Q2 - PPT 7

This document provides an example of how to graph systems of linear inequalities in two variables. It shows graphing the individual inequalities x + 3y > 6 and y < 2x - 1, and identifying their solution sets. The solution set to the system is the region where the graphs overlap, containing any ordered pair (x,y) that satisfies both inequalities. It also outlines the steps to graph any system of linear inequalities: 1) graph each inequality individually, shading one side, and 2) combine the graphs and the solution is the overlapping region.

Systems of
Inequalities
Systems of Linear Inequalities in two Variables
contains two or more linear inequalities.
A solution to a system of linear inequalities is any
ordered pair (x,y) that makes both the inequality
statements true.
Book page 167.
To identify all the possible solutions of the
system, the inequalities must be graphed on the
same Cartesian Plan. The region where the
graphs overlap contains all the points that satisfy
the system.
Example Graph the solution set for the
system of inequalities.
𝑥 + 3𝑦 > 6

𝑦 < 2𝑥 − 1

Solution:
Graph the boundary line and the
shaded side of each inequalities.
𝑥 + 3𝑦 > 6
Graph the boundary line 𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6.
x-intercept y-intercept
Let 𝑦 = 0 Let x = 0
𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6 𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 6
𝑥+0=6 0 + 3𝑦 = 6
𝑥=6 3𝑦 6

(6,0) 3 3
𝑦=2
(0,2) ●

Since the inequality symbol is >, the

points on the boundary line is not a
solution. So, use dashed line.
Test the origin

Point: (0, 0)
𝑥 + 3𝑦 > 6
0 + 3(0) > 6
0>6
(0, 0) is not a solution.
𝑦 < 2𝑥 − 1
Graph the boundary line 𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 1.
x-intercept y-intercept
Let 𝑦 = 0 Let x = 0
𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 1 𝑦 = 2𝑥 − 1
0 = 2𝑥 − 1 𝑦=2 0 −1
1 = 2𝑥 𝑦 = −1

Since the inequality symbol is <, the
points on the boundary line is not a
solution. So, use dashed line.
Test the origin

Point: (0, 0)
𝑦 < 2𝑥 − 1
0 < 2(0) − 1
0 < −1
(0, 0) is not a solution.
Combine the two graph.

The solution set are those ordered

pairs in the 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒍𝒂𝒑𝒑𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒓𝒆𝒈𝒊𝒐𝒏.

Try to solve
Graph the solution set for the system of
inequalities.
𝑥+𝑦 >4

𝑥−𝑦 <6
Steps in graphing systems of Linear Inequalities
1. Graph each inequality. Shade the shaded side of the
graph.
2. Combine the graph of the two inequalities and the
solutions of the two graphs are the ordered pairs
overlapping in the region.
𝑥+𝑦 >4

𝑥−𝑦 <6

Combine the two graphs
