An Afternoon of Relaxation
BY: PAMELA STERN

On Friday, November 10th Spring Creek

Senior Partners (SCSP) were treated to an
Afternoon of Relaxation that was sponsored in
part by Metro Health Plus and Coun-cilman
Charles Barron’s office.
This event ran for two hours from 12 noon
to 2pm. Eighteen members of SCSP attended
this wonderful event. Attendees received back
and hand massages from professional
massage therapists. Each massage lasted for
approximately five to seven minutes. In
addition, to the hand and back massages
light refreshments were served along with a
spa like atmosphere with relaxing music, and
the seniors were introduced to breathing
exercises and relaxation techniques.
SCSP received great feedback about the
event from the seniors. “Many stated that
they needed the massages and to learn how to
relax more. They would like to see more
events geared around relaxation.
“I believe the event went well. The older
adults were very receptive to the activities of
learning how to relax. They were actively
engaged in the breathing exercises and the
dimming of lights to set the mood of
relaxation. They appreciated the healthier
snacks as well,” said Robin Devonish, NORC
Supervisor.
This event concluded with many thanks
and the SCSP staff was getting ready for their
next event of the day, which was Bingo.

Lights On Afterschool
event—a cross country in-

thousands of parents, stu-
dents and teachers to spread
awareness regarding the im-

This initiative was launch-
ed in 2000 by the Afterschool
Alliance and is geared toward
underscoring the importance of afterschool programing and its
dedication to providing safe and affordable access to educational
activities for children. Additionally, afterschool programing is a crucial

Community Profile: DPS Officer Joseph Smith Retires

After 39 Years
BY AMANDA MOSES

For over 39 years, Department of Public

Safety (DPS) Officer Joseph Smith patrolled
the streets of Spring Creek Towers (SCT,
formerly known as Starrett City). Whether
he began his tour around the community
at midnight or during the early hours of the
morning, Smith was ready to walk the
beaten path at any time to ensure
residents’ safety.
There are 46 buildings in SCT, and
Smith has patrolled through all of them
and their respective pathways at some
point in his tenure. For Smith, there is no
better way to get to know the residents in
the community than on foot, which is why
he has never used a patrol car.
“I don’t believe in riding. I like to hear
people if they are calling me. It’s 46
buildings and close to 20,000 people here,
and I enjoyed everything,” Smith said.
As of November 3rd, DPS Officer Smith
hung up his hat, handed in his gun and
badge, and prepared to walk down a new
path—retirement, becoming a man of
leisure. After nearly four decades of service,
Smith says it feels good to be able to kick up his feet after years of standing
on them, which were in desperate need for some time off.
“It feels good. It’s just has just added something new to me,” Smith told
the Spring Creek Sun. “I just have to learn to deal with what I have to deal
with because it is just different getting up every morning, not knowing what
you’re doing, not knowing that you have to go to work or whatever.”
While it can be a bit daunting not having a daily routine after decades of
work, Smith says he has several at-home projects he yearns to work on, as
well as catching up with his favorite sports teams.
But 39 years as an officer of the peace has left Smith with a lot of
memories. When someone says they’ve seen and been through it all, Smith
isn’t exaggerating.
Smith was no stranger to danger, from being caught in the middle of a
gun fight, to having to wrestle perpetrators to the ground, and even
carrying a maintenance supervisor out of a burning building, he has
experienced the good, bad, and the ugly. Especially working during the
1980s in East New York when crime was at an all-time high.
He also recalls the good moments like celebrating SCT’s 10th anniversary
in 1985, which featured a Ferris wheel, rides, and an assortment of
dignitaries who took part in the revelry. He shared that he even met
members of the Clinton family during a visit to SCT, which afforded him an
opportunity to have a few moments to personally speak with Hillary
Clinton.
Smith has even delivered two babies while on the job, both on separate
occasions. One delivery will always be at the forefront of his mind. It was
1995 and occurred during the early hours of the morning while he was the
only DPS officer nearby.
“When I got to the location, I was the only one around and I didn’t know
what I was doing,” Smith said smiling as he recalled having to tap the baby
on the backside to make sure she was breathing. Once he heard the loud
cry, he let out a breath of relief himself (along with the new mother and her
family).
While this interaction would be a memory none of the participating
parties would forget, Smith says that he always remained in contact with
the family and when the little girl turned 18 years old, she invited Smith to
her wedding. It was an unforgettable moment and an honor for Smith, who
felt like his actions had created an everlasting bond.
Many of his interactions with the residents and their children have often
been positive because he is a firm believer in working with families to create
a nurturing environment. Many of the children he met in the community
are now adults with their own families, and some have stopped Smith
during his patrol to inform him that without his guidance they would have
strayed down a dark path.
“A lot of people who I knew as kids that grew up here, a lot of them today
they see me, and they say: ‘Thank God for you because I could have been
put away for a long time.’ But I worked with the community and some of
these guys grew up, got married and have children now. One guy came up where he was bestowed a plaque memorializing his tenure in Spring Creek

