BOHOL MATHSHS GENMATH Q1 PLP1DAY2 v.01

1) The lesson plan evaluates functions by having students work in pairs to input values into sample functions and determine the corresponding outputs. 2) It defines key terms like domain, range, and evaluating a function. Evaluating a function means replacing the variable with a value from the domain and computing the result. 3) Several examples of evaluating different types of functions are provided, including polynomial, piecewise, and composite functions. Students are then given exercises to evaluate additional functions.

LESSON PLAN IN GENERAL MATHEMATICS

GRADE: 11 QUARTER: 1 WEEK: 1 DAY: 2

COMPETENCY & Evaluates a function. (M11GM-Ia-2)
:
OBJECTIVES
CONTENT : Evaluating Functions
LEARNING SLM Module 1
RESOURCES : GM LM pages 10-12
GM TG pages 11-14
PROCEDURE : A. Preparation
Consider this function machine.
How do you call the set of all inputs x?
How about the set of all outputs f(x)?

B. Motivation
Work with a partner.

Suppose we input into this

function machine the following
values for x, determine the F(x)=x+3
corresponding output.

1. 4 3. -x
2. -2 4. X+3

C. Presentation
What did you do to determine the corresponding output?
Tell the class that the process they just did is called evaluating a function.
Present the learning objectives.

D. Discussion/Abstraction
The set of all inputs is called the domain.
The set of all outputs is called the range.
To evaluate a function means to replace the variable with a value from the
function’s domain and then compute for the result.

To denote that we are evaluating a function 𝑓 at a value 𝑎 for some 𝑎 in the

domain of 𝑓, we write 𝑓(𝑎).
EXAMPLE 1: Evaluate 𝑓(𝑥) = 2𝑥 + 1 at 𝑥 = 1.5.
SOLUTION: Substitute 1.5 for x in the function.
𝑓(1.5) = 2(1.5) + 1
𝑓(1.5) = 3 + 1
∴ 𝑓(1.5) = 4
EXAMPLE 2: Evaluate 𝐶(𝑛) = 𝑛2 − 2𝑛 + 2 at 𝑛 = −5.
SOLUTION: Substitute -5 for n.
𝐶(−5) = (−5)2 − 2(−5) + 2
𝐶(−5) = 25 + 10 + 2
∴ 𝐶(−5) = 37
EXAMPLE 3: Given the piecewise function:
𝑓(𝑥) = {𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 4, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < 2 𝑥 −
2, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥ 2
Evaluate:
𝑎. 𝑓(0) b. 𝑓(2)
c. 𝑓(5)
SOLUTION: The piecewise function consists of two equations. First,
we look at
the conditions at the right of the function to determine the
appropriate
equation to use.

a. Since 0 is less than 2, to evaluate 𝑓(0) we substitute 𝑥 = 0 using

the first equation, 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 2 − 𝑥 + 4. Hence,
𝑓(0) = (0)2 − (0) + 4
∴ 𝑓(0) = 4

b. To evaluate 𝑓(2), substitute 𝑥 = 2 using the second equation,

𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 2. Hence,
𝑓(2) = (2) − 2
∴ 𝑓(2) = 0

c. To evaluate 𝑓(5), substitute 𝑥 = 5 using the second

equation. Hence,
𝑓(5) = (5) − 2
∴ 𝑓(5) = 3
E. Exercises
4𝑥 2 +3
1. Given 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 ; evaluate 𝑓(−3).
2. Evaluate the piecewise function below at the given values of x.
𝑥 2 − 𝑥 − 4, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < 2
𝑓(𝑥) = {
𝑥 − 2, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 ≥ 2
3
𝑎. 𝑓(−1) b. 𝑓(5) c. 𝑓 ( )
4

F. Generalization
1. What do you mean by evaluating a function?
2. From which set are you going to get the values that you are going to
replace for the variable when you evaluate a function?
3. Given 𝑓(𝑥) = 5𝑥 − 3, what does 𝑓(−2) mean?
G. Application
Given 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 − 2, find the following:
a. 𝑓(0)
b. 𝑓(3)
c. 𝑓(−1)
d. 𝑓(𝑥 + 1)
e. 𝑓(3𝑥)
H. Evaluation
4
1. Given 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 ; evaluate
𝑎. 𝑓(−1)
𝑏. 𝑓(2𝑥)
2. Evaluate the piecewise function below at the given values of x.
4𝑥 + 15 , 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 < −3
𝑓(𝑥) = { −3, 𝑖𝑓 − 3 ≤ 𝑥 ≤ 3
4𝑥 − 15, 𝑖𝑓 𝑥 > 3
3
