Stone Age Automa

This document provides instructions for playing the board game Stone Age using an automated player or 'Bot' to allow for solo play. It describes how the Bot makes moves by drawing random cards that correspond to a grid which determines its actions each turn. The Bot is restricted from taking resources but can build structures and gain points. Scoring is detailed for end of game as well as for structures and cards the Bot obtains during play.

STONE AGE AUTOMA V.

1
By Ricardo Norton

This is a solo version for Stone Age, using an Automa, hence called Bot. I wanted to create a solo game
that resembled a 2 player game as much as possible. Although the Bot has no apparent strategy, he acts
very similar to a human player. The game is played as a 2 player game with the same rules and
restrictions. The Bot however, will not take any resources or any food. Everything else, building tiles,
civilization cards and tools, the Bot will gather. The Bot will also move on the farm track and score points.

The Bot will not pay for building tiles nor civilization cards. The Bot just takes them into his supply, along
with the tools. Tools are used for endgame scoring, whilst the building tiles are scored immediately.
Civilization cards are used for immediate scoring and also for endgame scoring.

The Bot makes use of a grid pattern with 20 cards, that tells you where on the grid the Bot goes and
where he is headed. The grid and the cards will be found at the end of this document for you to print.

Set-up

Set up the game for a two player game as usual. The Bot starts with 5 meeples as per the rules. Place his
other 5 near the board. Take an unused meeple of different color to keep track of where the Bot is on the
grid.

Shuffle the 20 cards and place them near the grid face down.

Decide who will be first player, you or Bot.

Playing

For the Bot;

Turn the first card over and see the number along with the arrow below it. This indicates where on the grid
the Bot will start his turn and which direction it will take. The grid is 10x10. The left and right numbers on
the grid represent the number of meeples the Bot has when starting his turn. The top numbers represents
the numbers you draw from the deck of cards. Imagine for example, at the start of the game, with 5
meeples, you draw 3 with arrow pointing left. Find where the two meet and thats the Bot’s first action.
Place the unused color meeple on it to keep track of the Bot.
In this case the Bot would place 2 meeples on the stone quarry. Remember, for a 2 player game, that
location is now not valid for you to place your own meeples.

Take your turn placing your own meeples.

For the Bots second turn; He has now spent 2 meeples therefore he must move down 2 places on the grid
and one to the left (The arrow). Landing on where the 3 (meeples) meets the 2. He would now place his
meeple on the second building tile (from left to right), and move the unused color to the new spot on the
grid.

For his third turn following the same logic he would land on the Hut. Placing his remaining 2 meeples there.

IF the Bot would by chance land on an invalid place (you might already have placed your meeples there),
you just follow the arrow on the grid (for the same amount of meeples, i.e. remain on the same level on the
grid) to the next square.

The grid is not limited by the sides, i.e. if you draw a card with a nº1 and a Left arrow, just follow normal
gameplay and you'll find the Bot ends on the other side of the grid. He goes from nº1 to nº10 and vice
versa.

In the example of the Bot’s turn further up. He landed on the Hut. Imagine you’ve already placed your own
meeples there, rendering that spot invalid for the Bot. He would now move on the grid to where 2 meets 10,
placing his meeples on the Hunting grounds. The Bot keeps following the arrow until finding a valid space.

As usual the Bot uses One meeple for the Farm track, One Meeple for the Tool shed, One meeple for a
Building tile, One meeple for a Civilization card and 2 meeples for the Hut. Every gathering site uses the
amount of meeples according to the grid.

Now roll, solve and take everything you have to as in normal game. Take back all your meeples. Give the Bot
his meeples back (and maybe one more meeple if Bot landed on Hut) and start a new turn.

Bots special conditions

At the end of the turn

If he lands on Tools;

Take one tool, and place it next to the Bots grid pattern. If it would be his third tool flip the nº1 tool to nº2,
and so on. As in regular game. This serves for endgame scoring

If he lands on Farm;

Move his cube up once on the farm track. This serves for endgame scoring.

If he lands on Hut;

The Bot place 2 meeples. At the end of the turn the Bot receives one extra meeple as usual.

If he lands on building tile;

The Bot takes the Building tile without paying anything for it.

If he lands on a Civilization card;

The Bot takes the civilization card. They serve for endgame scoring, and also for immediate scoring. We’ll
explain that later on.

If he lands on any of the gathering sites (except the Hunting grounds);

The Bot places his meeples and hinders you from placing yours there.

Endgame conditions

The endgame conditions are the same as normal game. No more building tiles or no more Civilization cards.

Scoring

You score as usual.

Immediate scoring

When the Bot takes a building tile he always scores an immediate 15 points. Independent of which tile it is.
If you want an easier game reduce to 10 points. For harder, augment to 20 points.

Immediate scoring Civilization cards

When the Bot takes a civilization card with resources. It receives the value of the resource in VP. For
example, he takes a civilization card with a bar of gold on it. He receives 6 immediate VP for it. 3 VP for
wood etc.

If he takes a civilization card with “roll” for resources. Roll for the resources and receive the VP as in
example above.

If he takes a “dice roll” civilization card. Roll the two dice. The Bot always chooses the most pips die. You
take the resource thats left. If he chooses a 5 or a 6, the Bot does not receive VP but takes the Tool, or
goes up on the Farm track. They are used for endgame scoring. If the choice is anything else he receives
points according to the resource as mentioned above.

If YOU take a “dice roll” civilization card. Proceed as above, but in this case YOU choose what you want
and the Bot takes what’s left.

If the Bot takes a VP civilization card. He takes the same amount of VP.

If he takes a Tool civilization card. He takes the tool, following the “Tool rule” of changing the tool number
depending on the amount of tools already in possession.

If he takes a Farm track civilization card. He moves up once on the Farm track.

If he takes a civilization card with a civilization card on it. He keeps it for endgame scoring.

If he takes a one-use tool civilization card. He scores the value of that tool in VP.

If he takes any 2 resources civilization card. He scores 4 VP for it.

If he takes a food civilization card. He scores the amount of food on it.

Endgame scoring

The Bot scores civilization cards as usual. Taking into account his Farm track, Tools, amount of Building
tiles and amount of Meeples as usual.

Hope you enjoy this.

Civilization cards are numbered from right to left.
