Open Source • The main objective of OSS is to reduce the total cost of software
ownership.

Software • OSS allows anyone to make a new version of the software, port it to
new operating systems and processor architectures, or share it with
other users.

licensing fee for Ubuntu, and you can download, use, and share the operating
system free of charge.
• It is free, providing businesses and every computer user the ability to download
software and to access it at will without having to pay any license fee.
• It includes many of the programs used for everyday computing at no cost, unlike
Windows and macOS.

Some examples of application software


• Office Suite: a full office suite with a word processor, spreadsheet, and
presentation software. Examples are Apache OpenLibreOffice and LibreOffice.
• Desktop Client e-mail: Evolution, an e-mail program with a similar interface to
Microsoft Outlook. Another example is Mozilla Thunderbird.
• Web Browser: Examples are Mozilla Firefox, Opera, and Flock.
• Database: The two best-known open-source database programs on Linux are
PostgreSQL and MySQL. There are also tools like Glom that provide an easy-to-
use graphical interface for designing and editing databases.
