Detailed Syllabus
Course Description: Electricity is dangerous, However, electricity is very useful and has become
essential in modern life. Electricity is used in houses, farms, plants, factories, public places, and
practically every working place for lighting, operating appliances, and machines. By proper precautions,
electricity can be used very safely. Safety precautions to be taken at various stages from design,
operation, and maintenance should be known and understood by concerned personnel. Safety rules and
regulations, by taking safety precautions at every stage and by adequate safety training to personnel the
electricity can be used very very safety.

Unit-1
Introduction to Electrical Safety, Shocks and their Prevention

Terms and definitions, objectives of safety and security measures, Hazards associated with electric current, and voltage, principles
of electrical safety, approaches to prevent Accidents.

Electric Shocks: Primary and secondary electrical shocks, possibilities of getting electrical shock and its severity, medical analysis of
electric shocks and its effects, shocks due to flash/ Spark over’s, prevention of shocks, safety precautions against contact shocks,
flash shocks, burns, residential buildings and shops.

Unit-2
Safety during Installation of Plant and Equipment

Preliminary preparations, preconditions for start of installation work, during, risks during installation of electrical plant and
equipment, safety aspects during installation, field quality and safety during erection, personal protective equipment for erection
personnel, installation of a large oil immersed power transformer, installation of outdoor switchyard equipment, safety during
installation of electrical rotating machines, drying out and insulation resistance measurement of rotating machines.

Unit-3
Electrical safety in Residential, Commercial & Agriculture installations

Wiring and fitting – Domestic appliances – water tap giving shock – shock from wet wall – fan firing shock – multi-storied building –
Temporary installations – Agricultural pump installation –Do’s and Don’ts for safety in the use of domestic electrical appliances.

Unit-4
Earthing
Necessity of earthing, Types of electrical earthing, Equipment earthing: Objective, Types of earth electrodes, Methods of earthing:
plate earthing, pipe earthing and coil earthing, earthing resistance factors, Determination of maximum permissible resistance of the
earthing system, Measurement of earth resistance: voltmeter-ammeter method, earth tester method, ohm meter method and
earth loop tester method, System Grounding: neutral grounding (System Grounding), Types of Grounding, Methods of Earthing
Generators Neutrals, Comparison between equipment earthing and system grounding.

Unit-5
Electrical Safety Management

Introduction, Electrical Safety Program Structure, Employee Electrical Safety Teams & Meetings, Safety Audits, Elements of Good
Training Program, Training Program Setup. Electricity rules, acts and significance: Objective and scope – ground clearances and
section clearances – standards on electrical safety - safe limits of current, voltage, Rules regarding first aid and firefighting facility,
