EE-212-L ECD Lab 5

This lab experiment involves designing and implementing a power amplifier using the LM380 integrated circuit to drive a 10Ω load at 5W. Students are required to collect datasheets, design the power amplifier circuit to meet specifications, apply input signals, measure output power and efficiency, observe waveforms for distortion, and analyze harmonics. A report detailing the circuit, calculations, setup, results, waveforms and conclusions is required. The goals are to understand power amplification using ICs, design and implement a power amplifier, and analyze performance characteristics including distortion.

EE-212-L – ELECTRONIC CIRCUITS DESIGN LAB

Exp 4. Implementation of Power Amplifier using LM380

Learning Objectives

✓ Understanding the use of integrated circuit for power amplification.

✓ Design and implementation of Power amplifier for a specific load
Background and Specifications of the Lab Task
The LM380 is a power amplifier for consumer applications. In order to hold system cost to a
minimum, gain is internally fixed at 34 dB (50V/V) . A unique input stage allows ground
referenced input signals. The output automatically self-centers to one-half the supply voltage.
However, it needs a coupling capacitor at the output. Uses include simple phonograph amplifiers,
intercoms, line drivers, teaching machine outputs, alarms, ultrasonic drivers, TV sound systems,
AM-FM radio, small servo drivers, power converters, etc.
Pre-Lab Tasks
✓ Collect datasheet of LM380 and pay attention to critical parameters for power amplifier
design and report them (such as Vs, Av, Isc, Pd, THD)
✓ Design a power amplifier for 10Ω/5W load i.e., find Vi(p-p) and Vcc required. Verify using
power efficiency and maximum power dissipation that the package has required electrical
and thermal characteristics. In case of non-compliance, report the issue and suggest
appropriate modification in the design specification or the circuit

Lab Tasks

✓ Apply a sinusoidal signal from function generator of calculated amplitude corresponding to

2W load power and observe the response of the power amplifier. Note the current and
power drawn from the supply and verify that it is according to the theoretical calculations.
Report power efficiency of the power amplifier.
✓ Observe signal on oscilloscope. For any distortion adjust parameters accordingly and report
them. Use FFT tool of the oscilloscope to see how higher order harmonics appear in the
spectrum for distortion. Read and record first 3 dominant harmonics and use them to
estimate THD.
