1) If the distance between the light source and photocathode is doubled, the stopping potential applied to the photocell must be increased. 2) An electron accelerated through a 100V potential difference will have a de Broglie wavelength associated with it. 3) Einstein's photoelectric equation explains three key observations of the photoelectric effect: photons eject electrons, the kinetic energy of ejected electrons depends on photon frequency not intensity, and there is a threshold frequency.

1. If the distance between the source of light and the cathode of a photo cell is doubled, how
does it affect the stopping potential applied to the photo cell? 1
2. An electron is accelerated through a potential difference of 100 volts. What is the de-Broglie
wavelength associated with it. 2
3. Write Einstein’s photoelectric equation. State clearly the three salient features observed in
photoelectric effect, which can be explained on the basis of the above equation. 2
4. Electrons are emitted from the cathode of a photocell of negligible work function, when
photons of wavelength are incident on it. Derive the expression for the de Broglie 2
wavelength of the electrons emitted in terms of the wavelength of the incident light.
5. When a certain photosensitive surface is illuminated with monochromatic light of frequency
f, the stopping potential for the photocurrent is (-V0/2). When the surface is illuminated by
monochromatic light of frequency f/2, the stopping potential is –V0. Then find threshold
frequency for photoelectric emission. 3
6. According to Einstein’s photoelectric equation, the plot of the kinetic energy of the emitted
photoelectrons from a metal vs the frequency of the incident radiation gives a straight line
whose slope
(a) depends on the nature of the metal used
(b) depends on the intensity of the radiation 1
(c) depends both on the intensity of the radiation and the metal used
(d) is the same for all metals and independent of the intensity of the radiation.
7. In a photoelectric effect experiment the threshold wavelength of light is 380 nm. If the
wavelength of incident light is 260 nm, the maximum kinetic energy of emitted electrons will
be given E (in eV) 3
8. The frequency of the incident light falling on a photosensitive metal plate is
doubled,stopping potential will be
(a) Double the earlier value .
(b) Unchanged.
(c) Less than doubled.
(d) More than doubled. 1
9. In the study of a photoelectric effect the graph between the stopping potential V and
frequency f of the incident radiation on two different metals P and Q is shown below:
(i) Which one of the two metals has higher threshold frequency?
(ii) Determine the work function of the metal which has greater value. 3
(iii) Find the maximum kinetic energy of electron emitted by light of frequency
8×1014 Hz for this metal.
