Factor Theorem LP

This lesson plan aims to teach students about the factor theorem. The objectives are for students to be able to use the factor theorem to determine if a polynomial is a factor, give the remainder when dividing polynomials, and appreciate the factor theorem. The lesson contains an activity, examples demonstrating the factor theorem, and practice problems for students. It concludes with a review of the key points and an assignment for students to study the topic further in their book.

Detailed Lesson Plan

I. Objectives:
- At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
 Use the factor theorem to determine whether or not the first polynomial is a factor of the
second;
 Given the remainder if the second polynomial is divided by the first;
 Appreciate the factor theorem..

II. Content
 The Factor Theorem

III. Learning Resources

 Materials:
 Text book
 Marker/Chalk and board
 Manila paper

 Reference
 Mathematics Learner’s Material Unit 1 (pp. 74-78)

IV. Procedure
Teachers Activity Students Activity

Preliminary Activities

(Student assigned will lead the prayer.)

Good morning, class. Before we start, everybody

please stand and let us pray. Please lead the prayer Good morning Ma’am!

Mr./Ms. _________. Yes Ma’am!

Good morning Grade 10 students!

The checking of attendance is based on your sit plan if you

are not on your proper sit, it means you are absent.
Understood?

a. Review

Before we proceed to our topic today. Let’s have a short Remainder Theorem
recall about your topic last time. Class, what was your last
topic all about?

That’s right, very good. Who can tell me how can we find the We can use either of the two ways but for me it
remainder when P(x) is divided by x-r? is easier to use the syntethic method to get the
remainder.

Very well said. Class, let’s give them____ a coca cola clap
please. (Students will perform coca cola clap)

(The teacher will first demonstrate the coca cola clap)

It is great to know that you’ve really mastered our previous

lesson.

b. Motivation

Let’s have an activity first before we proceed with our next

topic.

Broken Hearted

Directions:I will call 5 boys and 5 girls to stand in front. I will Yes Ma’am!
give the broken hearts to the students. What are you going Factors
to do girls is to find the factors of the quadratic equation that
you are holding on the boys to make the heart complete. Did (x + 4)(x + 3)
I make myself clear?
(x - 5)(x - 2)
Quadratic Expression
(x + 10)(x - 1)
2
x + 7x + 12
(x - 3)(x + 3)
2
x - 7x + 10
(x + 2)(x - 2)
2
x + 9x - 10
2
x -9
2
x -4 Yes ma’am.

c. Analysis

Very good class! Now, are you refreshed about the factors?
Very good !

Our topic for today class is about the Factor theorem.

d. Presentation of the new Lesson

The polynomial P(x) has x-r as a factor if and only if P(r) = 0.

Proof: There are two parts of the proof of the Factor

theorem, namely:

Given a polynomial P(x),

1. If (x-r) is a factor of P(x), then P(r) = 0.

2. If P(r) = 0, then (x-r) is a factor of P(x).

Example 1: Show that (x-1) is a factor of 3 x 3 − 8 x 2 +3 x +2.

Solution:

Using the factor theorem, we have:

P(1) = 3(1)3 − 8(1)2 +3(1)+ 2

¿ 3 −8+ 3+2

P(1)= 0

Since P(1)=0, then x-1 is a factor of 3 x 3 − 8 x 2 +3 x +2.

Example 2: Show that (x-2) is a factor of 2 x+ x 3 +7 x 2 − 40 .

Solution:

By inspection the dividend is not in standard form, so there

is a need to rearrange the terms of a polynomial. We will
have x 3 +7 x 2+2 x − 40 .

Using the factor theorem, we have:

P(2) = 23 +7( 2)2 +2(2)− 40

¿ 8+7 (4 )+ 4 − 40

¿ 8+28+ 4 − 40
P(2) = 0 No ma’am!

Since P(2)=0, then x-2 is a factor of x 3 +7 x 2+2 x − 40 .

Any questions?

None Ma’am!

e. Application

Use the factor theorem to determine whether or not

the first polynomial is a factor of the second. Then, give the
remainder if the second polynomial is divided by the first.

1. x − 1; x 2 +2 x+5
2. a − 1; a 3 − 2 a2+ a −2
3. y +3 ; 2 y 3+ y 2 −13 y +6

Now who can try to solve on the board?

I will try ma’am.
Very good class! Kindly give yourselves a sounding

Coca cola clap.

f. Generalization

What is a factor theorem?

What are the two parts of the proof of the factor theorem?

g. Assessment
Use the factor theorem to determine whether or not
the first polynomial is a factor of the second. Then, give the
remainder if the second polynomial is divided by the first.

1. (a+ 1); 2 a3 +5 a2 −3
2. (c +2); c3 +6 c2 +3 c −10
3. (x +3); − 4 x 3 +5 x 2+ 8
4. (x − 4 ); 2 x 3 − 9 x 2 +9 x − 20

h. Assignment

Study your book on page 82-86..

Question class?

Alright, that’s all for today, goodbye and see you tomorrow!
