW_Page_FileSpecs.pdf ” to begin its download.
Follow the instructions on page 2 of the specs file for download and install of the PPD. Follow the instructions on
pages 2 and 3 of the specs file for the download and install of the PDF settings (Distiller Job Options settings).

2. Define a Printer Style.


Save settings for printing to PostScript.
a. Launch Adobe PageMaker.

b. From the “File” pull-down menu choose “Printer


Styles > Define....”.

c. In the “Define Printer Styles” window, click on


“New...”.

d. Type in a name for the printer style.


In the example at right, “Publication Name” was
chosen as the name of the printer style. Often, the
designer will name the printer style by the name of
the publication to which it applies, as the printer style
will contain settings specific to the publication size.
e. Click “OK”.

f. The name of the new printer style now shows in the


list. Select the style and click “Edit...”.

g. For “Printer” choose “Prinergy Refiner on FILE” and
for “PPD” choose “Prinergy Refiner”

h. All other settings must match what is shown at right.

i. Click “Paper” to continue.

j. Click on the field for “Paper Size” to choose
“Custom...” and the “Custom Paper Size” window
will pop up.
For “Width” and
“Height”, type in
measurements
exactly one inch
greater than the
true-trim size of
the publication
and then click “OK”.
Note: In this example, the PageMaker document is
set up to a width of 8.25" and a height of 10.875".
k. All other settings in the “Print Paper” window must match what is shown above right.
l. Click “Options” to continue.

m. All settings in the Print Options window must
match what is shown at right.

n. Click “Color” to continue.

p. Click “Features” to continue.

q. The field for “Resolution” in the Print Features
window must be set to “Printer’s default”.

r. Click “OK”.

Save the Printer Style
s. Click “OK” to save the printer style.

3. Print to PostScript.
Create PostScript files from PageMaker.
a. Open the Adobe PageMaker file.
b. From the “File” pull-down menu, choose “Printer
Styles > [name of printer style]” to access all of the
settings stored in that style.
c. Click the radio button for “Ranges” and type in the
page number for the page to be included in thePost-
Script file. Note that single-page files are our standard.
d. Click “Options”.

Choose name and destination for the PostScript file.


e. Type in a name for the PostScript file.
Note: For file naming convention, refer to the document
named “CMW_Page_FileSpecs.pdf ”.

f. Click “Browse...” to navigate to the folder in which


the PostScript file will reside. Note that users of an
automated Cadmus MediaWorks Create & Certify
solution will navigate to the appropriate “hot” folder
on a network volume.

3. Print to PostScript. (continued)
Save the PostScript file.
g. Click “Save”.

h. Click “Save”.

The page you have specified will be printed to a PostScript


file and delivered to the destination folder selected.

The resulting PostScript file can now be Distilled to PDF


with the Cadmus MediaWorks Job Options settings in
Acrobat Distiller.
