 Prime Number: A prime number is a whole number greater than 1 whose only factors are 1 and itself. A factor is a whole
number that can be divided evenly into another number. The first few prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, 23 and 29.
Numbers that have more than two factors are called composite numbers. The number 1 is neither prime nor composite
 What are Integers?
The word integer originated from the Latin word “Integer” which means whole or intact. Integers is a special set of numbers
comprising zero, positive numbers and negative numbers.
Examples of Integers: – 1, -12, 6, 15.
 Symbol
The integers are represented by the symbol ‘Z’.
Z= {……-8,-7,-6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8,……}
 Types of Integers: Integers come in three types:
o Zero: Zero is neither a positive nor a negative integer. It is a neutral number i.e. zero has no sign (+ or -).
o Positive Integers: The positive integers are the natural numbers or also called counting numbers. These integers are also
sometimes denoted by Z+. The positive integers lie on the right side of 0 on a number line. Z+ → 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30,….
o Negative Integers: The negative integers are the negative of natural numbers. They are denoted by Z–. The negative
integers lie on the left side of 0 on a number line. Z– → -1, -2, -3, -4, -5, -6, -7, -8, -9, -10, -11, -12, -13, -14, -15, -16, -17, -
18, -19, -20, -21, -22, -23, -24, -25, -26, -27, -28, -29, -30,…..
 Fraction: The term ‘fraction’ represents a numerical quantity part of a whole object. We can understand fractions with an
example. Suppose we have a large cake and we cut the cake into 8 equal slices. Then each portion of the slice is only 1/8th of
the total quantity of cake. Here, 1/8 is a fraction.
 Numerator: The top half of a fraction that represents the number of parts you have. In the above example, 5 is the numerator.
 Denominator: The bottom half of a fraction that represents the number into which the whole object is divided. In the above
example, 8 is the denominator.
 1. Proper Fractions: Proper Fraction Definition: When Numerator<Denominator, i.e. when the numerator of a fraction is
less than the denominator, the fraction is called a proper fraction. Have a look at the proper fraction example below.
 2. Improper Fractions: Improper Fraction Definition: When Numerator > Denominator, i.e. when the numerator is greater
than the denominator, the fraction is called an improper fraction.
 3. Mixed Fractions: Mixed Fraction Definition: A fraction comprising a natural number and a fraction is called a mixed
fraction.
 4. Like Fractions: Fractions that have the same denominators are like fractions. For example, the fractions 2/7, 3/7, 5/7, and
6/7 all have the same denominator – 7. Hence, these are like fractions. (2/7) + (3/7) + (5/7) + (6/7) = (2 + 3 + 5 + 6)/7 = 16/7.
 5. Unlike Fractions: Fractions that have different denominators are unlike fractions. For example, the fractions 2/3
and 1/4 have different denominators. So, they are unlike fractions.
 Calculate the LCM of the two denominators 3 and 4.
o LCM of 3 & 4 = 12. This LCM will be the denominator of both the fractions.
o Calculate the equivalent value of the first fraction (2/3). To do this, divide the LCM calculated in the previous step (12) by
the denominator of the first fraction (3). So, 12 ÷ 3 = 4. Now, multiply 4 by the numerator (2), which gives 8. Therefore,
the first fraction becomes 8/12.
o Likewise, calculate the equivalent value of the second fraction (1/4). To do this, divide the LCM calculated in the first step
(12) by the second fraction’s denominator (4). So, 12 ÷ 4 = 3. Now, multiply 3 by the numerator (1), which gives 3.
Therefore, the second fraction becomes 3/12. Now, both the fractions have the same numerator, i.e. 12.
o Now, add the two like fractions in a similar manner as shown in the previous section. So, (8/12) + (3/12) = (8 + 3)/12 =
11/12. So, (2/3) + (1/4) = 11/12.

 6. Equivalent Fractions: Fractions that give the same value are called equivalent fractions upon simplification. Have a look
at the Equivalent fraction example -1/2 and 50/100 are equal to 0.5. Hence, these are equivalent fractions.
 7. Unit Fractions: A fraction whose numerator is one and the denominator is a positive integer is called a unit fraction.
Examples of unit fractions are 1/2. 1.5, 2/8, etc.

Divisibility
 Number divisible by 2: Single local digit will be 0 or even number. For example, 544 is divisible by 2; Because the single
local digit is 2 (even number). 545, indivisible by 2; Because the single local digit is 5 (odd number).
 Number divisible by 4: A number formed by two digits in single and decimal places is divisible by 4. Again both unit and
decade If the place digit is 0 then the given number is divisible by 4. For example, 544 is divisible by 4; Because 44 is
divisible by 4. 545, indivisible by 4; Because 45 is indivisible by 4
 Number divisible by 8: If the number formed by the last three digits of the number is divisible by 8 then the number is
divisible by 8. For example- 20104, divisible by 8; Because, the number formed by the last three digits of the number (104) is
divisible by 8. 20105, indivisible by 8; Because the number formed by the last three digits of the number (105), is not
divisible by 8.
 Number divisible by 5: The single local digit of the number will be 0 or 5. For example, 320 is divisible by 5; Because the
single local digit is 0. 319, 5 doors are indivisible; Because the single local digit is 9.
 Number divisible by 25: The number is divisible by 25 if the last two digits of the number are divisible by 25 or if the last
two digits are 00. For example, 98775 is divisible by 25; Because the number formed by the last two digits of the number (75)
is divisible by 25. 31964, indivisible by 25; Because the number formed by the last two digits of the number (65) is 25-fold
indivisible.
 Number divisible by 3: The sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 3. For example, 318 is divisible by 3; Because
3+1+8=12, which is div
 isible by 3. 319, is not divisible by 3 because 3+1+9=13, which is not divisible by 3.
 Number divisible by 9: The sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 9. 288 is divisible by 9 because 2+8+8=18 which
is divisible by 9. 289, is not divisible by 9 because 2+8+9=19 which is not divisible by 9.
 Number divisible by 6: Sum of the digits of the number is divisible by 3 and if the number is even then it is divisible by 6.
For example: 288 is divisible by 6; Because 2+8+8=18 which is divisible by 3 and is an even number. 289, indivisible by 6;
Because 2+8+9= 19, which is not divisible by 3 and is an odd number
 Number divisible by 11: A number is divisible by 11 if the sum of the odd local digits of the number and the difference of
the even local digits is zero. For example, 4653 is divisible by 11; Because sum of odd local digits = 6+3 =9 Sum of even
local digits =5+4 =9 Difference =0 4654, indivisible by 11; Because sum of odd local digits = 6 + 4 = 10 sum of even local
digits = 5 + 4 = 9 , difference = 1
