What are Netflix secret codes?

With thousands of films stuffed into generic genre categories like ‘Drama’,
‘Horror’, and ‘Children’. You could be sitting there for hours trying to find a film
you like.

Luckily, Netflix has more than 70,000 extremely precise sub-genres that can be
identified by a specific number code – 2535 for ‘Witty movies directed by
Woody Allen’, for example.

Other secret categories include ‘Heartfelt Tearjerkers’, ‘Campy Zombie Movies’,

‘Film Noir’, ‘Mind-Bending Fantasy Movies', ‘Quirky Independent Movies Based
on Books’, and even ‘Scary Italian Crime Movies from the 1970s’. Here’s a full list

How to use Netflix codes?

The Netflix codes only work on the browser version of Netflix, since you have to
modify the website URL to access the hidden categories. Here’s how to access
the secret menu:

1. Start by logging into Netflix on your browser. You’ll notice that the URL which
opens a specific category, like ‘Thriller’ for instance, appears in the following
format:

https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/thriller

2. Now you’ll need to modify the URL slightly, by replacing the genre with any
of the codes from the list. For example, the code for the Film Noir category is
7687, so you need to erase ‘thriller’ and type 7687, to bring up the ‘Film Noir’
category:

Sticking around for the nerdy part? We’ve got you covered. Netflix codes are
created with a combination of human intelligence and machine intelligence. In
other words, Netflix hired a bunch of people to watch, rate and tag thousands of
TV shows and movies, to gather metadata about every piece of content: movie
endings, plots, featured locations, and jobs of the main characters, for instance.
Almost everything and everyone had to be tagged. They even created
documented guidelines, called “Netflix Quantum Theory,” to assure the integrity
of the assessment.

Unsurprisingly, the amount of data gathered was massive, forcing engineers to

step in. With the magic of algorithms, the content was divided into tens of
thousands of alternate micro-genres, or as Netflix likes to call them, the
‘altgenres’.
