PA 2nd Assignment

i. The document discusses the merits and demerits of three measures of central tendency: arithmetic mean, mode, and median. ii. For arithmetic mean, merits include ease of calculation, representation of all data equally, and suitability for algebraic treatment. Demerits include sensitivity to outliers and inability to represent qualitative data. iii. For mode, merits include simplicity and representation of most frequent values. Demerits include uncertainty with multiple or no modes and inability for algebraic treatment. iv. For median, merits include insensitivity to outliers and certainty. Demerits include lack of representative character for some distributions and inability for algebraic treatment.

MERITS & DEMARITS OF ARITHMETIC MEAN

ARITHMETIC MEAN :
The arithmetic mean of a N values of the
variable X i.e X1 , X2 , X3 , …………..Xn , then the mean of these N
values is defined as the sum of all values devided by there numbers .

MERITS OF ARITHMETIC MEAN :

i. It can be easily calculated ; and can be easily understand . It
is the reason that it is the mostused measure of central
tendency .
ii. As every item is taken in calculation , it is effected by every
item .
iii. As the mathematical formula is rigid one , therefore the result
remains the same .
iv. Fluctuation are minimum for this measure of central
tendency when repeated samples are taken from one and the
same population .
v. It can further be subjected to algebraic treatment unlike other
measures i.e , Mode and Median .
vi. Arithmetic Mean has also a plus point being a calculated
quantity and is not based on position of terms in series .
vii. As it is rigidly defined , it is mostly used for comparing the
various issues .

DEMARITS OF ARITHMETIC MEAN :

i. It can be located graphically .
ii. A single item can bring big change in the result .
iii. Its value will be effective only if the frequency is normally
distributed . Otherwise in case skewness is more , the result
become ineffective .
iv. Qualitative forms such as CLEVERNESS , RICHES etc ,
cannot give X as data cannot be expressed numerically .
v. X cannot be located by inspection as in the case of mode and
median .

MERITS AND DEMERITS OF MODE :

MODE :
The most repeated value are called mode .
MERITS OF MODE :
i. Simple and popular : Mode is very simple measure of central
tendency . Sometimes , just as the series is enough to located the
model value . Bcz of its simplicity it is a popular measure of
central tendency .
ii. Less effect of marginal value : Compared top mean mode is less
effected by marginal value in the series . Mode is determined only
by the value with high frequencies .
iii. Graphic presentation : Mode can be located graphically with the
help od histogram .
iv. Best representation : Mode is that value which occure most
frequently in the series . Accordingly mode is the best
representation value of the series .
v. No need of knowing all the items of frequency : The calculation of
mode does not required knowledge of all the items and frequencies
of a distribution .

DEMARITS OF MODE :
i. Uncertain and vague : Mode is an uncertain and vague
measure of the central tendency .
ii. Not capable of algebraic treatment : Unlike mean , mode is
not capable of further algebraic treatment .
iii. Difficult : With frequencies of all items are identical it is
difficult to identify the modal value .
iv. Complex procedure of grouping : Calculation of mode
involves procedure of grouping od data . If the etend of
grouping changes there will be change will be change in the
modal value .
v. Ignore extreme marginal frequency: It ignores extreme
marginal frequency . To that extend model value is nnot a
representativ value of all the items in a series .

THE MEDIAN :
A median is defined as a value which devides as
arranged data into two equal parts .
MERITS OF MEDIAN :
i. SIMPLICITY : It is very simple value of central tendency .
The case of simple statistical seris just a galance att the
data is enough to located the median value .
ii. Free from the effect of extreme values : Unlike arithmetic
mean median value is not destroyed by the extreme value
of the series .
iii. CERTAINTY : Certainty is another merits in the median .
Median values are always a certain specific value in
series .
iv. REAL VALUE : Median value is the real value and is a
better representative value of the series compare to A.M
average .
v. GRAPHIC PRESENTATION : Beside graphic approach
the median value can be estimated also through the graphic
presentation of data .
DEMARITS OF MEDIAN :
i. Lack of representative character : Median fails to be a
representative measure in case of such series in the
different value of which are weid a part from each other .
ii. UNREALISTIC : When the median is located somewhere
between the two middle value , it remains only an
approximate measure not a precise value .
iii. Lack of algebraic treatment : Arithmetic mean is capable
of further alegbric treatment , bur median is not . For
example multiplying the median with the number of item
in the series will not given us the sum total of a value of
series .
