1.0 INTRODUCTION
Machine learning in Education is one of the most popular sub-fields of Artificial Intelligence.
Machine learning in Education concepts are used almost everywhere, such as Healthcare,
Finance, Infrastructure, Marketing, Self-driving cars, recommendation systems, chatbots, social
sites, gaming, cyber security, and many more. Currently, Machine learning in Education is under
the development phase, and many new technologies are continuously being added to Machine
learning in Education. It helps us in many ways, such as analyzing large chunks of data, data
extractions, interpretations, etc. Hence, there are unlimited numbers of uses of Machine learning
in Education. In this topic, we will discuss various importance of Machine learning in Education
with examples. So, let's start with a quick introduction to Machine learning in Education. The
term Machine learning in Education was coined in 1959 by Arthur Samuel, an IBM employee
and pioneer in the field of computer gaming and artificial intelligence. The synonym self-
teaching computers was also used in this time period. Alhnaity B, Pearson S, Leontidis G,

Kollias S (2020)

By the early 1960s an experimental "learning machine" with punched tape memory,
called Cybertron, had been developed by Raytheon Company to analyze sonar signals,
electrocardiograms, and speech patterns using rudimentary reinforcement learning. It was
repetitively "trained" by a human operator/teacher to recognize patterns and equipped with a
"goof" button to cause it to re-evaluate incorrect decisions. A representative book on research
into Machine learning in Education during the 1960s was Nilsson's book on Learning Machines,
dealing mostly with Machine learning in Education for pattern classification. Interest related to
pattern recognition continued into the 1970s, as described by Duda and Hart in 1973.In 1981 a
report was given on using teaching strategies so that a neural network learns to recognize 40
characters (26 letters, 10 digits, and 4 special symbols) from a computer terminal. Attaran M,

1.1 WHAT IS MACHINE LEARNING IN EDUCATION?

Machine learning in Education is a branch of Artificial Intelligence that allows machines to learn
and improve from experience automatically. It is defined as the field of study that gives

3
computers the capability to learn without being explicitly programmed. It is quite different than
traditional programming. Dubey SR, Jalal AS (2019)
1.2 OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY
Herbst J (2020) The primary objective of utilizing machine learning in education is to enhance
the learning process by leveraging data-driven insights and personalized learning experiences.
Through the application of machine learning techniques, educators and institutions aim to
achieve the following objectives:

 Personalized Learning: Tailoring educational content and resources to cater to the

specific needs and learning styles of individual students, thereby fostering a more
effective and engaging learning experience.

areas of improvement, enabling educators to intervene proactively and provide targeted
support to enhance student outcomes.
 Automated Grading and Feedback: Automating the grading process and providing instant
feedback to students, thereby saving time for educators and allowing them to focus more
on personalized instruction and mentoring.

1.3 SIGNIFICANT OF THE STUDY

Jordan MI, Mitchell TM (2020) The significance of machine learning lies in its ability to process
and analyze vast amounts of complex data, leading to valuable insights and practical applications
across various fields. The key significance of machine learning includes:

1. Data-driven Insights: Machine learning enables organizations to extract meaningful

insights from large datasets, facilitating informed decision-making and strategic planning
based on accurate and real-time information.
2. Automation and Efficiency: By automating repetitive tasks and processes, machine
learning enhances operational efficiency, reduces human errors, and optimizes resource
utilization, leading to cost savings and increased productivity.
3. Personalization and Customization: Machine learning algorithms facilitate personalized
experiences for users by tailoring recommendations, services, and products based on
individual preferences, behaviors, and historical data, thereby enhancing user satisfaction
and engagement.
4. Predictive Analysis: Machine learning models can forecast future trends, behaviors, and
outcomes based on historical data patterns, enabling businesses and organizations to
make proactive decisions and develop effective strategies to stay ahead of the
competition.

4

and provide valuable insights, empowering decision-makers to make informed and data-
driven choices, thus minimizing risks and maximizing opportunities for success.

1.4 IMPORTANCE OF MACHINE LEARNING IN EDUCATION

Although Machine learning in Education is continuously evolving with so many new
technologies, it is still used in various industries. Machine learning in Education is important
because it gives enterprises a view of trends in customer behavior and operational business
patterns, as well as supports the development of new products. Many of today's leading
companies, such as Facebook, Google, and Uber, make Machine learning in Education a central
part of their operations. Machine learning in Education has become a significant competitive
differentiator for many companies. Machine learning in Education has several practical
applications that drive the kind of real business results - such as time and money savings - that
have the potential to dramatically impact the future of your organization. In particular, we see
tremendous impact occurring within the customer care industry, whereby Machine learning in
Education is allowing people to get things done more quickly and efficiently. Through Virtual
Assistant solutions, Machine learning in Education automates tasks that would otherwise need to
be performed by a live agent - such as changing a password or checking an account balance. This
frees up valuable agent time that can be used to focus on the kind of customer care that humans
perform best: high touch, complicated decision-making that is not as easily handled by a
machine. At Interactions, we further improve the process by eliminating the decision of whether
a request should be sent to a human or a machine: unique Adaptive Understanding technology,
the machine learns to be aware of its limitations, and bailout to humans when it has low
confidence in providing the correct solution. Durai SK, Shamili MD (2022)

