1. It is considered that blood pressure and temperature are very good measures of human
health. Why? (2 marks)

2. What is Sanskritization? Briefly explain how Sanskritization has affected the female to
male ratio (FMR) in India. (4 marks)

3. As a manager in a corporate organization, you proposed the CEO that the organization
must come out with a mechanism to measure employees’ performance. The CEO liked the
idea. You then asked the CEO, “Do you like it to be a set of indicators or an aggregated
index?” The CEO had no clue. Give a brief explanation on these two options highlighting
when to use which option, so that the CEO can take a decision. (3 marks)

4. Consider the following data (Source: UNESCO, 2015; UNICEF, 2015)

In literacy, India is better than Bangladesh. In U-5 mortality, Bangladesh is better than
India. Can you develop a composite index to find which country is doing better, overall?

5. People say, “What gets measured gets managed.” Do you agree? Justify for your answer
(you may like to give example(s)). (3 marks)

6. You are judge of a debate competition. The organizers have asked to judge the candidates
on the basis of two parameters content and elocution – both having 50 marks. There are
three candidates. You can assume any scores of these three candidates and show how when
you change the method of aggregation (linear average, geometric mean, or displaced ideal)
the ranking changes. (5 marks)

7. Do you agree to Easterly’ argument that Millennium Development Goals are arbitrary
and are also unfair to Africa? Give reasons for your answer. (3 marks)

8. In the conventional poverty measures, the rich countries are hiding the poverty of their
poor. Justify with an example. (5 marks)

9. Assuming that you are given the task of designing sustainability indicators for dairy
cooperatives (SIDC) by the Verghese Kurien Centre of Excellence (VKCoE), IRMA. The
terms of reference of the task included that the development of SIDC indicators should be a
process in which all the stakeholders of the dairy sector would like to participate as much
as possible. It was also specified that VKCoE would like to have the SIDC indicators to
monitor dairy cooperatives in Gujarat. In the above backdrop answer the following -

a) What steps you would follow in the indicator development and how you would ensure
reasonable participation of stakeholders from dairy sector. (3 marks)

b) Suppose you decide to consider three popular dimensions of sustainability—economic,


social, and environmental. For each dimension give examples of two indicators which
might get listed among SIDC. (3 marks)

10. Once Mahbub ul Haq stated in the context of GDP/GNP that a measure that values gun
several hundred times more than a bottle of milk is bound to raise serious questions about
its relevance. Do you agree to this? Give reasons for your answer. (3 marks)
