About Kankanaey Tribe, Culture, Location
The Kankanaey tribe are an Indigenous people of the Northern Philippines. They are part of the
collective group of indigenous people known as the Igorot people. The Kankanaey tribes live in
Mountain Province, northern Benguet.
The kankanaey tribes that are also known as igorot people are one of the hardworking tribes in the field
of agriculture. Like most ethnic groups, the Kankanaey also built sloping terraces which is (Rice
terracess) binuo nila yun to maximize farm space in the rugged terrain of the Cordillera Administrative
Region that benefit and became sufficient sources of staple foods like camote, rice, patatas, and other
root crops such as tugi and gabi.
Also ang kankanaey ay into mining particularly gold, since the kankanaey territory yields lots of minerals.
The Kankanaey have their own language called Mankayan, which is closely related to the language of
Ifugao and the bontok.
Also, Bakun-Kibungan, Guinzadan, Kapangan, Mankayan, and Buguias are classified as dialects of the
Kankanaey language. So sa kankaney meron silang ginagamit pa na iba pang dialects for their
before, during and after the ceremony.
butchering of animals.
Hunting is also practiced by the people with the use of spears and dogs, while fishing is done with the
use of bamboo traps.
Next is the best weavers in the Benguet is the women. Example ng mga ginagawa nila, blanket, basktet,
shirts, and etc.
kankanaey tribe.
The Kankanaey differ in the way they dress. They have two types of dress
The soft-speaking Kankanaey women's dress with a color combination of black, white and red. The
design of the upper attire is a criss-crossed style of black, white and red colors. The skirt or tapis is a
combination of stripes of black, white and red.
The hard-speaking Kankanaey women's dress is composed of mainly red and black with a little white
styles, as for the skirt or tapis which is mostly called bakget and gateng[clarification needed].
puti kumpara sas soft speaking kankanaey women’s dress.
The men wore a G-string as it is called but it is known as wanes to the Kankanaeys of Besao and Sagada.
The design of the wanes may vary according to social status or municipality.
