ICT QUESTIONS

1. What is a computer network? A group of computers connected with each other

through wires, optical fibers, or optical links so that various devices can interact with
each other through a network, by sharing resources, data and applications.

2. What is the aim of the computer network? The aim is to share resources among various
devices.

3. Write the names of the main computer network components? Hub, Switches,
Modem, Cables and Connectors, NIC, Router

4. What is NIC? It stands for National Interface Card and it is a device used for the
communication of computers among each other.

5. What are the types of NIC? Wireless NIC and Wired NIC

6. What is a hub? A central device that splits the network connection into multiple
devices.

7. What is switch used for in a computer network? To group the devices over the network
to transfer the data to another device, directly from the source to the destination.

8. What types of cables are used in computer networks? Coaxial Cable, Fiber Optic Cable,
Twisted Pair Cable.

9. What is the fastest cable used in computer network? Fiber Optic Cable

10. What is a router? Device that connects the LAN to the internet

11. What is modem used for? To connect the computer to the internet over the existing
telephone line.

12. What are the main computer network types? LAN, PAN, MAN, WAN

13. Which network type is a group of computers connected to each other in a small area
such as a building, or office? LAN
14. Which network type is a network arranged within an individual person, typically
within a range of 10 meters? PAN

15. What is Metropolitan Area Network? Network covering large geographic areas by
interconnecting a different LAN to form a large network.

16. What is the long-form of PAN? Personal Area Network

17. What is the long-form of LAN? Local Area Network

18. What is the long-form of MAN? Metropolitan Area Network

19. What is the area that a PAN covers? Around 10m

20. In which network type; the data is transferred at an extremely faster rate? LAN

21. Give two examples for the uses of MAN. Communication between banks in a city and
communication in the military

22. What is WAN? A network which expands over a large geographical area through a
telephone line, fiber optic cable or satellite links.

23. What is the long-form of WAN? Wide Area Network

24. What is ‘topology’ as a network term? The interconnection of network structures

25. Write the names of 5 network topologies. Bus, Ring, Tree, Mesh, Star

26. Explain the Bus topology in 2 sentences. Stations are connected through a single cable
known as the backbone cable. A message sent by one node is received by the rest of the
stations.

27. Draw a Bus topology.

28. Write 3 advantages of a Bus topology. Low Cost Cable, Familiar Technology, Moderate
Data Speeds
29. Write 3 disadvantages of a Bus topology. Extensive cables, Difficult Troubleshooting,
Signal Interference.
30. Explain the Ring topology in 2 sentences. It has connected ends. The data in this
topology flows in one direction.
31. Write 3 advantages of a Ring topology. Network Management, Cost, Reliable
32. Write 3 disadvantages of a Ring topology? Difficult Troubleshooting, Failure, Delay
33. Draw a Ring topology.
34. Explain the Star topology in 2 sentences. Every node is connected to the central hub,
switch or central computer. Uses coaxial cables and RJ-45 cables.
35. Draw a Ring topology.
36. Write 3 advantages of a Star topology. Familiar Tech, Cost-Effective, High data speeds
37. Write 3 disadvantages of a Star topology. Central Point of Failure, Cable
38. Explain the Tree topology in 2 sentences. Combinations of the characteristics of bus
and star topologies. The computers are connected in a hierarchical fashion.
39. Draw a Tree topology.
40. Write 3 advantages of a Tree topology. Easily expandable, Easily manageable, Error
Detection
41. Write 3 disadvantages of a Tree topology. Difficult troubleshooting, High Cost, Failure
42. Explain the Mesh topology in 2 sentences. Computers are interconnected through
various redundant connections. There are multiple paths from one computer to
another.
43. Draw a Mesh topology.
44. Write 3 advantages of a Mesh topology. Reliable, Fast Communication, Easier
Reconfiguration
45. Write 3 disadvantages of a Mesh topology. Cost, Management, Effieciency
46. Explain the Hybrid topology in 2 sentences. Combination of various topologies.
Connection between different links and nodes to transfer data.
47. Write 3 advantages of a Hybrid topology. Reliable, Flexible, Effective
48. Write 3 disadvantages of a Hybrid topology. Costly Hub, Costly Infrastructure. Complex
Design.
49. Which network topology type is the most popular in network implementation? Star
Topology
50. What is the formula to find the number of cables in a mesh network topology, if n is
the number of nodes? Number of cables=(n*(n-1))/2
