Standard:
The code followed to perform this test is ASTM-C1512015.
Apparatus:
• Le Chatelier’s apparatus
• Water bath
• Weighing balance
• Mixing pan
• Oven
• Room or humidity cabinet
• Scale
Procedure:
First of all, a 500 𝑔𝑟𝑎𝑚𝑠 sample was taken and it was splited in two portions. A paste was
made using water 25% of the cement sample. Then placed in VICAT apparatus in a cup and
then plunger was allowed to penetrate 𝟏𝟎𝒎𝒎 𝒊𝒏 𝟑𝟎 𝒔𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒅𝒔. The plunger did not penetrate
10 mm in 30 seconds so the percentage of water was increased by 10% and again the plunger
did not cross the 10 𝑚𝑚 mark on the VICAT apparatus. New 250 grams sample was taken and
30% water was added in it and then the paste was placed in the VICAT apparatus and the
plunger was allowed to penetrate this time the 10 mm mark was crossed in 30 second.
A new sample was prepared by mixing cement and water which was 0.78 𝑡𝑖𝑚𝑒𝑠 the water used
to achieve 10 𝑚𝑚 penetration. The paste was then filled in Le Chatelier apparatus and both
ends were covered with glass and tightened to prevent water absorption in the paste. The
apparatus along with paste was then placed in water at room temperature for 24 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 to
expand. After 24 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 the expansion was noted down and then the same sample placed in
boiling water to expand for 3 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠. After 3 ℎ𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑠 the expansion was noted down.

Observation:
𝑆𝑎𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑒 𝑤𝑒𝑖𝑔ℎ𝑡 = 250 𝑔
𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑎𝑑𝑑𝑒𝑑 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑑 𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑠𝑖𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 = 75 𝑔
𝑃𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑅𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 = 10 𝑚𝑚
𝑇𝑖𝑚𝑒 𝐹𝑜𝑟 𝑃𝑒𝑛𝑒𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 = 30 𝑠𝑒𝑐
𝑊𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑟 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝐿𝑒 𝐶ℎ𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑟𝑠 𝑎𝑝𝑝𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑡𝑢𝑠 𝑝𝑎𝑠𝑡𝑒 = 58.5 𝑔
Calculation:
Expansion after 24 hours at room temp. = 2.5 mm
Expansion after 3 hours in boiling water = 2.5 mm
Results:
Total Expansion observed of the paste after the experiment was 5𝑚𝑚
Comments:
The cement used was expired may be that’s why it showed same value of expansion at room
temperature and in boiling water. May be if we used fresh cement the result would be
different at both room temperature and in boiling water.
