Flexibility in Learning

Flexible learning is a method that gives students freedom in how, what, when and where they learn. It allows customization of pace, place and mode of learning. Examples of flexible learning include modular distance learning using self-learning modules, online distance learning using video communication, TV/radio based learning using multimedia materials, blended learning combining face-to-face and online learning, and homeschooling where parents facilitate their children's education. Flexible learning allows students to learn at their own pace and tailor their education in a way that helps them better retain information and achieve better results.

FLEXIBILITY IN LEARNING

JOHN JOSEPH BAÑEZ

SOCIAL STUDIES 3-A
FLEXIBLE LEARNING

• Flexible learning is a method of learning where students are given

freedom in how, what, when and where they learn. Flexible learning
environments address how physical space is used, how students are
grouped during learning and how time is used throughout teaching.
• Flexible learning refers to the ability to customize one’s pace,
place and mode of learning. With pace, for example, students
may take accelerated programs or engage in part-time learning
to ensure they have time to work on the side. Learning can
take place in a variety of settings, including in the classroom,
at home via the Internet, while commuting or as part of a
work-study program. Mode refers to the way that content is
delivered by technology, typically through blended learning,
fully online courses or technology-enhanced experiences.

EXAMPLE OF FLEXIBLE LEARNING

• 1. Modular Distance Learning

• In this mode, students are given the option to use self-
learning modules (SLMs) in physical form which could be
delivered by school personnel to their stakeholders’
homes.
• This allows those without ready access to the Internet to
continue learning even without having to go to school.

• 2. Online Distance Learning
• In online distance learning, teachers will be
responsible for facilitating synchronous
sessions to students with a stable Internet
connection through the use of video
communication channels.
• 3. TV/Radio Based Learning
• This deals with the use of SLMs which are transformed
into multimedia materials which could be transmitted
over the television and radio networks.
• The advantage of this mode is that it is more accessible
to those who already have the basic entertainment
appliances at home, while schools may also provide CDs,
USBs and DVDs to serve additional learning materials.
• 4. Blended Learning
• The word “blended” is already a give-away when
defining this learning mode. Here, a combination of
face-to-face and online distance learning is being
implemented, where most of the learning activities
may be done by students using online platforms,
while class discussions may be held during periodic
physical interactions in school.
• 5. Homeschooling
• As an alternative to regular schooling, the
practice of parents serving as educational
facilitators to their children is seen to have
been widely accepted over the recent years.

• Flexible learning allows the student to decipher when
and how they will learn by tailoring their course to
their own capabilities. This ultimately leads to them
retaining information and producing better results.
They also have the advantage of learning at their
own pace which can help to alleviate a lot of
pressure.
