Day 1:
Data and different methods of representing data.
Definition of Data: A collection of information, such as numbers, words, measurements, observations or even
just description of things is known as data.
A variety of methods have been developed to represent numerical data such as, pictographs, tally counting, bar
graphs and pie charts (circle graphs).
✓ Tally Counting: It is a way of keeping count by drawing marks. Every fifth mark is drawn across the
previous 4 marks, so you can easily see groups of 5 at a glance.

✓ Bar graph: A pictorial representation of the numerical data by number of bars of uniform width erected
horizontally or vertically with equal spacing between them is known as bar graph.
Tally Chart
o A tally mark looks like this I. Tally marks are an easy way to count things. Each tally mark stands for
1.
o If you have (three tally marks) then the final count is the number 3.
o If you have four tally marks then the number will be four, IIII= 4
o Now, if you have four tally marks along with another one crossing tally line, then four tallies
and one crossing line makes the number 5. For example, =5
o If you have seven tally marks like, then the final count is the number 7.
2. The following tally chart shows the number of laptops sold in different years. Complete the tally chart and
answer the following questions. (TO BE DONE IN THE EXERCISE BOOK)
Pictograph
Pictographs use pictures or symbols to represent information.
• It has a title
• It gives definition of the symbol or key.
• Pictographs help us to understand the information by allowing us to compare the data shown.

Day 4:
Bar Graph
Bar graph is the simplest form of representing data by displaying rectangular bars of different heights
proportional to the value they represent. Bar graph can also be referred as bar chart, column graph, and column
chart.
A bar graph breaks categorical data down by group, and represents these amounts by using bars of different
lengths. It uses either the number of individuals in each group (also called the frequency) or the percentage in
each group (called the relative frequency).
The bars can be plotted vertically or horizontally. Bar graph makes comparison easier. The title of the bar graph
tells what the graph is about and bars of different height tell the facts or information. Each bar represents a
quantity for a particular group. If the bars are drawn vertically on horizontal lines then they are called as
vertical bar graphs. If the bars are drawn horizontally upon Y axis then they are known as horizontal bar
graphs
Illustration of different types of Bar graphs
There are two types of graphs used to display data:
Example 1 : Miss Sarah, a teacher of Edwards Elementary School, recorded the favourite subjects of her
students in a bar graph. Use the bar graph to answer the questions:
WORKSHEET
e) Find the number of children who have pet as dogs and cats?
Ans: ________________________________________________________________________________
2.The bar graph shows the favourite sports of a group of students.
e) Name all the favourite sports of students shown in the bar graph?
Ans: ________________________________________________________________________________
A group of students at Parkside Elementary school made a bar graph to show how they get to school.
