Chapter 1
Problem and its Background

Introduction
A broken homes refers to a situation where the family unit experiences a
disruption in its structure, often due to divorce, separation, or the absence of one or both
parents. This phenomenon has become increasingly prevalent in today’s society, impacting
countless families and, consequently, the educational journey of their children.

There is consequences of a broken homes on the academic performance of senior high school
students are both complex and far-reaching. Firstly, the emotional turmoil that arises from a
broken family can have a significant impact on a student’s ability to focus and concentrate on
their studies. The constant stress, anxiety, and uncertainty that accompany such family
dynamics can create a hostile and distracting environment, making it challenging for students
to fully engage in their academic pursuits.

The absence of limited involvement of one or both parents can deprive students of the
necessary support and guidance crucial for their educational development. Parental
involvement plays a pivotal role in shaping a student’s motivation, discipline, and overall
academic success. When there is a lack of parental presence or when parents are preoccupied
with their own personal struggles, students may feel neglected, unsupported, and
unmotivated, leading to a decline in their academic performance.

The financial strain that often accompanies a broken family can also have an adverse effect
on a student’s academic journey. The division of resources and the additional expenses
associated with a broken family can limit access to essential educational resources, such as
tutoring, extracurricular activities, or even basic school supplies. This lack of resources can
create a disparity in educational opportunities, hindering a student’s ability to reach their full
potential academically.

The disruption of family dynamics can lead to social and behavioral challenges that further
impact a student’s academic performance. Students from broken families may experience

Understanding the effects of a broken homes on the academic performance of senior high

Statement of the Problem

This study aims to investigate the impact of broken families on the academic performance of
senior high school students in Santa Cruz, Marinduque. Specifically, it seeks to explore the
following questions:

1. What is the prevalence of broken homes among senior high school students in Santa Cruz,
Marinduque?

2. What are the emotional and psychological effects experienced by senior high school
students from broken homes in Santa Cruz, Marinduque?

3. How does the absence or limited involvement of one or both parents influence the
academic performance of senior high school students in Santa Cruz, Marinduque?
4. What are the financial constraints faced by senior high school students from broken
families in Santa Cruz, Marinduque, and how do these constraints impact their access to
educational resources?

5. How do the social and behavioral challenges resulting from broken families affect the
academic performance of senior high school students in Santa Cruz, Marinduque?

6. Are there any significant differences in the Academic Performance of Senior High School
students based on the duration of broken home experiences?

By addressing these research questions, this study aims to provide a comprehensive


understanding of the effects of broken families on the academic performance of senior high
school students in Santa Cruz, Marinduque. The findings will contribute to the existing body
of knowledge and assist educators, parents, and the community in implementing targeted
interventions and support systems to mitigate the negative impact of broken home and
promote academic success among these students.

Null Hypothesis

“There is no significant relationship between broken family status and the academic
performance of senior high school students in Santa Cruz, Marinduque.”

This null hypothesis assumes that there is no impact or influence of a broken family on the
academic performance of senior high school students in the Santa Cruz. The purpose of
conducting the study would be to gather evidence to either reject or fail to reject this null
hypothesis based on the data analysis and findings.
Significance of the Study

1. Academic Intervention: Understanding how broken homes impact academic performance


can help educators and school administrators identify students who may be at a higher risk of
academic difficulties. This knowledge can lead to the development of targeted interventions
and support systems to address the specific needs of these students, ultimately enhancing
their academic performance.

Definition of Term

2. Academic Performance: Academic performance pertains to the level of achievement and


success demonstrated by students in their educational pursuits. In this study, academic
performance will be measured using indicators such as grades, test scores, attendance
records, and academic achievements.

3. Senior High School: Senior high school refers to the final two years of the secondary
I’lleducation system in the Philippines. It caters to students aged 16 to 18 years old and offers
specialized tracks or strands aligned with their chosen career paths.

4. Santa Cruz,Marinduqu: Santa Cruz specific geographical area within the municipality of
Santa Cruz, located in the province of Marinduque, Philippines. It is important to note that
the study will focus on the senior high school students in this particular of santa Cruz
