STEM - PC11T IIa 1

This lesson plan aims to teach 11th grade mathematics students about trigonometry through understanding the unit circle. The objectives are for 75% of students to illustrate the unit circle, understand the relationship between linear and angular measures of central angles, and cite examples of circles in real life. Activities include a motivation game on circles, thinking in pairs about the unit circle, and group work analyzing relationships in activity sheets. Evaluation will have student groups demonstrate their understanding through a verbal, kinesthetic, rhythmic, or visual presentation.

LESSON PLAN

SHS – STEM
Grade 11 Mathematics

Content: TRIGONOMETRY

Content Standard:
The students demonstrate understanding of the key concepts of circular functions,
trigonometric identities, inverse trigonometric functions, and polar coordinate system.

Performance Standard:
The students shall be able to formulate and solve accurately situational problems involving
circular functions.

Competency:
Illustrate the unit circle and the relationship between the linear and angular measures of a
central angle in a unit circle (STEM_PC11T-IIa-1).

I OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, 75% of the students are expected to:
a. Illustrate the unit circle;
b. the relationship between the linear and angular measures of a central angle in a unit;
and
c. Cite examples and appreciate the roles of circle in real-life situations.

II SUBJECT MATTER

Topic: Unit Circle

Trigonometry, pp.
Materials Projector, Activity Sheets, paper, marking pens, manila paper

III PROCEDURES
A. Preliminaries
 Prayer
 Checking of Attendance
 Setting the mood
 Motivation

Game: 4 PICS, 1 WORD

The class will be divided into four (4) groups. The groups will be asked to analyze the
pictures flashed on the screen and find common thing about them. Letters will be flashed as
well to help them unlock the correct word. Each group will be given 20 seconds to study the
pictures and write their final answer in a sheet of paper. Each correct answer is worth five
(5) points. The group with the highest score after for rounds will be declared winner.

The correct answers are CENTER, RADIUS, CIRCLE and DEGREE.

Ask the students if they have any idea of the topic for the day.
B. Lesson Proper

ACTIVITIES

THINK – PAIR – SHARE

Ask the students to illustrate a unit circle in a piece of paper. Let them share their
idea/s about it with a partner. Allow them to discuss for 2 minutes.
Ask few student to illustrate on the board what a unit circle is and let them explain
their idea to the whole class.
The teacher then processes what a unit circle is.

GROUP WORK
With the same groupings, let the students study the activity sheet provided
regarding the relationship between the linear measure and angle measure of central
angle of unit circle and answer the questions that follow.
Ask them to write their answer on a manila paper which will be provided. Allow a
student from each group to communicate their work in front of the whole class.

ANALYSIS

Uses the guide questions provided in the activity sheets. The teacher supplies other
important concepts of the topic which were not mentioned by the students for
emphasis.

ABSTRACTION

1. What is a unit circle?

2. What is the relationship between the linear measure and angular measure of
central angle of unit circle?

APPLICATION

How can we apply the concepts of circles in real-life situation? Ask the students to
cite some concrete examples.

IV EVALUATION (Differentiated Instruction)

Utilizing the same groups, ask the student to perform their understanding about a
unit circle and the relationship between the linear and angular measure of central angle of
unit circle. A rubric for group performance will be communicated to the students on how
they will get a favorable score. The groups will pick among the following: VERBAL (Recite a
poem), KINESTHETIC (Role Playing), RHYTHMICAL (Musical Presentation), and VISUAL
(Illustrations/Graphical Representation).

V AGREEMENT
1 – 4 – 3 CHART
Ask the students to answer the given chart.
1 – Thing you like most about the topic
4 – Things you’ve learned about the topic
3 – Things you’d like to know more
