1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background of the Study
In today's digital age, social media consumption is a widespread issue along with
its effects on academic achievement. A lot of students spend a lot of time on social
media sites, which might cause distractions and lower academic output. As the statistics
show, use of social media networks (SMNs) are very common among college students
worldwide. According to a report by Hootsuite (2022), Saudi Arabia was ranked as the
number-one country in the growth of social media users. With the advancement of
technology and internet speed, investigating how SMNs affect students has become an
absolute necessity.
Academic performance, which is measured by the examination result, is one of
the major goals of a school. Hoyle (1986) argued that schools are established with the
aim of imparting knowledge and skills to those who go through them and behind all this
is the idea of enhancing good performance.
Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they
create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and
networks. The Office of Communications and Marketing manages the main Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube accounts.
Between students, social media is used to communicate with their classmates. It
is also used when academic performances are conducted. The social media platforms
help improve the students' academic performance and increase their knowledge through
gathering data and information. Students visit various online platforms to gather
information to solve their assignments (De La Cruz, 2017). Students primarily use these
social media platforms: Messenger (for communicating), Wikipedia (for references),
Facebook (for updates), Instagram (for photo sharing), YouTube (for video tutorials), and
many more.
The researchers can better understand how social media use affects Grade 10
students' academic performance by performing this research and filling in the knowledge
gaps. This information will be used to create targeted interventions and tactics that will
make sure students can benefit from social media while still succeeding academically: 1.
The primary goal of this study is to investigate the connection between Grade 10
students' use of social media and academic achievement. It looks into whether
excessive social media use has a negative effect on students' academic performance. 2.
Data collection: Surveys or interviews will be used to gather information from Lugait
National High School's Grade 10 students for the study. These techniques can be used
to learn more about how students use social media, such as how much time they spend
on each site, what kinds of content they consume, and how they feel it affects their
academic performance. 3. Academic Performance Metrics: The research may take into
account elements like the students' grades, participation in class, completion of
assignments, and performance on standardized examinations in order to evaluate their
academic performance. 4. Analysis and interpretation: Following the collection of data,
the study should use the proper statistical analysis methods to look for any relationships
or trends between social media use and academic achievement. A thorough and
impartial interpretation of the results is required.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
This study will aim to find out the effects of Social Media Usage on Academic
Performance among Lugait National High School Students Grade 10 Students.
Specifically, this paper seeks to answer the following questions:
1. What is the demographic profile of Grade-10 student in Lugait National High
School in terms of:
a. Age
b. b. Preferred Social Media
2. What is the academic performance of Grade-10 students at Lugait
National High School?
3. Is there any significant relationship between age and academic performance of
Grade 10 students in Lugait National High School?
4. Is there any significance different between preferred Social Media and
Academic performance?
5. What are the ways of using social media for studying?
1.3 Scope and Delimitation of the Study
The main purpose of the study is to know the effect of social media usage
on academic performance among grade 10 students in Lugait National High School. The
study considers the demographic profile of the respondent in terms of age and preferred
social media.
The researchers will limit the respondents to 00 male and female students
in Lugait National High School of School Year 2023-2024. Each of the respondents will
be given a 00 questionnaire to answer. The students selected will come from different
sections to prevent bias.
1.4 Significance of Study
This section presented the significance of the study that are beneficial to the following:
Students. The findings of this study will help them to responsibly use Social Media so as
to promote their academic performance.
Teachers. This study will help the teachers of the school to know the influence that
social media has on their students.
Parents. The parents will be able to know the possible effects these social media usage
has on their children, so as to serve as watch-dog to their children on the usage of the social
networking site.
Community. This study will help them to know the effect of social media usage.
1.5 Theoretical Framework
The multitasking theory. The Multitasking Theory suggests that the use of social media
and other online activities can lead to multitasking behaviors among individuals, especially
students. Multitasking in the context of social media often involves simultaneously engaging in
social media activities (such as browsing Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter) while also attempting
to focus on academic tasks (such as studying, reading, or doing homework).
According to this theory, multitasking can negatively impact academic performance for several
reasons:
1. Cognitive Overload: Engaging in multiple tasks at once can overload the
cognitive resources of an individual. Constantly switching attention between academic
tasks and social media can reduce the overall effectiveness of studying or learning.
2. Reduced Focus and Concentration: Multitasking often leads to reduced focus
and concentration on each individual task. Academic tasks require sustained attention,
and distractions from social media can disrupt this focus.
3. Impaired Learning and Memory: Studies have shown that multitasking can impair
learning and memory retention. When attention is divided between tasks, the brain's
ability to encode information and transfer it to long-term memory is compromised.
4. Procrastination: Social media platforms can serve as outlets for procrastination.
Instead of focusing on academic tasks, students may find themselves spending
excessive time on social media, delaying their work and affecting their overall academic
performance.
It's important to note that the relationship between social media usage and academic
performance is complex and can be influenced by various factors such as the individual's self-
discipline, the nature of social media activities, and the overall time management skills of the
person involved. Researchers continue to explore this relationship, considering different
psychological and behavioral theories, to gain a better understanding of how social media
impacts academic performance.
Figure 1 shows the important parts in gratification theory: Cognitive overload, Reduced
Focus and Concentration, Impaired learning and Memory, and Procrastination.