2.0 LITERATURE REVIEW
Machine learning in Education (ML) is a type of artificial intelligence (AI) focused on building
computer systems that learn from data. The broad range of techniques ML encompasses enables
software applications to improve their performance over time. Machine learning in Education
algorithms are trained to find relationships and patterns in data. They use historical data as input
to make predictions, classify information, cluster data points, reduce dimensionality and even
help generate new content, as demonstrated by new ML-fueled applications such as ChatGPT,
Dall-E 2 and GitHub Copilot. Alhnaity B, Pearson S, Leontidis G, Kollias S (2020).
Machine learning in Education is widely applicable across many industries. Recommendation
engines, for example, are used by e-commerce, social media and news organizations to suggest
content based on a customer's past behavior. Machine learning in Education algorithms and
machine vision are a critical component of self-driving cars, helping them navigate the roads
safely. In healthcare, Machine learning in Education is used to diagnose and suggest treatment
plans. Other common ML use cases include fraud detection, spam filtering, malware threat
detection, predictive maintenance and business process automation. Attaran M, Deb P

(2021)
While Machine learning in Education is a powerful tool for solving problems, improving
business operations and automating tasks, it's also a complex and challenging technology,
requiring deep expertise and significant resources. Choosing the right algorithm for a task calls
for a strong grasp of mathematics and statistics. Training Machine learning in Education
algorithms often involves large amounts of good quality data to produce accurate results. The
results themselves can be difficult to understand -- particularly the outcomes produced by
complex algorithms, such as the deep learning neural networks patterned after the human brain.
And ML models can be costly to run and tune. Still, most organizations either directly or
indirectly through ML-infused products are embracing Machine learning in
Education. According to the "2023 AI and Machine learning in Education Research Report"
from Rackspace Technology, 72% of companies surveyed said that AI and Machine learning in
Education are part of their IT and business strategies, and 69% described AI/ML as the most
important technology.
2.1 WHY IS MACHINE LEARNING IN EDUCATION IMPORTANT?

6
Jordan MI, Mitchell TM (2020) Machine learning in Education has played a progressively
central role in human society since its beginnings in the mid-20th century, when AI pioneers like
Walter Pitts, Warren McCulloch, Alan Turing and John von Neumann laid the groundwork for
computation. The training of machines to learn from data and improve over time has enabled
organizations to automate routine tasks that were previously done by humans -- in principle,
freeing us up for more creative and strategic work.
Machine learning in Education also performs manual tasks that are beyond our ability to execute
at scale -- for example, processing the huge quantities of data generated today by digital devices.
Machine learning in Education's ability to extract patterns and insights from vast data sets has
become a competitive differentiator in fields ranging from finance and retail to healthcare and
scientific discovery. Many of today's leading companies, including Facebook, Google and Uber,
make Machine learning in Education a central part of their operations. Ayodele TO (2021)

2.2 WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF MACHINE LEARNING IN

EDUCATION?

Classical Machine learning in Education is often categorized by how an algorithm learns to

become more accurate in its predictions. There are four basic types of Machine learning in
Education: supervised learning, unsupervised learning, semisupervised learning and
reinforcement learning.
The type of algorithm data scientists choose depends on the nature of the data. Many of the
algorithms and techniques aren't limited to just one of the primary ML types listed here. They're
often adapted to multiple types, depending on the problem to be solved and the data set. For
instance, deep learning algorithms such as convolutional neural networks and recurrent neural
networks are used in supervised, unsupervised and reinforcement learning tasks, based on the
specific problem and availability of data. Boogaard FP, Rongen KS, Kootstra GW

(2020).

2.3 ADVANTAGES OF MACHINE LEARNING IN EDUCATION

(Attaran 2018) Machine learning in Education offers several advantages, including:

7
1. Accurate predictions: Machine learning in Education algorithms can analyze vast amounts of
data to make accurate predictions or identify patterns that humans might miss.
2. Speed and efficiency: Machine learning in Education can analyze and process data much
faster than humans, allowing for quick and efficient decision-making.
3. Automation: Machine learning in Education can automate many tasks that would otherwise
require human intervention, saving time and resources.
4. Improved decision-making: By providing insights and predictions based on data analysis,
Machine learning in Education can assist in making more informed and data-driven decisions.
5. Personalization: Machine learning in Education can be used to personalize recommendations
and experiences for individuals based on their unique preferences and behavior.
6. Continuous improvement: Machine learning in Education models can be trained and improved
over time, leading to even more accurate predictions and insights.
7.Scalability: Machine learning in Education algorithms can be scaled to handle large amounts of
data, making them ideal for use in big data applications

2.4 DISADVANTAGES OF MACHINE LEARNING IN EDUCATION

(Khanjode 2020) Nothing is perfect in the world. Machine learning in Education has some
serious limitations, which are bigger than human errors.
1. Data Acquisition
The whole concept of Machine learning in Education is about identifying useful data. The
outcome will be incorrect if a credible data source is not provided. The quality of the data is also
significant. If the user or institution needs more quality data, wait for it. It will cause delays in
providing the output. So, Machine learning in Education significantly depends on the data and its
quality.
2. Time and Resources
The data that machines process remains huge in quantity and differs greatly. Machines require
time so that their algorithm can adjust to the environment and learn it. Trials runs are held to
check the accuracy and reliability of the machine. It requires massive and expensive resources
and high-quality expertise to set up that quality of infrastructure. Trials runs are costly as they
would cost in terms of time and expenses.
3. Results Interpretations

8
One of the biggest advantages of Machine learning in Education is that interpreted data that we
get from the cannot be hundred percent accurate. It will have some degree of inaccuracy. For a
high degree of accuracy, algorithms should be developed so that they give reliable results.

