INTRODUCTION

PROJECT 2:
DESIGNING FOR
SOME SOCIAL GOOD

Dr. Will Kurlinkus

MIDTERM PORTFOLIO

Make sure your elements lead to your Figma design. If you trace specific needs and users
throughout the project and these are not solved by your Figma design, that's a problem.

• What I expect of your final portfolio (you may
revise 4 elements for new grades—mark these
with an asterisk in your table of contents)

“deliverables reading”)

main project headings from
empathize to test.

all in the same Canva design format
or each major section in that format.
6. Chapter cover sheets for each major

7. 1-3 sentences for each required piece
that needs an explanation the what

PROJECT 2: CHOOSE A • This should be a local problem & it should be
PROBLEM & DESIGN addressable in part by you
• You will be interviewing, surveying, gathering data
SOLUTION THAT WILL from and testing with local users

BET TER THE WORLD • This project will involve you running through many
of the same stages and activities we’ve already
done but FOR REAL this time
• You can design another app if you’d like or you can
create anything else you’d like—but you have to
have the skill to create a testable prototype by right
after thanksgiving break.
• Examples:
• I want to design a lesson plan customized for
x elementary school to address ban books
• I want to address z problem on campus
• I plan on doing X as my future career so I
want to design Y thing that demonstrates my
skill and solves a problem
• I really care about x cause
• I want to work with Y community

STATEMENT OF The statement of need specifies the
conditions you wish to change. It
NEED: SHOW ME should quickly summarize the

THE PROBLEM problem, show your familiarity with

prior work on the problem
(research/other solutions),
reinforce your credibility for
investigating the problem, and,
generally, justify why this problem
should be investigated here, now,
and by you.

WHAT THE STATEMENT OF NEED
INVOLVES
1. Show me this is actually a problem and why it’s worth solving. Establish the importance and significance of the problem.
2. Demonstrate a precise understanding of the problem or need that you are attempting to solve. [specific context, specific
stories, specific stakeholders, specific institutions, specific statistics]
3. Has someone else attempted to solve this problem (the answer is always yes)? How does your problem differ? And why
does it still need solving? (They Say/I Say). Show me that you’ve researched: use statistics, quotes, other solutions, etc.
4. Clearly convey the focus of your project early in the narrative (you need to solve something very specific). Hint at your
solution by focusing your problem.
5. Indicate the relationship of your project to a larger set of problems or issues and justify your scope. Why has your
particular focus has been chosen and not another?
6. Justify why your problem should be of special interest to the sponsor. Why does it matter to the granting institution and
their focus? What are the benefits to the sponsor if it’s solved? To the world?
7. Demonstrate that your problem is feasible to solve.
8. Make the reviewer want to read further.