1.6 Conceptual Framework
Academic Performance According to Fredricks. Filsecker, and Lawson (2016),
academic performance speaks to the level of performance that a man ready to achieve
specific targets of exercises in educational conditions, for particular in school, college,
and university. On the other hand, York, Gibson, & Rankin (2015) defined academic
performance as an intellectual objective in educational frameworks which can be
characterized either through the size of learning picked up which can be called attention
to by assessment, examination point, test scores, and GPA, or basic reasoning, self-
adequacy, subjective improvement, and non-psychological advancement space.
Therefore, in the context of this writing. Academic performance relates to the students'
performance results that demonstrate the degree to which he/she has achieved
particular objectives that were the focal point of exercises in educational situations,
particularly in university.
Social Media According to Hepworth, Rooney, Rooney, and Strom-Gottfried
(2016), social media are creating a digital communication network that allows the user to
share information in which the public can subscribe or produce information content as a
transmitter and receiver of data. While Buettner (2016) presents social media as basic
web tools that allow the public and companies to create, share data, considerations,
photographs, exchanges and virtual systems. Therefore, social media are websites
and/or applications that allow users to create and offer items or participate in social
media.

1.7 Definition of Terms
To enable a better understanding of the study, the following terminologies
were operationally or defined:
Academic performance. Academic performance is the measurement of student
achievement across various academic subjects. It is used to assess the extent to which
a student, teacher, or institution has attained their short or long-term educational goals
Social media usage. Provides students with multiple ways to connect virtually
with others.
Social media. Provides students with multiple ways to connect virtually with
others (family, friends/peers, teachers, members of interest groups, and even strangers).
Studying. Sharing educational resources on social media can expand students'
learning experiences by exposing them to a variety of opinions, research findings, and
learning materials.
2. REVIEW RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES
Social media keeps changing continuously, as such, it is difficult to assign a fixed
definition to it as Jacka and Scott (2011), argued that ‘’there is no single recognized
definition for social media’’. However some scholars have defined it in different
perspectives over the past years. For instance, Kaplan and Haenlein (2010), defined
social media as a group of internet- based applications that build on the ideological and
technological foundations of Web and allow the creation and exchange of user-
generated content. The Oxford Dictionary (2011), also defined social media as “websites
and applications used for social networking”. Another definition of social media is that it
is a ‘’communication channel which is very popular, extremely fast and broad, has
proven to be highly effective, as well as trusted by billions of people, to share and
discover content concerning individuals, brands, information, entertainment and know
how’’ (Dearborn, 2014).One characteristics that all these definitions support is that social
media involves some form of communication between individuals over the internet. There
has been tremendous improvement since this era and today there exist uncountable
social networking sites either developed for local use, specific purpose or international
use. Kaplan and Haenlein (2010).
Rithika M. Sara Selvaraj (2013) India has a large social and mobile audience and
ranks third globally in terms of internet users. Students are being distracted from their
schoolwork by social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, Orkut, etc. Students
use staff email less frequently than they utilize social media. Social media offers
chances to interact with friends, classmates, and individuals who share interests, despite
the loss of privacy and safety. These days, a student's primary goals should be their
education and future careers. On the other hand, a lot of students rely on social media
for information accessibility. This implies a lessened emphasis on information retention
and learning. The popularity of social networking sites among students is another finding
of the study.
Social media, according to Junco al et (2010), are a collection of online websites,
services, and habits. encourage cooperation, community building, participation, and

but with pals not at school. Many people feel more at ease when they use social
networking. Belong to a group. Because of its growing popularity, economists and
scholars are wondering whether the amount of time kids spend on these sites has no
effect on their grades (Choney, 2010).
Per the research by Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010), social networking
websites capture students' attention and then divert it to non-educational and unsuitable
activities such as meaningless chatting. Based on the preceding statement, we can
conclude that social networking sites may have a negative impact on a student's
academic life and learning experiences. Trusov, Bucklin, and Pauwels (2009) stated that
while the Internet is undeniably a progression of technology, social networks, in
particular, are particularly dangerous for youngsters. Social networks have been
extremely popular and well-known in recent years.
Barton, B. A. 2021, the effects of social media usage on attention, motivation,
and academic performance. Social media use is widespread, and while there have been
concerns stated about how social media use affects academic achievement, there has
been little and inconsistent study in this area. 659 undergraduate and graduate students
completed surveys in order to find out the connection between social media use and
overall academic performance. Additionally, the survey aimed to investigate whether
attention (controlling time and study environment) and motivation (regulating effort) have
any moderating effects on this relationship. The use of social media and attention were
excellent predictors of academic achievement. Similarly, academic achievement was
significantly influenced by motivation, which was a predictor that went beyond social
media usage. There was not any noticeable moderation among the three variables.
These relationships' implications are examined.
According to Hameed, Irfan; Haq, Mirza A.; Khan, Najmonnisa;Zainab, Bibi.
(2022) Due to students' excessive usage of mobile devices, social media has had a
significant impact on their everyday life. Students utilize social media for both personal
and professional goals. Academicians are currently dealing with pedagogical challenges
as a result of the rising use of social media, and the topic of whether or not social media
use impacts student performance emerges. In light of this, the purpose of this study is to
investigate, using the cognitive load theory as a framework, how social media use
affects students' academic performance. Design, technique, and strategy: 220 valid
answers to an online survey given to university students were obtained using a
quantitative research approach. Using AMOS version 24, structural equation modeling
was utilized to test the presented assertions. Results: Results showed that social media
Structural equation modeling using AMOS version 24 was used to test the claimed
assertions. Results: It was shown that using social media for non-academic objectives
negatively impacted students' academic achievement. Furthermore, social media
multitasking and usage for academic reasons had little impact on students' academic
performance. Practical implications: The study's findings may be utilized by academic
policymakers of institutions and regulatory organizations to mitigate the association
between students' academic performance and "social media usage for non-academic
purposes." Most notably, social media self-control failure.