As he prepared for his final days on the beat at SCT, he shared that he during his final years at SCT, commemorated his retirement by gifting him

“The Curse” (TV-MA) — Known usually for beautifully captivating the big
screen in films like “La La Land” and “Cruella,” actress Emma Stone
decided to produce and star in a television series that premieres on Nov.
10! Stone portrays Whitney Siegel, wife of Asher (Nathan Fielder), and
together, the pair star in a home-improvement show called “Flipanthropy.”
The concept of the show is simple: Whitney and Asher flip buildings in the
lower-class area of Espanola in ways that are supposed to reflect the
community. But when their careless actions don’t reflect their “honest”
intentions, a young girl from the community places a curse on them just
as they are trying to conceive their first child. The genre-bending series is

through the pretense of being virtuous. (Paramount+)
“The Killer” (R) — Director David Fincher (“Gone Girl”) went neo-noir for
his latest action thriller, which premieres on Nov. 10. Fincher also brought
actor Michael Fassbender (“X-Men: Dark Phoenix”) back to the big screen
after a four-year hiatus from movies. Starring in the lead role, Fassbender
plays a haunting professional assassin deemed “The Killer,” who is a
master of his craft. Even though he thinks he has his fatal methods down
to a science, one of his hits goes left. Once the cracks start to appear in his
previously sturdy foundation, he’s on the fast track to a terrible
psychological crisis. Tilda Swinton (“Asteroid City”) and Charles Parnell
(“Top Gun: Maverick”) also co-star. (Netflix)

“Fool’s Paradise” (R) — Another comedic actor — Charlie Day (“It’s Always
Sunny in Philadelphia”) — has decided to put on his director’s hat for the
first time. In this satirical comedy out on Nov. 10, Day stars as a patient
who gets released from a mental hospital that can no longer afford to treat
him. He resorts to selling oranges on the street, where he is then found by
a Hollywood producer who claims he has an uncanny resemblance to the
failing method actor Sir Tom Bingsley (also played by Day). The producer
then hires him to replace Bingsley, which quickly propels him from
homelessness into stardom. Even though the cast is full of heavy hitters —
Ken Jeong, Adrien Brody, Jason Sudeikis, Edie Falco, Jason Bateman, and

Local Middle Schools Walk for Breast Cancer Awareness

By Amanda Moses

During the last week of October, both Gateway Intermediate

School (IS) 364 and Frederick Douglass Academy (FDA) VIII
made strides against breast cancer with their annual walk
around the community.
Donning bright pink shirts, the middle schoolers walked
around the many winding paths in Spring Creek Towers (SCT)
to raise awareness of the dangers of breast cancer and the
importance of early detection.
Makayla Haywood, 10, shared that it makes her feel good to
be a part of her school’s breast cancer walk because with each
step she hopes to make a difference.
“I feel that this breast cancer walk is a nice way to spread
awareness,” Haywood said. “I think it’s important to do these
walks because it’s a nice way for students and scholars to
spread awareness and let other people know how important
early detection is.”
Mia Miller agreed, adding that she has several family
members who have succumbed to the deadly disease. In light of
this, she vows to always wear pink in October for those who
survived and passed away from breast cancer.
“I agree, when you wear pink in October it shows that you are
[proudly] walking for a breast cancer cure,” Miller said.
“It gives awareness to people who might be struggling with
cancer and lets them know that people are supporting them and
are there for them,” Dae’lah Barbier, 13, said.

and their love for their fans with the help of a translator.
For the band members, the opportunity to go on a world tour was a
dream come true.
“We’re very grateful and thankful that we can go on a world tour and only
a few months after our debut,” Sumin said.
“We’re just really excited to see roady and perform in front of them,
especially [since] there’s [new] choreography and all of our world tour

There is an intensity behind the relationship between xikers and their
fans, something that is interwoven through passion and an endless love for
one another. For Yujun, xikers music speaks for itself and in a way is its

“In a sense, music is technically a sort of communication, and to be able

that can do so in an even better way and to not just be as a sort of comfort
but be able to communicate different sorts of emotions would be so such a

Yujun said.
During the tour, roady were able to experience both mini albums from

“There’s a lot of new sidetracks that [we] weren’t able to perform before

of them, I think, [are] from our B-side tracks. And then on top of that,

While this was frustrating for many, other fans told the Spring Creek

“I am going to see ATEEZ for the second time and PSY for the very first

important being that it’s been 120 years since Koreans have arrived to

the K-Pop culture continues to grow.”
Friends Rue, Allie and Jill dressed in their favorite ATEEZ inspired
outfits and brought their light sticks out to cheer on their favorite group.
“[ATEEZ] are the kings of performance,” Rue said smiling.
“I am really excited because I loved when all ATINY [the group’s fanbase

The opening act for the four-hour showcase included a powerful
rendition of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” by Kim Taewoo.
