3 Flanged Beams Practice Problems

This document contains 7 practice problems related to the design of reinforced concrete T-beams. The problems provide dimensional details of various T-beams and ask the reader to calculate properties such as moment of resistance, design reinforcement, and load carrying capacity. The problems are from a course on design of reinforced concrete structures and involve the use of limit state design methods.

Doubly Reinforced Beams Practice Problems

Q 1) A simply supported T beam of span 9 m in reinforced concrete has the following dimensions :

Flange width = 2000 mm

Flange thickness = 150 mm

Overall depth = 750 mm

Rib width = 300 mm

The beam is provided with 6 no 32 mm diameter HYSD bars of grade Fe 500.

Concrete used is M25:

Find the moment of resistance of the beam using limit state method.

Q 2 ) A T – beam slab floor of an office comprises a slab 150 mm thick spanning between ribs spaced at 3m centres .
The effective span of the beam is 8 m. Live load is 4000 N/m^2 . Using M20 grade concrete and Fe 415 HYSD bars,
design one of the intermediate T-beams.

Q 3) An isolated simply supported T- beam has a flange width of 2400 mm and flange thickness of 120 mm. The effective
span of beam is 3.6 m. The effective depth of beam is 580 mm and its width 300 mm. It is reinforced with 8 – 20 mm
diameter Fe 415 bars. Determine the moment of resistance of the section. Use M 20 concrete.

Q 4 ) A hall is covered by a beam and slab system with beams placed at 3.0m c/c. The effective span of the beam is
8.35 m. The thickness of the slab is 120mm. The size of the beam below the slab is 230mm width and 380mm depth.
The beam is reinforced with two numbers of 32mm diameter steel rods of grade 415 MPa. Compute the maximum total
load/m run, the beam can carry including its own weight at service stage. Grade of concrete M25.
Q 5) A T-beam effective flange width of 1.0 m and an effective depth of 500 mm and the slab thickness = 95 mm and
breadth of the web = 250 mm. The beam is reinforced on tension side only with total tension steel area of 2943.75 𝑚𝑚2 .
Calculate the limiting moment of resistance, if M 30 concrete and Fe 500 are used.

Q 6 ) Design the reinforcement for a T beam for the following data :

Effective span = 8m; Ends are simply supported

Spacing of the beams = 3.3m centre to centre

Thickness of slab = 130mm

Width of web = 300mm

Total depth = 450mm

Live load on the floor = 10kN/m^2

Floor finish load = 0.75kN/m^2

The beam also supports a partition wall which transmits a load of 12kN/m run. Use M 20 concrete and Fe 415 steel

Q 7 ) A T – Beam has the following data width of the flange = 750mm breadth of the beam = 250mm , Effective depth
= 500mm , thickness of flange = 90mm , Applied moment = 300kN-m , Design the beam use M20 concrete and Fe415
steel .