2.5 APPLICATIONS OF MACHINE LEARNING IN EDUCATION.

1. Image and speech recognition: Machine learning in Education algorithms can be trained to
recognize and classify images, sounds, and speech patterns, which is used in various
applications such as facial recognition systems, speech-to-text conversion, and image-based
search engines.
2. Natural language processing (NLP): NLP is a field of study that focuses on the
interactions between computers and humans using natural language. Machine learning in
Education algorithms can be used to analyze and understand human language, which is useful in
chatbots, virtual assistants, and sentiment analysis.
3. Fraud detection: Machine learning in Education algorithms can be used to detect fraudulent
behavior in financial transactions, healthcare insurance claims, and credit card transactions.
4. Recommendation systems: Machine learning in Education algorithms can analyze user data to
make personalized recommendations, such as in e-commerce websites or movie
recommendation
systems.
5. Autonomous vehicles: Machine learning in Education is used in self-driving cars to analyze
sensor data and make decisions in real-time.
2.6 DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MACHINE LEARNING IN EDUCATION SOFTWARE
AND LANGUAGE.
Machine learning in Education software and programming languages serve different purposes,
although they may be used together in certain applications. Machine learning in Education
software refers to programs or tools that are specifically designed to facilitate the process of
developing and deploying Machine learning in Education models. Examples of popular Machine
learning in Education software include TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn, and Keras. These
software packages provide libraries of pre-built algorithms, data manipulation tools, and

9
visualization capabilities that make it easier for developers to train, test, and deploy Machine
learning in Education models. Programming languages, on the other hand, are tools for creating
software applications that can perform a wide variety of tasks, including Machine learning in
Education. Programming languages are used to create the algorithms and models that are
implemented in Machine learning in Education software. Some programming languages, like
Python, R, Java, C++ and many others are particularly popular in the field of Machine learning
in Education due to their extensive libraries of Machine learning in Education algorithms and
their ease of use. Khanjode (2020)

3.0 METHODOLOGY

Machine learning in Education is broadly used in every industry and has a wide range of
applications, especially that involves collecting, analyzing, and responding to large sets of data.
The importance of Machine learning in Education can be understood by these important
applications.

important applications in which Machine learning in Education is widely used are given
below:

1. Healthcare: Machine learning in Education is widely used in the healthcare industry. It

helps healthcare researchers to analyze data points and suggest outcomes. Natural
language processing helped to give accurate insights for better results of patients. Further,
Machine learning in Education has improved the treatment methods by analyzing
external data on patients' conditions in terms of X-ray, Ultrasound, CT-scan, etc. NLP,
medical imaging, and genetic information are key areas of Machine learning in Education
that improve the diagnosis, detection, and prediction system in the healthcare sector.
2. Automation: This is one of the significant applications of Machine learning in Education
that helps to make the system automated. It helps machines to perform repetitive tasks
without human intervention. As a Machine learning in Education engineer and data
scientist, you have the responsibilities to solve any given task multiple times with no
errors. However, this is not practically possible for humans. Hence Machine learning in

10
Education has developed various models to automate the process, having the capability of
performing iterative tasks in lesser time.
3. Banking and Finance: Machine learning in Education is a subset of AI that uses
statistical models to make accurate predictions. In the banking and finance sector,
Machine learning in Education helped in many ways, such as fraud detection, portfolio
management, risk management, chatbots, document analysis, high-frequency trading,
mortgage underwriting, AML detection, anomaly detection, risk credit score detection,
KYC processing, etc. Hence, Machine learning in Education is widely applied in the
banking and finance sector to reduce error as well as time.

4.0 FINDINGS
Nowadays more and more schools, colleges and higher institutions try to adjust to the
technological part of studies. David Greene, a president of Colby College, which is
implementing AI and ML technologies into its curriculum, has shared some of his thoughts about
ML and AI improving the process of education:

5.0 CONCLUSION
Machine learning in Education is directly or indirectly involved in our daily routine. We have
seen various Machine learning in Education applications that are very useful for surviving in this
technical world. Although Machine learning in Education is in the developing phase, it is
continuously evolving rapidly. The best thing about Machine learning in Education is its High-
value predictions that can guide better decisions and smart actions in real-time without human
intervention. Hence, at the end of this article, we can say that the Machine learning in Education
field is very vast, and its importance is not limited to a specific industry or sector; it is applicable
everywhere for analyzing or predicting future events.
