CHPT 2 - Math

The document provides information about different methods of representing data taught in a Class 4 mathematics class, including tally counting, pictographs, bar graphs, and pie charts. It gives examples of each method using sample data like numbers of students scoring 100 in different classes or apples sold each day. Students are assigned classwork involving tally charts, pictographs, and bar graphs to solve word problems and questions related to the sample data. The key methods of displaying data - tally counting, pictographs, and bar graphs - are explained in detail over four class sessions.

Class IV
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: Data Handling
Taught and explained in the class
________________________________________________________________________________________

Day 1:
Data and different methods of representing data.
Definition of Data: A collection of information, such as numbers, words, measurements, observations or even
just description of things is known as data.

Different methods of representing data

A variety of methods have been developed to represent numerical data such as, pictographs, tally counting, bar
graphs and pie charts (circle graphs).

✓ Tally Counting: It is a way of keeping count by drawing marks. Every fifth mark is drawn across the
previous 4 marks, so you can easily see groups of 5 at a glance.

✓ Pictograph: Representation of data using picture symbols is called pictograph.

10
0

✓ Bar graph: A pictorial representation of the numerical data by number of bars of uniform width erected
horizontally or vertically with equal spacing between them is known as bar graph.
Tally Chart

One way of presenting data in an organized way is by drawing a tally chart.

Explanation of Tally marks

o A tally mark looks like this I. Tally marks are an easy way to count things. Each tally mark stands for
1.
o If you have (three tally marks) then the final count is the number 3.
o If you have four tally marks then the number will be four, IIII= 4
o Now, if you have four tally marks along with another one crossing tally line, then four tallies
and one crossing line makes the number 5. For example, =5

o If you have seven tally marks like, then the final count is the number 7.

Classwork: (TO BE DONE IN THE EXERCISE BOOK)

1. Write the tally mark for the following.
1) 7 2) 14 3) 19 4) 20 5) 26

2. The following tally chart shows the number of laptops sold in different years. Complete the tally chart and
answer the following questions. (TO BE DONE IN THE EXERCISE BOOK)

Years Number of laptop sold in tally marks Number

2019 IIII ___
2020 ___
2021 IIII ___
2022 ___

1. In which year the maximum number of laptops have been sold?

2. How many laptops were sold in the year 2020?
3. In which year the least number of laptops have been sold?
4. What is the total number of laptops sold in the year 2021 and 2022?
Day 2

Pictograph
Pictographs use pictures or symbols to represent information.
• It has a title
• It gives definition of the symbol or key.
• Pictographs help us to understand the information by allowing us to compare the data shown.

Number of students who scored 100 marks in Science.

Class 5

= 10

This is known as a pictograph.

Use the pictograph to answer the following questions.
1) In which class is the number of students secured 100 in Science the highest?
Ans : Class 4
2) In which class is the number of students secured 100 in Science the least?
Ans: Class 3
3) How many more students of Class 4 secured 100 than students of class 2?
Ans: Twenty more students.
4) In which two classes are the number of students secured 100 in Science the same?
Ans: Class 2 and Class 5

Class work: (To be done in exercise book)

1. Study the pictograph and answer the following questions:

Day Numbers of apples sold in a day Total number of

apples
Monday ________

Tuesday ________
Wednesday ________

Thursday ________

Friday ________

Key : 2 apples sold

The Pictograph above shows the number of apples sold in a week by a fruit seller.

Q1. How many apples were sold on Monday?

Q2. How many apples did the fruit seller sell in five days?
Q3. Which day he sold the least number of apples?
Q4. On which day the maximum number of apples was sold?
Q5. How many more apples were sold on Friday than Tuesday?

Class work: pg 216 question and answer based on pictograph (Textbook)

Day 4:

Bar Graph
Bar graph is the simplest form of representing data by displaying rectangular bars of different heights
proportional to the value they represent. Bar graph can also be referred as bar chart, column graph, and column
chart.
A bar graph breaks categorical data down by group, and represents these amounts by using bars of different
lengths. It uses either the number of individuals in each group (also called the frequency) or the percentage in
each group (called the relative frequency).

The bars can be plotted vertically or horizontally. Bar graph makes comparison easier. The title of the bar graph
tells what the graph is about and bars of different height tell the facts or information. Each bar represents a
quantity for a particular group. If the bars are drawn vertically on horizontal lines then they are called as
vertical bar graphs. If the bars are drawn horizontally upon Y axis then they are known as horizontal bar
graphs
Illustration of different types of Bar graphs
There are two types of graphs used to display data:

• Horizontal bar graphs

The following Horizontal bar graph shows the number of days it snowed in the following month in
Srinagar.
The following Vertical bar graph shows various brands of Television sold by a shop in the months of January.
• Vertical bar graphs

Interpretation of Vertical Bar Graph

Example 1 : Miss Sarah, a teacher of Edwards Elementary School, recorded the favourite subjects of her
students in a bar graph. Use the bar graph to answer the questions:

Study the bar graph an answer the questions given below.

1) Which subjects have the same number of votes?

Answer: Social Science and Science

2) Which subject is most popular?

Answer: Math

3) Which subject is less popular, Science or Math?

Answer: Science

4) Which subject is favourite for 50 students?

Answer: Math
